Chapter thirteen

Lucas's pov

I rarely ever got anxious about anything.

Life was always in order. Mergers worth billions, cut throat takeovers, rival hostility - I'd faced them squarely with indifference and control that earned me respect across boardrooms.

But here in my arms was my passed out ballerina wife, Lucia. I had scooped her into my arms after she fell to the ground with a sickening thud.

Now, staring at her pale face which seemed a little too translucent under the glow of the lights, a pang of sorrow shot through me.

I guessed that everything she'd been passing through finally took its toll on her body.

I set her down gently to pick up my phone so I'd call Adrian.

“Hello, sir?” His voice rang out from the other end.

“Adrian, I need you upstairs immediately, Lucia's unconscious.” I said, my voice steady betraying the emotions I felt within.

“Alright sir, I'd be up there right away.” He said,no unnecessary questions asked.

I waited with Lucia back in my arms for a few minutes w

The city was calmer tonight, almost too calm I'd say. From up here, the lights stretched like they would never go out. Little splatters of gold beneath a darkened sky. It should have been the perfect, peaceful view but now it felt like peace had a price tag.Lucia had gone back to her own little space of course. I noticed it, the lengthy silences, the robotic politeness. The way she said “good morning” like a job with nothing sentimental attached to it.But that's what I wanted right? No blurry lines, control and space. But her absence in places that I used to see her in made me feel uneasy…maybe I just didn't see her in those places because we rarely ever saw each other…It made everything feel less alive somehow but her choice anyway.I was mid-thought when my phone rang from across my desk. The name on the screen made me suck in a cold breath.Matt Richards. The one person I didn't expect to hear from at this time of the night.I paused for quite a bit, deciding whether I should take

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S BEAUTIFUL MARIONETTE    The mask of longing

Lucia's pov.Sometimes between arguments and silence. Arguments are the best choice no one talks about. Because silence corrodes like poison, filling the air between meals, footsteps and even breaths. It followed me everywhere,in the living room, down the halls and even when I tried not to think of him desperately. And somehow he was always there…well not surprising as this was his house after all but the tension between us amplified the silence. The day after my little escape to the bakery,we slipped back into our normal routine. He'd leave for work and if I got lucky I'd see him when he got back but most times I just miss him entirely, typical.I couldn't even decide which was heavier, his absence or his presence? They both affected me the same either way.I left for the kitchen…I wanted to prepare breakfast for myself and Sophia today.Sophia was already in the kitchen singing softly under her breath, happy and carefree while her hair looked like a nest of birds which made me chuckl

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S BEAUTIFUL MARIONETTE    control freak

Lucas's pov There were a lot of times where I viewed silence as an extension of control. That if I thought carefully about my words before I spoke, and kept my tone measured, I could maintain civility and order within myself and in my world too. But lately, silence felt like acting poison.Lucia's words didn't fill the air as much as before. She honestly didn't have to speak. The chasm between us was almost filled with her words, angry accusations I could almost tell she wanted to hurl at me.I saw it when she came into my view today, her hair in a messy bun, cheeks flush from the weather. There was something so real about her the second I saw her, like she looked totally out of place in my world of mind games and business deals. She was like a living version of freedom. And it bothered me more than I cared to admit…that she couldn't be truly free in my world.I told myself I was only thinking so much about her now because Adrian had brought my mind back to her earlier. That it was just

Lucia's pov There was a certain weightiness to the air over the past few days, probably filled with fragile peace and unsaid words between Lucas and I … so I made up my mind to get out of the penthouse today, trendy cost in my hand as I slipped into the organized chaos of the city streets where no one even thought to spare me a look. They were all just minding their businesses which was refreshing. I didn't plan to visit a bakery today but it just looked so homely and I couldn't resist it.A tiny bell chimed as I walked inside. The scent of pastries and fresh coffee surrounded me, sweet and soothing. A few customers were already seated at the window seats, some stirring their coffees while others were chatting away about whatever in particular. For a short moment, I was jealous of them. How easy it must be to exist without the heavy weight of duty, obligation and image pressing on every breath. The middle aged woman behind the counter smiled nicely.“Good morning, love. What would y

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S BEAUTIFUL MARIONETTE    Reflections

Lucas's pov Me and Lucia rode home in silence. The hum of the engine filling the void that we both didn't bother to fill with words. She sat next to me,her poise maintained but rigid, her eyes on the city lights outside the tinted windows. The dull glow of the street lamps made her silhouette visible for a brief moment - a mixture of controlled defiance and tiredness. She hadn't spoken since we left the gala and honestly,I didn't think she would. She had done enough for one night, she held her own in front of those lions. She exuded a calm confidence that made most of those hot air investors approach her with caution. I'd almost forgotten that she was new to all of this.Almost.I removed my cufflinks (I hated wearing those things) staring at the road ahead as I swerved through the night. Against my better judgement, I took glances at Lucia, she looked calm but guarded…like she was processing everything this evening had been. Hell,I was too. When I pulled up at the entrance of the pen

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S BEAUTIFUL MARIONETTE    throne of glass

Lucia's pov The dress handpicked by Adrian glittered like spilled paint under the glow of the lights - dark, sultry and enchanting. I really didn't want to take his help but when the pretty box came to my room that afternoon with a beautifully tied golden ribbon and a note attached that read “ you'll need this for the gala”,I had to bite…I couldn't muster up the willpower to reject it.Now as I stood in front of the mirror, I barely recognized myself. It was like the simple ballerina who once was lost to the shadow of a powerful man was gone and here stood someone calmer, colder and far more lethal.I heard a whistle from the doorway. It was Sophia with a shit eating grin on her face.“You look like someone who takes pride in pissing off snotty billionaires.”I turned, trying not to smile too much.“Well, that's the plan I guess.”She stepped into my room adjusting the clasp of my necklace at the back of my neck.“You'll kill it.Lucas wouldn't have asked you to go if he didn't think yo
