CHAPTER ONE: THE UNHOLY MARK

last update publish date: 2026-09-17 04:10:41

The night I was supposed to finally become like everyone else, the entire Blackwood pack gathered to watch me fail.

I could feel the suffocating weight of their eyes on me before I even stepped through the grand oak doors of the ceremonial hall.

For years, I had imagined what this milestone would feel like. Every young werewolf went through the Pack Transformation Ceremony at eighteen to meet the beast living inside them. For my peers, it was a night of celebration, a glorious transition into warriors and hunters.

For me, it felt like walking toward a public execution.

I was already twenty-one, well past the normal age of manifestation. Everyone in the territory knew my secret. Or rather, everyone knew my shame,I had no wolf.

There had been no bone snapping shifts, no feral voice inside my head, and no animal instinct pulling me toward the pack. I was a defect. An omen of bad luck.

Don't look at them, I whispered to myself, digging my fingernails into my palms until the pain grounded me. Don't think about what they are thinking. Just get through tonight, Elara.

I pushed the heavy doors open. Instantly, the roaring conversations in the hall quieted to a malicious murmur.

Hundreds of pack members looked down from the stone gallery, and their brutal whispers cut through the air like knives.

Look at the pack failure.

Why do the elders waste sacred moonstone energy on a wolfless omega?

She should have been banished years ago.

I swallowed the lump of humiliation in my throat and forced my legs to move down the long aisle.

At the far end of the room stood the Alpha Elders, their faces grim, ancient, and entirely devoid of warmth. I kept my gaze locked straight ahead on the center altar, where a large obsidian moonstone pulsed with a faint silver light.

Alpha Elder Vance stepped forward, his eyes heavy with pity. Elara. Step forward and face the moonstone. Are you ready to call upon your wolf?

Yes, Elder, I lied, my voice cracking slightly.

I approached the altar and placed my trembling hands onto the cold, smooth surface of the stone.

I closed my eyes and focused inward, desperately reaching into the dark, silent void of my soul. Come on, I begged the universe, tears burning behind my eyelids.

Just give me a spark. A growl. A flicker of fur.

Anything.

I waited. One second. Five seconds. Ten seconds.

Nothing. The inner silence was deafening.

A collective, mocking sigh rippled through the crowd.

The elders exchanged disappointed glances, and the familiar wave of burning shame crashed over my chest, heavy and suffocating.

I pulled my hands back from the stone, ready to turn around and run out of the hall to hide forever.

Then, the agony hit.

It didn’t start in my bones like a normal wolf shift. It started as a white hot, agonizing sear deep beneath the skin of my right forearm.

It felt as if boiling oil was being pumped directly into my veins. A ragged, blood curdling scream tore from my throat as I collapsed to my knees, clutching my arm.

What is happening to her? Is she finally shifting? someone shouted from the gallery.

No, look at her arm That’s not a wolf shift

Through tear blurred vision, I ripped back my sleeve and looked down.

Thick, pitch-black veins were violently erupting beneath my skin, twisting and coiling like living shadows.

The agonizing heat spread, violently carving a jagged, glowing obsidian symbol into my flesh. It wasn't a wolf pack crest. It was an ancient, foreign mark that radiated an oppressive, terrifying dark energy.

Stop the ceremony, Elder Vance roared, his face draining of color as he backed away.

Guards, restrain her She is cursed

The hall erupted into pure chaos.

Pack members scrambled toward the exits in terror, shouting warnings of witchcraft.

Through the panic, a powerful figure stormed past the fleeing guards. It was Cassian, the pack’s ruthless next in line Alpha.

But the usual cold arrogance on his handsome face was entirely gone, replaced by a raw, paralyzing terror.

He stared at the glowing black mark on my arm.

He recognized it.

Everyone out Now

Cassian commanded.

His dominant Alpha aura hit the room like a physical shockwave, forcing the remaining elders and guards to instantly flee the room.

Within seconds, the grand hall fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Only the two of us remained.

What is this, Cassian?

I gasped, trembling on the floor as the mark pulsed with a cold, transition throb.

What's happening to me?

Cassian lunged forward, grabbing my wrist with a grip like iron.

He aggressively ripped my sleeve down, hiding the mark from view.

Cover it. And pray to the Moon Goddess that the elders didn't recognize the shapes of those lines.

You know what it is, I demanded, gathering my strength to rip my arm away from him. Tell me

I have spent my whole life being treated like a broken omen, and now this happens

Shut up, Elara Cassian hissed, stepping directly into my space.

The sheer panic vibrating off him terrified me more than the burning in my veins.

If the High Council finds out you bear that mark, they won't just banish you.

They will execute you, your family, and anyone who breathed the same air as you.

I froze, the breath trapped in my lungs. Why? What does it mean?

Cassian looked toward the heavy iron doors, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked ready to shatter.

