MERRYΝ

I had expected Nocturne to look ancient, That was the first mistake I made.

When the carriage passed through the enormous iron gates, I stared through the window. The city beyond them didn’t look like the kingdom I’d imagined from the stories.

Glass towers rose beside dark stone buildings covered in silver runes. Vehicles moved along wide roads lit by floating lamps.

Healers in white coats hurried between buildings while armed guards stood beneath enormous black arches.

Modern, wealthy

MERRYNThe staircase ended at a narrow door.Selene held the lantern higher while I examined the lock. My Eclipse mark had stopped glowing, but the warmth beneath my skin remained.“Before you open that,” Selene said, “I want you to promise me something.”I glanced at her. “What?”“If your mark reacts again, you tell me immediately. No pretending you’re fine, and no trying to force your power to reveal what’s down here.”“I promise.”“You said that very quickly.”“Would you prefer a written contract?”“Actually, given your history with contracts, perhaps not.”I gave her a look, and she smiled. Then I turned the handle. The door opened.Inside was a small underground room with shelves along two walls, a wooden desk, and several storage chests. Unlike the rooms upstairs, everything had been arranged carefully. Dust covered the furniture, but the papers were protected inside sealed containers.Someone had prepared this place to survive.I stepped inside.“Look at the desk,” Selene said.

MERRYNI read Rhydian’s research twice. The first time, I looked for anything that might be an attempt to manipulate me. The second time, I forced myself to read the findings without assuming every decision he made was another attempt to get me back.It wasn’t easy. The reports detailed Nocturne’s failing ward, the sections that had deteriorated, and the attempts his people had made to reinforce them. Several approaches had failed, but the latest investigation had identified weaknesses in the original structure that nobody had properly examined before. There was no demand that I help.No suggestion that my Eclipse power was the only solution. No reminder that an entire kingdom was depending on him.I turned to Selene, who was organizing the records from the Dominion Central Archive.“He’s trying to find another way.”She glanced at the pages in front of me.“Rhydian?”“Yes.”“What makes you say that?”“He’s investigating the ward’s original structure instead of asking me to fix it. He

RHYDIAN“Merryn has returned to Aurelia.”I looked up from the reports on my desk.Tavish stood in the doorway, holding a message that had arrived from one of our contacts outside Nocturne.“When?” I asked.“Recently. She and Selene were seen leaving the old Dominion Central Archive.”My fingers tightened around the edge of the report.“Are they safe?”“As far as we know.”“Did anyone approach them?”“No. Our contact followed your instructions and kept his distance.”I nodded, but my attention had already shifted to the map spread across my desk. Aurelia was not far enough to make the journey impossible. I could leave within the hour and reach her before nightfall.I could see her.Explain what I had discovered about Nocturne’s failing ward. Ask whether she had found anything about her parents. Find out if she was eating properly, whether she was sleeping, whether the memories she had recovered were taking a greater toll on her than she admitted. Most of all, I could look her in the e

MERRYNBy the time Selene and I left Dominion Central Archive, I was tired of discovering new ways other people had decided my life should belong to them.Six missing children.A research program that had survived the people who created it.And an organization that had preserved evidence of suffering while destroying the identities of those who suffered.I carried the copied records in my bag, but the sentence from the file stayed in my head.Seven were identified. Only one remained accessible.I had spent so long trying to understand what made me different that I had barely considered what I wanted to do with the life I had left. When we reached our temporary lodgings, Selene dropped her bag beside the door and looked at me.“Before you say anything, you’re eating.”I frowned. “What?”“You heard me. You’ve been staring out of the carriage window for the last hour, and I know you haven’t eaten since this morning.”“I had a piece of bread.”“Congratulations. You’ve consumed enough food

MERRYNThe first thing I noticed about Dominion Central Archive was that someone had tried very hard to make it disappear. The entrance was hidden behind a collapsed administrative building, and the sign above the steel doors had been scraped until only a few letters remained.Selene examined the lock.“This place was supposed to be abandoned.”“According to the records, the research was transferred here.”“Transferred doesn’t mean it stayed here.”“Then we’ll find out where it went.”She glanced at me. “You sound very determined.”“I’ve spent my entire life being the person other people made decisions about. I’m done letting them decide which answers I’m allowed to find.”Selene didn’t argue. She took a small tool from her bag and worked on the lock.A moment later, it clicked. The doors opened with a reluctant groan.“After you,” she said.“How generous.”“I’d offer to go first, but if something jumps out at us, I want you between it and me.”I gave her a look. She smiled faintly. “

SELENEMerryn had finally stopped crying when I returned to the archive. She sat at the table with her notebook open, carefully recording everything she could remember about the night her parents left her with Cressida.I wanted to tell her she could rest.I wanted to tell her that finding out her parents had loved her was enough for one night. But I knew Merryn. If I told her to stop searching, she would only sit there wondering what else we had missed. So I pulled a chair beside her.“Have you finished writing down the memory?”“Almost.”“Good. I need you to look at something when you’re ready.”She raised her head.“What did you find?”“Not another memory. A record.”That got her attention.I opened my folder and placed three documents on the table.“The facility has a separate administrative index. Most of it concerns equipment transfers and research assignments, but I found references to your parents in the disposal records.”Merryn’s pen stopped moving.“Disposal?”“That’s what
