Sera's POV

We walked into a vault filled with equipment and surgical tools. I saw a few individuals inside the room wearing surgical uniforms; I guessed they must be her assistants.

I had lots of questions, but they could wait. I was sure she had the answers for me.

"Lie down, Sera," Maren said, gesturing toward the heavy titanium slab in the center of the reinforced vault. Strips of thick, reinforced leather hung from the sides. "And let my assistants strap you in. If you move even a fraction of an inch once the frequency initiates, the feedback will liquefy your nervous system."

I stared at the cold metal, my jaw tightening. "No straps. I'm not being bound to a table ever again."

Maren paused, a heavy glass syringe filled with a shimmering, iridescent fluid poised in her hand. She gave me a hard, unforgiving look. "This isn't about your pride. The severing isn't a clean cut; it's a psychic amputation. Your wolf will fight me. Your body will try to tear itself apart to stop the separation. If you don't strap down, you'll crawl off this table and rip your own throat out."

"Then let me try," I said, stepping up to the slab and sitting on the edge. I looked her dead in the eye. "If my will is so weak that I can't sit through the pain of throwing away the man who discarded me, then Caden was right about me. If I can't survive this choice on my own terms, I don't deserve to go back for my son."

Maren stared at me for a long, agonizing beat. Finally, she waved her assistants out of the room. The heavy steel vault doors sealed shut with a hydraulic hiss. "You're either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid. Let's find out which. Lie back."

I slid onto the freezing metal, staring up at the harsh halogen lights. Maren stepped closer, pressing the thick needle of the syringe directly into the pulse point of my left wrist. I winced.

"This is a localized silver-nitrate distillate mixed with wolfsbane," Maren explained coldly as she depressed the plunger. A searing, icy fire instantly flooded my veins, making my spine arch off the table. "It will paralyze your physical shift, forcing the pain entirely into your consciousness. Now, breathe. The frequency is turning on." Maren continued, paying no attention to me now.

A low, vibrating hum filled the vault. It didn't hit my ears; it hit the back of my brain. I screamed so loud at the shock that I thought my throat would explode.

Suddenly, the mate bond in my chest didn't just ache — it came alive like a heated iron rebar twisting inside my lungs. I let out a choked scream, my fingers clawing into the edges of the titanium slab, denting the metal under the sheer force of my grip.

"Hold on to your name, Sera!" Maren shouted over the rising, deafening frequency. "Don't let him pull you back!"

'Help me!'

Through the agonizing fog of the burning bond, I felt Caden. The psychic connection flared violently. In my mind's eye, his face appeared, dark and furious. 'What are you doing, Sera?' his voice echoed in my skull, heavy with Alpha command, trying to crush my resistance. 'You are my Luna. You belong to the Crescent Moon. Submit and come home.'

"Never!" I roared out loud, the spit on my lips turning bloody as I bit through my tongue. "I don't belong to you!"

"He's fighting the severing from across the border!" Maren yelled, leaning over me, her hands gripping my shoulders to keep me from violently convulsing off the table. "His Alpha wolf can feel the line tearing! He's trying to drag your soul back to lock it in his cage! Fight him, damn it!"

'You are nothing without me,' Caden's psychic voice snarled, louder now, suffocating me, wrapping around my throat like a python. 'You are a weak, motherless bitch. You will die in the dirt where I left you if you don't come back.' Underneath the cruelty, something else cracked through — raw, frantic, almost pleading. 'Don't do this. You don't understand what's coming for you out there.'

"I am Sera... Sera Ashborne!" I screamed at the ceiling, my vision going completely black as the frequency hit its peak. The pain was absolute, a visceral, brutal mutilation of my spirit. I felt the phantom sensation of teeth tearing through my chest, ripping the invisible cord away from my heart. "I am not your vessel! I am not your puppet! I reject you, Caden! I reject your pack, I reject your name, and I reject your bond!"

The pain surged again. I could feel my body trying to claw my eyes into my brain.

'Don't give up, Sera.'

'Don't forget what he's done to you.'

'DON'T GIVE UP.'

With one final, desperate surge of absolute fury, I slammed my mental walls shut, visualizing a massive, jagged blade coming down on the golden tether linking us together.

'No!' Caden's voice screamed in my mind, a pathetic, distant echo of pure panic.

Then came the snap.

It wasn't a sound. It was an explosion inside my soul. The suffocating weight of his cedarwood and pine scent violently evaporated from my mind. The heavy, crushing pressure of his Alpha aura vanished, leaving behind a sudden, terrifying vacuum.

But the vacuum didn't stay empty.

Before I could even draw a breath, a massive, roaring tidal wave of raw power flooded right into the space where the mate bond used to live. It wasn't Caden's power. It felt so familiar. Every single emotion I had buried to be his perfect, quiet wife — every ounce of savage instinct, every fierce ambition, every piece of the wild, unyielding wolf that his father had chemically suppressed since my childhood — came rushing back into my consciousness like a waking monster.

My eyes snapped open. I wasn't weeping. I wasn't broken. I felt free. I felt cold relief.

I let out a breath, the air whistling past my teeth like a snarl. I sat up on the table smoothly, the paralysis from the wolfsbane completely burning out of my system in a matter of seconds. I looked at Maren, my breath coming in short, punchy gasps.

Maren had stepped back, her face completely pale, her green eyes wide with an emotion I hadn't seen on her yet: absolute shock.

"Sera..." Maren whispered, her voice trembling as she stared down at my left arm. "Look at your wrist."

