Chapter thirty-eight

Bryan inclined his head with a derisive smirk, “Of course, Father. Your wish has always been my command.” There was a hint of mockery in his tone that made Roy nervous.

He would never have pegged Bryan to be the disrespectful type, but this was somewhat inevitable after the conversation he’d listened to between Bryan and his father.

When the two walked away, the formerly warm smile on Darnell’s face was strained.

She beckoned her sons to come forward, muttering, “Boys, why don’t you take dear Roy to the refreshments table? After such a long trip, I’m sure he’s thirsty.”

“Mother, we are going to join them!”

She was long gone before the girls piped up, following her husband and son.

Roy had a feeling that Darnell would have sprinted if she didn’t happen to have what seemed like a ten-foot-long train trailing behind her.

Abel shook his head. “Here we go again.” Cain turned to Roy and slapped him lightly on the back, “Sorry man, we have to go.”

He and his twin left, too.
