CHAPTER 5: UNDER HIS PROTECTION

“Too late.”

The voice came from directly behind me.

Every muscle in my body locked.

I could feel someone standing close enough that the air against my neck had changed, cold and heavy. I turned sharply, but there was no one there.

Only the empty corridor.

The lights above me flickered once.

Then twice.

A strange pressure filled my chest, making it difficult to breathe.

Behind me, the guards were still on their knees.

One of them lifted his trembling face towards me. “She made us kneel.”

My stomach twisted.

“I didn't—”

“Elara.”

Cassian’s voice cut through mine.

He stepped between me and the guards, his body tense, his injured shoulder held slightly lower than the other.

“Everyone out.”

The guards exchanged frightened looks.

“Now,” Cassian ordered.

They scrambled to their feet and disappeared down the corridor.

I stared after them.

“What just happened?”

Cassian didn't answer.

Instead, he caught my wrist and pulled me towards the opposite end of the hall.

“Wait. Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere they can't reach you.”

“The Council?”

“Anyone.”

His answer made my heart beat faster.

We passed several closed doors before a distant horn suddenly sounded.

Once.

Twice.

The sound echoed through the stone corridors.

Cassian stopped beside a plain section of wall.

He pressed his palm against it.

A click sounded.

A narrow door opened.

I stared into the darkness beyond it.

“A secret passage?”

“Move.”

I hesitated.

Cassian looked back at me, his eyes fixed on mine.

“For once, Elara, trust me.”

I stepped inside.

The door closed behind us.

Darkness swallowed the corridor, broken only by small lamps set into the stone walls. The air smelled of damp earth and old metal. Our footsteps echoed as we descended a narrow staircase.

I kept close behind him.

“Does anyone know about this place?”

“No.”

“Then where does it lead?”

“My private residence.”

I stopped.

Cassian turned.

“You have a private residence beneath the pack house?”

“I have several things the Council doesn't know about.”

There was something in his voice that made me wonder how many other secrets he had.

We continued walking until we reached an iron door marked with a silver band.

Cassian pushed it open.

Warm air rushed towards us.

Beyond it was a quiet entrance hall with dark wooden walls, polished floors and several doors leading deeper into the residence.

He closed the door behind us and locked it.

I looked around.

“No one can enter?”

“No one enters this wing without my permission.”

His gaze moved towards the staircase.

“She stays here.”

The words were directed at the guards stationed near the entrance.

I frowned. “I am standing right here.”

“I know.”

“And I'm not an Alpha you can order around.”

His eyes returned to mine.

“Not yet.”

I didn't know what to make of that answer.

Before I could question him, he started up the curved staircase.

I followed.

The walls were lined with old portraits. Men and women from generations of his family stared down at us with serious expressions.

I wondered how much of Cassian was hidden in those paintings.

At the top of the stairs, he opened a door.

“This is your room.”

I stepped inside.

It was larger than my room at Blackwood, with a tall bed, heavy curtains and a small fireplace burning quietly in the corner.

Cassian remained at the doorway.

“You don't leave this wing without telling me.”

I turned towards him. “You're locking me up.”

“I'm keeping you alive.”

“You don't get to decide everything for me.”

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I noticed the dark stain spreading beneath his shirt.

“Your shoulder.”

“It's fine.”

“It is bleeding.”

He glanced down as though he had forgotten about the wound.

“Sit.”

His eyebrow lifted.

“I'm serious.”

Something almost like amusement touched his eyes before disappearing.

He sat on the edge of the bed.

I found the medical supplies nearby and carefully pulled his shirt away from the wound.

The cut was deeper than I expected.

My fingers trembled as I cleaned the blood.

Cassian watched me without speaking.

When my fingers brushed his skin, my mark suddenly burned.

I gasped.

He stiffened.

For one brief second, something passed between us that neither of us understood.

Then the pain faded.

I wrapped the bandage tightly around his shoulder.

“There.”

Cassian stood.

“Get some rest.”

He walked towards the door.

I watched him leave, but his warning remained in my mind.

