CHAPTER 9: THE TRAIL OF BLOOD

last update publish date: 2026-10-21 12:34:18

I ran until my lungs burned.

The stranger’s warning followed me through the darkness.

Do not answer it.

I didn’t know what I was supposed to hear, but I knew one thing.

I did not want to find out.

Branches clawed at my clothes as I pushed deeper into the forest. My ankle throbbed with every step, but stopping felt more dangerous than the pain.

Behind me, the hunters were still somewhere in the darkness.

Or maybe they weren’t.

I didn’t dare look back.

Another howl tore through the trees.

I flinched.

My foot caught on a root, and I fell hard.

The obsidian stone slipped from my hand and disappeared into the leaves beside me.

Pain shot through my ankle.

I bit down on my lip to stop myself from crying out.

For a moment, I stayed on the ground, listening.

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No voices.

Only the wind moving through the trees.

I slowly pushed myself up. My fingers searched through the damp leaves until they found the stone.

It was warm.

Too warm.

I stared at it.

The faint glow on its surface pulsed once before fading again.

“What are you?” I whispered.

The stone gave no answer.

A soft crunch sounded behind me.

I froze.

Someone was walking towards me.

I grabbed the nearest branch and turned.

Nothing.

My breathing became shallow.

Then I noticed the ground ahead.

Footprints marked the damp soil.

Fresh ones.

They were uneven and deep, as if whoever had made them had been struggling to walk. One print dragged slightly to the side, while another was followed by a dark smear.

I moved closer.

Blood.

A thin trail of it ran between the footprints.

My stomach tightened.

Someone was hurt.

The footprints continued deeper into the forest.

I should have turned around.

Instead, I followed.

The deeper I went, the quieter the forest became. Even the insects seemed to have disappeared.

My mark began to burn.

I pulled my sleeve over it, but the heat only grew stronger.

The footprints twisted between the trees. Sometimes they were clear; other times, the injured person had stumbled through the leaves, leaving broken branches and blood behind.

Whoever it was had been running from something.

Or trying to reach somewhere before it was too late.

The trail finally led me into a clearing.

A figure lay against the trunk of a fallen tree.

I stopped.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

Then the figure shifted.

A man.

He was breathing, but barely.

His clothes were torn, and blood covered one side of his chest. One hand pressed against the wound while the other rested weakly against the ground.

I stepped closer.

“Can you hear me?”

His eyes opened.

He looked at me.

Then his gaze dropped to my wrist.

His expression changed.

Fear flashed across his face.

“No…”

I crouched beside him.

“What happened to you?”

He tried to move away from me.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I know.”

His eyes widened.

“You don’t understand.”

He looked towards the trees.

“They’re searching.”

“Who?”

His lips parted, but for a moment, no answer came.

I glanced at the blood beneath him.

“Were you the one leaving the footprints?”

He looked down at the muddy trail.

“I was trying to get away.”

“From the hunters?”

His jaw tightened.

“Not only them.”

A sudden howl echoed in the distance.

The man’s face went pale.

“They found you.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who found me?”

He grabbed my wrist.

The mark burned beneath his fingers.

He immediately released me with a sharp gasp.

“You carry it.”

“Carry what?”

His eyes remained fixed on the symbol.

“The Hollow.”

The word made my chest tighten.

The book.

The stranger.

The mark.

Everything seemed to lead back to that word.

I leaned closer.

“What is the Hollow?”

The man swallowed painfully.

“Not a curse.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

His breathing became rough.

“The elders will call it one. The hunters will call it a weapon. But it was never meant to belong to them.”

A chill moved through me.

“Then what is it?”

He looked towards the trees again.

“Blood. Old blood. The kind that can change what should never be changed.”

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?”

He tried to sit up but cried out and pressed a hand against his wound.

I caught his shoulder.

“Don’t move.”

His eyes locked on mine.

“Blackwood isn’t safe.”

I swallowed.

“Cassian?”

The man studied my face.

“You trust him?”

I didn’t know how to answer.

He noticed my silence.

“Then listen carefully. The Drowned Shrine is not a legend.”

I frowned.

“The what?”

“The Drowned Shrine,” he repeated, his voice weakening. “If the mark leads you there, don’t follow it.”

“Why?”

His eyes filled with panic.

“Because something beneath that place is waiting for the Hollow to wake.”

A branch snapped behind us.

The man’s head turned sharply.

“They’re here.”

I looked towards the trees.

