LILY’S POV

Silence was the only thing that followed after I accepted Ethan's proposal.

Adira collapsed into her chair like her bones could no longer hold her while Aiden looked like a man watching the last piece of his world fall off a cliff.

My mother was teary, confused, relieved, and overwhelmed all at once.

Ethan rose slowly, sliding the ring onto my finger with steady hands.

And when his skin touched mine, something…just something shifted inside me and it was power.

And for the first time in my life, I liked how it felt.

“Thank you,” Ethan said softly.

I didn’t respond.

The entire room was holding its breath, waiting for the next explosion.

Adira stood suddenly.

“Lily, you can’t possibly mean this….you can’t marry him….He’s only doing this to get back at me!”

Ethan turned to her, his face expressionless.

“You’re not the center of my universe, Adira.”

Her lips parted, trembling.

“Ethan…”

He didn’t even blink.

“Respect yourself.”

Aiden rubbed his chest like he couldn’t breathe.

  • THE ART OF RUIN   CHAPTER FIVE

LILY'S POV Forgiveness. It’s funny how that word can taste so sweet on the tongue and still burn in the heart.Everyone thinks forgiveness means peace, but sometimes, it’s just the quiet before the storm.Three weeks had slowly passed since the night everything came crashing down.Adira had moved back into my mother’s house, quiet and pale, avoiding me like I was a ghost. Aiden, on the other hand, hadn’t stopped calling, texting, showing up begging for another chance.I had a plan now.A silent, beautifully crafted plan that even Aiden couldn’t see coming. And at the heart of it… was Ethan.Ethan, Adira’s ex-fiancé..the man who knew exactly how betrayal tasted. The man who, like me, had loved and been destroyed by the same people.Together, we had built a pact: to make them feel the sting of every wound they left on us.And what better way to do that… than to do it with a smile? The family dinner was my idea.My mother had been begging for peace. “Lily, my daughter, you and your s

  • THE ART OF RUIN   CHAPTER FOUR

LILY'S POV The rain came before the tears. It fell hard and heavy against the window of my apartment, drowning out the silence that had filled the room since the day my world cracked open. I’d stopped counting the hours. My phone died three days ago or maybe four….I didn’t care enough to check. The lilies on the table… the same kind I’d chosen for the wedding had wilted into brown stems. Their scent, once soft and sweet, now smelled like something decaying. That was how I felt inside. The messages had come, of course.“Lily, please answer me…I made a mistake, please don’t hate me….It wasn’t supposed to happen.”Adira’s voice also echoed through the voicemails. The sister who once braided my hair and shared my secrets now sounded like a stranger pleading through static. And Aiden? He hadn’t called once. That silence said more than any excuse ever could.I curled tighter on the couch, pulling the blanket around me as thunder rolled. That was when the knock came.Three short, sharp

  • THE ART OF RUIN   CHAPTER THREE

LILY'S POV I used to think love was the safest place in the world.I used to think that when you found someone who saw your flaws and still chose you, you could breathe freely, knowing they’d never turn their back on you. That’s what Aiden was to me.Or at least, that’s what I believed.Three years ago, before the art exhibition meeting, I met him the very first time on a rainy Tuesday.I remember because my umbrella broke, and I ran into the nearest café dripping wet and furious. He was there sitting at the corner table, tapping on his laptop, sipping black coffee. He looked up, smiled, and offered me his extra napkin.“You look like you fought the rain and lost,” he said, his voice deep and calm.I laughed, embarrassed. “I think the rain won this round.”That was how it started. He wasn’t rich. In fact, he was struggling. He told me about his dreams… how he wanted to start a tech firm, how he just needed one good break. And I… I believed in him. I helped him draft proposals, e

  • THE ART OF RUIN   CHAPTER TWO

LILY'S POV I couldn’t feel my legs when I ran out of that room. The image was burned into my mind…my fiancé, the man I was supposed to marry in less than a month, lying in bed with my sister. My sister.Every breath I took felt like I was swallowing glass. The sound of their voices still echoed in my head, their whispers, the way his hand touched her skin the same way it used to touch mine.I didn’t even know how I got home. My body just moved, driven by pain and shock. When I opened the door, the familiar scent of home hit me…cooked stew, detergent, the faint smell of my mother’s lavender oil. It felt like stepping into a world that had no idea my own had just crumbled.“Lily?” My mother’s voice came from the kitchen. “You’re back early… what happened to your face?”I didn’t answer….I didn’t even know what expression I wore anymore…grief, rage, or disbelief.“Lily!” she called again, wiping her hands on a towel as she walked toward me. Her eyes widened. “Why are you shaking l

  • THE ART OF RUIN   CHAPTER ONE

LILY'S POV“Hello? Yes, Mrs. Calloway, I’m still here…Sorry, the line cut for a second,” I said, pressing the phone between my shoulder and ear as I rummaged through a drawer for my sketchbook. The wedding planner’s voice crackled through the line, cheerful and rushed. “No problem, dear. I just wanted to confirm your floral arrangement…you mentioned wanting lilies, right?”“Yes….white lilies and maybe a touch of blush roses around the altar…. Liam loves lilies,” I said, smiling unconsciously as I balanced my coffee cup in one hand and a pen in the other.“Oh, how sweet,” she cooed. “And your dress fitting is still this weekend?”“Yes, Saturday morning…my sister will come with me.”“Adira, right?”“The one and only.” I chuckled softly. “She’s more excited than I am…If I let her, she’d probably wear the dress herself.”Mrs. Calloway laughed. “That’s what sisters are for.”I smiled, hanging up after we finalized the details. My apartment smelled faintly of vanilla candles and coffee