I raised my left hand. The site where she had injected the silver distillate wasn't scarred or burned. The skin of my inner wrist was pulsing. Beneath the surface, a brilliant, silver-gold light was bleeding through my veins, twisting and forming the intricate, sharp lines of a royal crescent flanked by twin thorns. It wasn't a standard rejection scar. It was alive, radiating a faint, palpable heat that made the air around my hand shimmer.

I turned my gaze back at her, confused. What does this mean?

"What is this?" I asked, straightening my hand toward her.

Maren slowly reached out, her fingers stopping just inches away from the glowing skin, as if she were afraid touching it would burn her.

"I've never seen this before," Maren whispered, her eyes locking onto mine with a sudden, terrifying reverence. "The mark... it's not just a bloodline trait, Sera. It's awake. And it's glowing."

What is she talking about?

  • THE ALPHA'S GREATEST MISTAKE    Chapter 37-The Mark

Sera was six weeks old when the mark made itself known again. The days had settled into a narrow, exhausting rhythm. Night feedings. Short stretches of sleep. The constant low awareness of a small life that needed her. Rowan returned from patrols with quiet pride, always stopping first at the cradle, always touching the dark hair with careful fingers before he reached for Elara. He spoke of the child’s future the way other men spoke of secured borders—something already claimed and defended.Maren still came in the mornings. She checked the healing, brought the mild strengthening draughts, and left again with little conversation. The sharp words from the day Elara had asked her to alter the records had never been repeated. They lived instead in the careful distance Maren kept, in the way her hands no longer lingered when Elara reached for them.It was on a quiet afternoon, while Sera slept in the cradle and the dwelling held only the soft creak of settling wood, that Elara felt it.She

The labor began in the deep hours before dawn.Pain arrived in long, rolling waves that left Elara gripping the edge of the bed until her knuckles whitened. The small inner-ring dwelling filled with the low sounds of effort—her controlled breathing, the soft instructions of the senior midwife, the quiet movement of water and clean cloth. Rowan stayed outside the door at first, pacing the short corridor with the restless energy of a man who had never been trained for waiting. When the midwife finally allowed him in, he took the place at Elara’s shoulder and did not leave again.Maren worked on the opposite side of the bed.She moved with the same precise economy she brought to every healing task—cooling cloths, measured doses of the easing draught, steady hands when Elara’s grip found her wrist and held too tightly. Their eyes met once during a long contraction. Neither spoke. The argument from weeks earlier still lived in the space between them, unanswered and unfinished. Maren simply

The formal cords on Elara’s wrist had been tied for months, yet the weight of them felt new again. She stood at the small mirror in the inner-ring dwelling while the morning light moved across the floorboards. The leather had softened against her skin. It no longer rubbed. She touched it once, lightly, then let her hand fall to rest against the slight, still-hidden curve of her abdomen. The child was only a quiet presence for now—no more than a secret change in the way her clothes sat and the way certain scents turned her stomach—but the timeline was already closing. Soon the truth would become visible. Soon the careful counting of weeks would no longer be enough. She had chosen this. The choice sat in her chest like a stone she had decided to carry. She would remain. She would let Rowan believe the child was his. She would bury every trace of the eastern trail—the quiet clearing, the single night she had gone to Theron when the guest wing slept, the way his hands had felt against her

The southern delegation left three days after Theron’s quiet offer on the eastern trail.Elara stood among the healers at the edge of the courtyard. The morning air carried the sharp scent of damp stone and the fading smoke from the night fires. A thin mist still clung to the lower steps. The traveling cloaks of the southern group moved in a dark line toward the open gates, leather creaking, harnesses clinking softly with each step of the pack animals. Hooves struck the packed earth in uneven rhythm. Voices stayed low, already turned toward the road ahead.Theron’s figure remained visible longer than the others—tall, unhurried, the plain beta cord at his wrist catching a brief edge of light as he adjusted the strap of his pack. He did not look back. The mist swallowed the lower half of his legs first, then the rest of him, until only the distant sound of the departing column remained.Elara’s hands hung still at her sides. The formal cord on her wrist pressed against her pulse like a

The second day of secondary talks kept most of the delegation inside the council hall until late afternoon.Elara spent the morning with the healers, sorting dried roots under the covered walkway. Maren worked beside her in the same quiet rhythm they had fallen into weeks ago. Every so often Elara’s shoulder brushed hers, or her fingers rested briefly on Maren’s wrist when she passed a bundle. The contact remained easy, familiar. Maren accepted it without comment and without drawing closer.Near the fourth hour a runner from the guest wing requested another mild draught for the same lingering cough. Maren prepared it. Elara offered to carry it across. She told herself it was only to spare Maren the walk. The eastern guest wing sat lower on the slope, its windows open to the thinning cloud. Theron answered the door himself. He wore the same simple dark tunic as the day before, sleeves pushed back to the forearms. When he saw her the stillness in his face shifted—something quieter and m

  • THE ALPHA'S GREATEST MISTAKE    Chapter 32-The Council Visit

The delegation from the neighboring region arrived on a morning thick with low cloud.Crescent Moon’s central courtyard had been cleared before dawn. Long tables stood under the covered walkway. Fresh pine boughs lined the edges. The Alpha and his ranking Enforcers waited in formal dark leathers. Rowan stood among them, posture straight, the formal cord on Elara’s wrist still new enough that the leather had not yet softened to her skin.Elara remained near the healers’ side of the courtyard with Maren, as was expected for a newly claimed mate who had not yet taken a formal pack role. The air carried the damp scent of the clouds and the sharper green of the cut pine. Elara’s fingers rested lightly against Maren’s sleeve, an unconscious anchor she reached for whenever the open space felt too wide.“Stay close,” she murmured, voice low. “I still don’t know half the faces here.”Maren gave a small nod. Her expression remained even, the same clean stillness she had carried since the night o