When he looked back down at me, his dark eyes were dead serious.

It means your wolf didn't manifest because something else killed it before you were born.

You are marked by the Forbidden Enemy, Elara. And tonight, you just signed our pack's death warrant.

The voice came from inside the arch.“Elara…”I froze. My injured ankle throbbed beneath me, but I barely felt the pain anymore. The creature was somewhere behind me, crashing through the forest, yet the ancient arch in front of me seemed to pull at something deep inside my chest. The symbol carved into its centre glowed beneath the vines. The same symbol burned on my wrist.I should have turned around.Instead, I stepped through.Cold swept over me.The forest vanished. For one breathless moment, there was nothing but darkness. Then a woman appeared several feet ahead. She stood beneath a pale light that seemed to come from nowhere. A dark cloak covered her body, and long silver-grey hair fell over her shoulders. Her face was calm, but her eyes were fixed on my wrist.“You finally came,” she said.My heart hammered.“Who are you?”She

  • THE Alpha's HOLLOW BLOOD    CHAPTER 10: THE HUNGER IN THE DARK

The creature stepped into the clearing. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. It stood behind the three hunters, towering over them with a body that seemed too large and too twisted to belong to any living thing. Its shoulders were hunched, its arms unnaturally long, and patches of dark, matted fur covered its skin. Its fingers ended in curved claws that scraped against the ground. Its eyes glowed a sickly yellow. The wounded man beside me began trembling. Not because of his injury.Because of the creature.I pressed my back against the fallen tree and held my breath. The smell of blood hung heavily in the air, mixing with the damp earth and the strange, rotten scent coming from the creature. One of the hunters turned towards us.His head moved slowly, as though he could already sense where we were hiding. He lifted his weapon, but the creature raised one long arm.The hunter stopped.A deep, rough sound came from the creature's throat. It wasn't a growl. It sounded like something tr

I ran until my lungs burned. The stranger’s warning followed me through the darkness.Do not answer it.I didn’t know what I was supposed to hear, but I knew one thing.I did not want to find out.Branches clawed at my clothes as I pushed deeper into the forest. My ankle throbbed with every step, but stopping felt more dangerous than the pain.Behind me, the hunters were still somewhere in the darkness.Or maybe they weren’t.I didn’t dare look back.Another howl tore through the trees.I flinched. My foot caught on a root, and I fell hard. The obsidian stone slipped from my hand and disappeared into the leaves beside me.Pain shot through my ankle.I bit down on my lip to stop myself from crying out.For a moment, I stayed on the ground, listening.Nothing.No footsteps. No voices.Only the wind moving throug

The howl faded, but its echo remained trapped between the trees.I stood frozen with the obsidian stone in my palm. The stranger did not move.He was tall, dressed in a dark cloak that reached his boots. A hood covered most of his face, but I could see the sharp line of his jaw and the pale scar running from his left cheek to his chin. His eyes stayed fixed on the mark on my wrist.“You finally came,” he repeated.I tightened my fingers around the stone. “Who are you?”He tilted his head slightly.“That is the first question you ask?”“What else should I ask?”“Why you were called here.”The answer sent a chill through me.“I wasn't called.”The stranger glanced at the stone. “You touched it.”“I found it.”“No.” His voice dropped. “It found you.”A cold breeze moved through the trees. The branches rubbed together above us, sounding alm

The whisper stayed with me long after Cassian led me out of his study. He knows.I kept looking at him as we walked, searching for something in his face. He had returned to his usual cold expression, but his hand remained close to mine, as if he expected the mark to burn again.“What was behind that bookshelf?” I asked.“Nothing you need to see.”“That passage opened by itself.”“Then you should have stayed away from it.”I stopped walking.Cassian took two more steps before turning back.“You keep telling me what I should do,” I said. “But you never tell me why.”His eyes narrowed slightly. “Because you are alive.”“That doesn't explain anything.”“It explains enough.”“No, it doesn't.”For a moment, the corridor became too quiet. I could hear the faint crackle of the fire downstairs and the distant movement of guards beyond the walls.Cassian

I did not sleep. The room was quiet, but my mind refused to rest. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the guards falling to their knees. I heard their frightened voices calling me cursed. Then I saw Cassian. His eyes when he noticed my mark. His reaction to the rogue. The way he had protected me without explaining anything. He knew something. That thought kept repeating until I could no longer bear lying in bed.I sat up and looked at the locked door.Cassian had told me not to leave his wing without informing him. He had said it like an order, but there had been something else beneath his voice.Fear.I pushed the blanket aside. The corridor was silent when I stepped outside. Two guards stood near the staircase, watching me carefully. Neither of them tried to stop me.Perhaps they were afraid of my mark.Or perhaps Cassian had warned them not to touch me.I walked quietly through the corridor. The faint smell of smoke still clung to the walls from the library attack. Somewhere below,