“Who?”

He grabbed my arm.

“Hide. Now.”

He pulled me behind the fallen tree.

I crouched beside him, pressing a hand over my mouth.

Footsteps entered the clearing.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone stopped near the blood trail.

A low growl followed.

The man beside me trembled.

Not from pain.

From fear.

I looked between the broken branches.

A shadow moved among the trees.

Then another.

The hunters had found us.

But they weren’t alone.

Something much larger shifted behind them.

The man leaned close to my ear.

“Whatever happens…”

His voice shook.

“Don’t let them see your mark.”

My heart pounded harder.

The shadows moved closer.

The creature stepped into the clearing.

And I realised the hunters hadn’t been searching for the wounded man.

They had been following me.

The creature stepped into the clearing. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. It stood behind the three hunters, towering over them with a body that seemed too large and too twisted to belong to any living thing. Its shoulders were hunched, its arms unnaturally long, and patches of dark, matted fur covered its skin. Its fingers ended in curved claws that scraped against the ground. Its eyes glowed a sickly yellow. The wounded man beside me began trembling. Not because of his injury.Because of the creature.I pressed my back against the fallen tree and held my breath. The smell of blood hung heavily in the air, mixing with the damp earth and the strange, rotten scent coming from the creature. One of the hunters turned towards us.His head moved slowly, as though he could already sense where we were hiding. He lifted his weapon, but the creature raised one long arm.The hunter stopped.A deep, rough sound came from the creature's throat. It wasn't a growl. It sounded like something tr

The howl faded, but its echo remained trapped between the trees.I stood frozen with the obsidian stone in my palm. The stranger did not move.He was tall, dressed in a dark cloak that reached his boots. A hood covered most of his face, but I could see the sharp line of his jaw and the pale scar running from his left cheek to his chin. His eyes stayed fixed on the mark on my wrist.“You finally came,” he repeated.I tightened my fingers around the stone. “Who are you?”He tilted his head slightly.“That is the first question you ask?”“What else should I ask?”“Why you were called here.”The answer sent a chill through me.“I wasn't called.”The stranger glanced at the stone. “You touched it.”“I found it.”“No.” His voice dropped. “It found you.”A cold breeze moved through the trees. The whisper stayed with me long after Cassian led me out of his study. He knows.I kept looking at him as we walked, searching for something in his face. He had returned to his usual cold expression, but his hand remained close to mine, as if he expected the mark to burn again.“What was behind that bookshelf?” I asked.“Nothing you need to see.”“That passage opened by itself.”“Then you should have stayed away from it.”I stopped walking.Cassian took two more steps before turning back.“You keep telling me what I should do,” I said. “But you never tell me why.”His eyes narrowed slightly. “Because you are alive.”“That doesn't explain anything.”“It explains enough.”“No, it doesn't.”For a moment, the corridor became too quiet. I could hear the faint crackle of the fire downstairs and the distant movement of guards beyond the walls.Cassian

I did not sleep. The room was quiet, but my mind refused to rest. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the guards falling to their knees. I heard their frightened voices calling me cursed. Then I saw Cassian. His eyes when he noticed my mark. His reaction to the rogue. The way he had protected me without explaining anything. He knew something. That thought kept repeating until I could no longer bear lying in bed.I sat up and looked at the locked door.Cassian had told me not to leave his wing without informing him. He had said it like an order, but there had been something else beneath his voice.Fear.I pushed the blanket aside. The corridor was silent when I stepped outside. Two guards stood near the staircase, watching me carefully. Neither of them tried to stop me.Perhaps they were afraid of my mark.Or perhaps Cassian had warned them not to touch me.I walked quietly through the corridor. The faint smell of smoke still clung to the walls from the library attack. Somewhere below,

“Too late.”The voice came from directly behind me.Every muscle in my body locked.I could feel someone standing close enough that the air against my neck had changed, cold and heavy. I turned sharply, but there was no one there.Only the empty corridor. The lights above me flickered once. Then twice.A strange pressure filled my chest, making it difficult to breathe.Behind me, the guards were still on their knees. One of them lifted his trembling face towards me. “She made us kneel.”My stomach twisted.“I didn't—”“Elara.”Cassian’s voice cut through mine.He stepped between me and the guards, his body tense, his injured shoulder held slightly lower than the other.“Everyone out.”The guards exchanged frightened looks.“Now,” Cassian ordered. They scrambled to their feet and disappeared down the corridor.
