I placed the tray beside him.

“Are you done with him?” I asked.

“Yes, miss,” the pack doctor said as he removed the blood pressure cuff from his arm and packed up his belongings before leaving the room, leaving only me and Grandfather.

Turning to Grandfather, I asked, "How are you feeling today, Grandfather?"

He chuckled softly, the sound more fragile than it used to be. "Oh, you know me. Strong enough to last a few more years, I hope. This old body isn't ready to give up just yet."

"You need to stay strong, of course," I said, settling onto the edge of his bed like I had countless times throughout my childhood. "Grandfather still has so many things to do in this world. Because so many people, including me, still need you."

He pulled my cheeks jokingly. "Of course, my dear. I know. But sometimes I wonder..." He trailed off. "I'm just afraid that I might not really be able to witness your marriage, Angela. That's one thing that truly makes me sad. I've always dreamed of walking you dow

"To be sure everything is alright with her, I'd suggest running more tests including cognitive function assessments, just to make sure there's no lasting damage. But the fact that she's speaking coherently, recognizing faces, and showing emotional responses, I think these are all very good signs."I took a heavy breath, at least relieved that she was okay.I just hoped she'd be able to overcome everything else.I glanced at her, only to see her head darting back and forth between us like she was watching a tennis match. Her brow was furrowed, and I could practically see the wheels turning in her head as she tried to make sense of what was happening."We should probably do a full neurological workup," he continued. "And I'll want to monitor her for the next couple of days to make sure there are no complications. Her vitals look good, but with a coma this extended...""Excuse me!"Emma's voice cut through our discussion, sharp and firm. Both our heads turned toward her at the same time,

*****DARRELL'S POV******The moment her eyes opened, the moment I saw those beautiful blue eyes flutter and focus on me, I felt like I could breathe again for the first time in a year.A whole fucking year. It’s been hell. A miserable, empty, endless hell. That I was even hardly myself. Every single second, every single minute of watching her motionless in that bed, hooked up to machines for a whole three hundred and sixty-five days, was a torture for me.But now she was awake. She’s back to me, looking at me with that bright smile on her face. And seeing that smile was like watching the sun rise after the longest, darkest night of my life."Darell," she whispered, and her voice was hoarse from disuse, but it was the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard.I moved closer to the bed, my heart pounding so hard I thought it might burst right out of my chest. "Thank goodness you're back," I breathed, my voice cracking. I leaned down, pressing my forehead gently against hers, our noses brus

Even if he killed someone right in front of everyone, he will still be able to crawl his way out. And that is Alexander Song."It was you," I said, my voice shaking with rage and grief and a thousand other emotions I couldn't name. "You did this.”"I did no such thing, Em." Alex replied, but there was no real conviction in his denial. "Look here, I know you are pissed but…..”“No,” I shook my head. “Don't try to lie. I already know everything about you. So you don't need to lie to me again. You definitely did this, Alex. You did this to him.” Tears were streaming down my face now, hot and endless.“Why? I did everything you asked. Everything! I left him. I divorced him. I came back to you. I agreed to marry you. I gave up everything for you, and it still wasn't enough, was it? You still had to destroy him completely!"My voice was rising.“Emma, you need to calm down. The doctor said….”"Why?!" I demanded, and my voice broke on the word. "Why did you do this? He was no threat to you a

My eyelids felt heavy, weighted down with exhaustion that went bone-deep. It took effort to open them, and force my eyes to focus on the white ceiling above me. How long had I been here?I had no idea. Then I remembered what happened last. And what I heard.No.That definitely can't be possible?I knew Darell. For that to happen at this exact time when I needed an escape route, I think it might be one of his tricks.He…..is definitely okay.I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. And to believe that the news was just something Darell did to ruin my wedding with Alex, but there was just this part of me that just won't stop having that bad thought and I found my hand hitting my chest as it was just getting more hurt as I kept thinking of it.And as minutes went by, I kept getting more worried. Fear creeping in.No. “I need to confirm this by myself.” I said, unable to hold it in any longer. My hands moved to the IV line taped to my arm and I started pulling at it, desperate to get

My eyes wouldn't stop moving around, scanning everywhere, looking for something I called hope. My hands wouldn't stop trembling as it seemed the one I had put my last hope on had failed me. I clutched the delicate fabric of my wedding dress, the silk and lace feeling less like beauty and more like chains binding me. The room should have been cold, but I wasn’t. I was burning—so hot that sweat ran down my thighs and trickled from my forehead. Then I felt Alex’s hand press against my back, and my whole body shook. To others, his touch might have seemed tender, and even loving, but I felt the warning in it. The subtle pressure that said: Behave… or you won’t get the antidote. Fuck. I am doomed. What am I going to do right now? I have done everything I could do to….to just stall this wedding as much as possible but now….. My heart hammered against my ribs so hard I thought everyone in the hall must be able to hear it. "Emma." Alex's voice was low, meant only for me, but there was

Seeing she still needed more proof, I walked to the bed, bent down, and retrieved the small box. The one I found in Alex’s room. The one that belongs to Jace.Fiona has told me that before Jace died, he came to see her. And that he kept something in his small box. She described it for me and I ended up finding it in Alex's safe.I hadn't been able to open it. It was locked with a password that I didn't know. And that must be why Alex was also keeping it. As he can't open it either, neither can it break as it was made of a strong metal. But I was sure if Alex really knew what was inside it, he would have used every possible means to destroy it.I walked back to Jane and held out the box.She stared at it like I was offering her a venomous snake. Her eyes went wide, her breath catching audibly in her throat. Her hand rose slowly, trembling, reaching for it but stopping just short of touching it.She recognized it.Of course she recognized it. What mother wouldn't recognize something tha
