ACCEPTANCE

I got down from the cab smiling weakly at the scenery before me, the city was very enchanting to look at. I chose this city because it was far away from my old life and I believed I could get a job here and start afresh. I checked into my hotel, had a long shower.

I went to the balcony to watch the city, I sat there with my laptop looking for apartments around, I saw a lot of good looking apartments but it was way above my budget, I reviewed my savings and realized I couldn’t afford to stay in the hotel for long, I started applying to job openings I saw online,I sent out over 20 applications to different companies hoping to get considered for one.

I headed back into the room feeling sleepy and tired, I picked up the telephone and a booklet that was kept at my bedside.

“Hi good evening ma’am how may I help you,” the receptionist spoke softly over the phone

“Good evening please can you send up food to me I want number 8&6 on the menu with a glass of water,” I said with my head throbbing.

“It’ll get to you in 10 mins ma’am,” she replied, i sat at the table lost in thoughts, in exactly 10 minutes the food arrived, I ate to my fill and dozed off.

I woke up to the sound of my phone vibrating, i groggily picked it up rubbing my eyes.

“Good morning, am I speaking to Miss Amelia,” a lady spoke firmly over the phone, I straightened my shoulders clearing my throat.

“Yes you’re speaking to her, how may I help you,” I said furrowing my eyebrows in confusion.

“ I’m calling from landex electronics, we’ve reviewed your resume, you’re being invited to an interview at the head office by 10am today,” my face brightened at the thought of an interview, an interview means a chance to get a job.

“Yes I will be there thank you,” I spoke firmly, heading to the bathroom to clean up and look presentable, I checked the time on my bedside, I still have an hour to eat and get a cab, I washed my hair and styled it, I called room service for breakfast dressed corporately and headed out.

I looked in the rear mirror fixing my hair, I prepared very carefully determined not to let my personal circumstances affect my chances of a better future.

I walked briskly into the office I was ushered into, I met a lady she was looking down at a resume I was sure it was mine she was looking at, she looked up at me with a straight face offering me a seat.

“Good morning ma’am,” I spoke softly looking at the decor of the office, it looked clean and organized it had a nice view too.

“You have impressive college results,” she said eyeing my resume,she sounded impressed with the results.

“Thank you ma’am ,” I said smiling

“Why did you leave New York I’m sure you would’ve gotten more opportunities there,”

She asked quirking her eyebrows up, i clutched my bag tight but straightened my face.

“I wanted to change scenery and explore other places and opportunities,” I said without a hitch, I had an inkling they would ask me a question like that.

“Okay, it says here on your resume that you have no experience,” she looked up at me furrowing her eyebrows probably wondering why someone with such an excellent result decided to stay jobless.

I smiled at her

“ I worked with an NGO for a while, after working with them for a considerable amount of time I decided to change scenery and try other things,” I kept my answers vague and short, silently praying she doesn’t notice my nervousness.

“Okay, well the position you’re applying for is not a 100 percent guaranteed, they are a lot of candidates that applied for this role, we will definitely revert to you,” she puts my resume in a file and picked up another, i smiled weakly at her, thanked her and headed out of the office with a sadden heart and uncertainty about the future ,I hailed a cab to the hotel.

I sighed as I slid my body into the tub enjoying the warmth the water gave I washed up and headed to the balcony to watch the pretty city lights after staring at the lights for a while I picked up my laptop to search for more companies, I applied to 10 different organizations and headed to bed early.

I jolted from bed in shock as I scurried to pick up my ringing phone.

“He..Hello,” I put the phone on my ear still feeling sleepy, I knew the only people that would call me are companies that want to hire.

“Good evening miss Amelia I’m calling from Landex electronics, you’ve been given the role you applied for ,you’re to resume on Monday by 9am,” she spoke with an accent, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, and here I thought it was another company calling me I was overjoyed

“Re…Really,” I cleared my throat and straightened my shoulders

“ Thank you ma’am I’ll be there first thing on Monday morning, thank you very much,” I couldn’t help but giggle, I did a little dance drank coffee and started looking at apartments listing smiling at the prices knowing I could now afford them.

I sat in my office smiling at the view, I got a very good office and a company car too, I was elated that everything was turning out good for me, my first days were not easy I had to learn the company’s system,adjust to unfamiliar colleagues and work with people that see me as inexperienced.

My 3rd day on the job we had a board meeting on issues the company was facing with its marketing team ,I gave ideas that turned heads and made my superiors nod heads in agreement, I was overjoyed when they welcomed and implemented my ideas.

My thoughts were interrupted with a knock on the door.

“Come in,” I spoke softly, it was mrs Johnson she held a file in her hand.

“Good morning dear,” she smiled brightly at me handing me the file.

“Your probation is over you’re officially an employee of landex electronics, congratulations,” she smiled at me widely.

I was overwhelmed with joy, I could see my future in landex electronics and it was bright.

I got to my apartment in the evening, after organizing my groceries I settled in and headed to my balcony, one of the reasons I chose this apartment was the great view it had, I stood looking at the the city beautiful lights realizing that I have taken the first real step towards building a life without Rhys.