I wasn't free.

I was under his protection.

And I still didn't know whether that was safer than being outside.

The creature stepped into the clearing. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. It stood behind the three hunters, towering over them with a body that seemed too large and too twisted to belong to any living thing. Its shoulders were hunched, its arms unnaturally long, and patches of dark, matted fur covered its skin. Its fingers ended in curved claws that scraped against the ground. Its eyes glowed a sickly yellow. The wounded man beside me began trembling. Not because of his injury.Because of the creature.I pressed my back against the fallen tree and held my breath. The smell of blood hung heavily in the air, mixing with the damp earth and the strange, rotten scent coming from the creature. One of the hunters turned towards us.His head moved slowly, as though he could already sense where we were hiding. He lifted his weapon, but the creature raised one long arm.The hunter stopped.A deep, rough sound came from the creature's throat. It wasn't a growl. It sounded like something tr

I ran until my lungs burned. The stranger’s warning followed me through the darkness.Do not answer it.I didn’t know what I was supposed to hear, but I knew one thing.I did not want to find out.Branches clawed at my clothes as I pushed deeper into the forest. My ankle throbbed with every step, but stopping felt more dangerous than the pain.Behind me, the hunters were still somewhere in the darkness.Or maybe they weren’t.I didn’t dare look back.Another howl tore through the trees.I flinched. My foot caught on a root, and I fell hard. The obsidian stone slipped from my hand and disappeared into the leaves beside me.Pain shot through my ankle.I bit down on my lip to stop myself from crying out.For a moment, I stayed on the ground, listening.Nothing.No footsteps. No voices.Only the wind moving throug

  • THE Alpha's HOLLOW BLOOD    CHAPTER 8: THE STRANGER’S WARNING

The howl faded, but its echo remained trapped between the trees.I stood frozen with the obsidian stone in my palm. The stranger did not move.He was tall, dressed in a dark cloak that reached his boots. A hood covered most of his face, but I could see the sharp line of his jaw and the pale scar running from his left cheek to his chin. His eyes stayed fixed on the mark on my wrist.“You finally came,” he repeated.I tightened my fingers around the stone. “Who are you?”He tilted his head slightly.“That is the first question you ask?”“What else should I ask?”“Why you were called here.”The answer sent a chill through me.“I wasn't called.”The stranger glanced at the stone. “You touched it.”“I found it.”“No.” His voice dropped. “It found you.”A cold breeze moved through the trees. The branches rubbed together above us, sounding alm

The whisper stayed with me long after Cassian led me out of his study. He knows.I kept looking at him as we walked, searching for something in his face. He had returned to his usual cold expression, but his hand remained close to mine, as if he expected the mark to burn again.“What was behind that bookshelf?” I asked.“Nothing you need to see.”“That passage opened by itself.”“Then you should have stayed away from it.”I stopped walking.Cassian took two more steps before turning back.“You keep telling me what I should do,” I said. “But you never tell me why.”His eyes narrowed slightly. “Because you are alive.”“That doesn't explain anything.”“It explains enough.”“No, it doesn't.”For a moment, the corridor became too quiet. I could hear the faint crackle of the fire downstairs and the distant movement of guards beyond the walls.Cassian

I did not sleep. The room was quiet, but my mind refused to rest. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the guards falling to their knees. I heard their frightened voices calling me cursed. Then I saw Cassian. His eyes when he noticed my mark. His reaction to the rogue. The way he had protected me without explaining anything. He knew something. That thought kept repeating until I could no longer bear lying in bed.I sat up and looked at the locked door.Cassian had told me not to leave his wing without informing him. He had said it like an order, but there had been something else beneath his voice.Fear.I pushed the blanket aside. The corridor was silent when I stepped outside. Two guards stood near the staircase, watching me carefully. Neither of them tried to stop me.Perhaps they were afraid of my mark.Or perhaps Cassian had warned them not to touch me.I walked quietly through the corridor. The faint smell of smoke still clung to the walls from the library attack. Somewhere below,
