Jake walked back into the parlor, sliding his phone into his pocket with an apologetic smile. “Sorry about that. Work never sleeps, right?”

“Yeah,” Kai and I both agreed, watching him sit down again.

The marks on both our wrists were still glowing faintly under our sleeves.

I quickly tugged my sleeve lower, my heart hammering so loudly I was sure Jake could hear it.

Dinner resumed. Jake kept talking and Kai kept answering him calmly, but from time to time he stole glances at me.

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    39. WANT YOU TO KNOW ME

Ari He didn't speak right away. The kitchen held its breath, as though this moment were fragile. The warm light from the counter under-cabinet strips pooled over the counter, catching on the edge of his mug and the faint steam still rising from his tea. Somewhere deeper in the house, a pipe ticked. I could still taste the vanilla on my tongue, the coldness of the glass beginning to numb my fingers. Kai sat across from me with his shoulder slightly curved forward. His beautiful, silver eyes shifted from me and lowered to the table, as if the truth he was about to reveal had so much weight and he needed more time before he could let it off his chest. I was so curious. My body was literally itching to hear what he had to say. After all, I'd asked for this and I was more than ready to handle whatever he told me. “ I didn't really have a lonely childhood. Well, not in the way my people think I did,” he began at last. “ Nana was always there, you know. My Samara. She pampered m

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    38. THE HARDER PATH

Ariana Jake’s name lit up my screen again. I stared at it way longer than I should have. I guess I was expecting to feel something… like the excitement I used to feel at the beginning of our honeymoon phase, whenever he texted or called me. Not to mention the way my heart used to race when he asked me out. I was no longer the girl who obsessed over our future together or tried to manifest him proposing to me. Maybe the cheating incident had not only opened my eyes but also brought my entire delusional daydreaming to a halt. The phone buzzed persistently against my palm, annoying me. I wondered what he could possibly be calling about, but at the same time, I didn’t feel it was necessary to answer. If he wanted to say anything, it would have to wait. “Why aren’t you answering?” I looked over at Kai. The soft light from the street caught the sharp line of his jaw. A faint shadow cast beneath his eyes hinted at how tired yet curious he was, which was a bit out of character for some

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    37. A CLASH OF REALITY

Ariana There was a loud silence in the room. Nobody spoke a word although they all stared at Kai like they weren’t sure they’d heard him right before their eyes slowly turned to Derrick. Shock sat on each of their faces including mine, as they wondered if Miss Harlan would be back to make a statement which would probably stop her lover from getting fired. Yes, Derrick might be intolerable but getting him fired was a bit too far. Maybe I felt a bit sorry for him, which was weird because if it were the other way round, he’d be more than happy to see me get fired. His face looked very pale. For the first time, he had no one to hide behind or clear his mess. My heart was beating too fast. I should feel relieved. Well, a part of me did but seeing him cornered and exposed, almost on the verge of getting ruined, made me feel like I had to intervene. I couldn’t just sit there and watch Kai finish him off. “Please don’t fire him, Mr. Torrence.” Every head turned to look at

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    36. EXPOSED

“Someone in this company doesn’t want me working with Nova,” Kai continued. “Someone tried to sabotage this meeting before it even began. Someone is willing to betray their own company.” Shocked glances were exchanged around the table. A few people looked genuinely confused. Others looked nervous but very doubtful. After all, who wouldn’t want to work with Kai Torrence? That person must be insane to think of something like that. Which one of them at Nova would want their own company’s downfall… …and why? This was all very hard to believe. They were all teammates who always pledged their allegiance to the company, putting all their innovation, creativity, and hard work into it. It had always been an impossible dream to have this billionaire work with them but Miss Harlan was more than determined to make it work and thanks to Ariana, the company had finally achieved its goal. Kai remained at the table completely maintaining a controlled and calm expression as he gave his secreta

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    35. A TRAITOR AMONGST US

Ariana I stood outside the Obsidian Room, smoothing the front of my black dress for what felt like the tenth time. Everything was ready. The private conference room had already been prepared, along with the projectors and the documents. Lena had double-checked the presentation slides with me earlier, and Jeff had assured me the space would remain completely private. All that was left was for Kai and Miss Harlan to arrive. As soon as the thought of him came to mind, a sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled up. That must be him. My heart gave a nervous jump as the door opened and Kai stepped out, tall and sharp in his dark blue suit. Behind him came Elena and two of his guards. He looked so composed but the tightness around his mouth gave me the message that he wasn’t so pleased about the last-minute change. I sighed heavily. I wish I could make it up to him and tell him that this was sabotage but it would come off as an excuse to him. Before I could even greet him properly, a large

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    34. THE CULPRIT

Ari The car slowed to a stop in front of a pair of tall black iron gates. Beyond them, the private club rose like something out of a dream. I stepped out and froze in awe. The building was set back from the road, framed by tall, perfectly trimmed hedges and soft golden lighting that glowed along the stone pathway. Dark wood and glass made up most of the exterior, giving it a modern but yet timeless look. Warm light spilled from the large windows, and a long reflecting pool ran along the front, the water was so still that it mirrored the entire structure. Soft music drifted faintly from somewhere inside, mixed with the gentle sound of water. The gardens were carefully landscaped, with neat rows of flowering bushes, low lanterns tucked between the greenery, and stone paths that curved gracefully toward the entrance. Everything about this place screamed old money, luxury, and exclusivity. “How have I never heard of this place?” I asked, still staring. Jeff, Madeleine’s dad,

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    6. A COWARDLY ESCAPE

Kai My armor felt heavier than it looked. It was heavy enough to make my shoulder blades hurt even before battle. I admired myself in the mirror watching how its silver plates were laced with runic wards, the leather as thick as a wolf’s hide, a breast plate etched with the Oak Claw’s crest.

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    5. DREAMS AND DEADLINES

Ariana Months had passed since that tense Christmas dinner. Autumn was already creeping in… I’d buried myself in work and the wedding preparations. Of course, it was all a distraction from thinking about Kai. The crescent moon scar on my wrist had faded slightly into a faint sil

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    4. A TOAST TO TANGLED LIES & HALF-TRUTHS

Ariana stood at the counter, rolling out dough for the cranberry-brie puff pastry bites Lena had sworn would “ wow” Jake’s parents. Flour dusted her black sweater like fake snow and the fairy lights that strung over the window twinkled mockingly at her. Wham! Lena slammed th

  • THE ALPHA WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS    3. SHE SAID YES

“ Sir, Miss Blake has been delivered safely to her apartment.” “And?” Kai didn’t turn to look back at his driver. He stood at the door to the ceiling window with his hands clasped behind his back. He stared blankly at the city lights that shone and twinkled like shattered stars
