ELEANOR

Getting Marcus into the car had been its own form of humiliation.

He could barely stand by the time the valet brought the car around, one arm slung over one of my security personnel’s shoulders for balance, his tie long gone and his words nothing less than utter gibberish.

I said nothing to him the entire ride home. There was nothing I could say to him in that state anyway. He was too drunk to understand even the simplest of words. His scolding would have to wait for when he was sober

JULIAN“Eleanor has wanted Marcus in that seat for a very long time,” he said. “Longer than you actually realize.”I kept my expression carefully neutral. “What makes you say that?”“I’ve been observing her for over two decades, Julian.” He shifted in his chair. “She never once treated Marcus the way she treated you. With you, it’s always assessment. Correction. Like you’re simply a project she’s managing rather than a son she’s raising. With Marcus, however, it was indulgence. Every mistake of his was either excused, carefully covered up, or reframed as someone else’s fault. She raised him that way on purpose, because she intended to use him later.”“I’ve suspected something like that for a while.”“Since when?” He asked, his eyebrows raised.“My suspicions were properly grounded when I found out she wasn’t my real mother.”“Then you’re smarter than I give you credit for.” He reached for a glass of water on the table beside him, his hand trembling slightly as he brought it to his li

JULIAN“Now?” She peered over my shoulder at the window and the city beyond it. “It’s already dark out.”“I know, but Martha wouldn’t contact me if it weren’t urgent.” “After everything that happened today? You look like you haven’t slept in days.” She sighed softly. “Did he at least tell you the reason for the summons?”“No, he didn’t say what this is about, and that’s exactly what bothers me.”She studied my face intently. “Will you be alright?”“I hope so.” I was already reaching for my coat, pondering over the unknown reasons for the summons in my head. “Then go; I’ll be here when you get back,” she said as I reached the door. “Call me if it gets bad.”“It’s my father. It’s always at least a little bit bad.” I closed the door behind me.*****The drive to my father’s estate gave me more time than I wanted to sit with my own thoughts. I had no idea why my father wanted to see me tonight, and the not knowing was slowly eating at me. My father only summoned me for demands, ultima

JULIANI dialed Hunter’s number and waited. It rang out. Four rings, then silence. Not even to voicemail, just the call ending on its own.“Nothing?” Scarlet asked, watching my face intently.“Nothing.” I set the phone back down on the counter, staring at it like it might explain the situation. “He always picks up. Even when he’s in a meeting, he usually texts back within a minute if he can’t talk. This isn’t like him.”“Maybe he’s just busy.”“Maybe,” I stated, but I didn’t believe it, and from the look on Scarlet’s face, neither did she.I waited for five minutes for a text message or a call back, and when I didn’t get one, I decided to try again. This time he picked up after the third ring.“Julian.” Hunter’s voice came through the phone. “Sorry I missed your call earlier. I’ve been hounded by meetings all through the day.”“No trouble really, I just wanted to touch base, especially since the news dropped.”There was a pause on his end, brief enough that I might have imagined it.

JULIAN“His name is Martin Vain,” I said. “He’s my longtime rival who runs a company almost the size of mine, and we have spent the last decade competing with each other.”“Okay, but that doesn’t fully explain the look on your face.”I didn’t answer her right away. I was too busy replaying the dinner conversation in my head, piece by piece, his words then. “Your mother strikes me as a woman who doesn’t particularly enjoy losing twice.” I’d written it off that time as nothing more than a cheap shot from someone who was losing and trying desperately to appear put together. It hadn’t been a cheap shot. If anything, it had been a preview.“He cornered me at the investor dinner last week,” I finally said. “Said something about how my mother didn’t like losing twice. I didn’t think of it as anything more than a harmless jab.” I exhaled sharply, irritated with myself. “I should have seen it coming. The whole exchange didn’t sit right; now I know why.”Scarlet was quiet for a second, working

SCARLETA week had passed since the initial filing, and in that time the courthouse date had arrived faster than I expected. After we filed the initial report, the judge granted us a temporary restraining order and requested that we show up for a hearing before a permanent restraining order could be granted, so we scheduled the nearest date for a private hearing.Julian stood by my bedroom door that morning, already dressed, watching me fasten the last button on my blazer with the particular stillness of someone trying so hard not to say something they’d already decided against saying.“You don’t have to come,” he said finally. “Cameron can represent everything in court on our end. You don’t need to sit in a room with them again.”For some reason, ever since Julian came back from the investor dinner last week, he had been weirdly off and overprotective of me, and even when I tried to ask him what the problem was, he would be vague on purpose.“I want to.” I turned to face him, meetin

ELEANORHe stayed quiet for a long moment after that before speaking again. “That’s supposed to convince me you're trustworthy?”“It’s supposed to convince you I have no sentimental attachment standing in the way of what I’m offering you now.” My voice sharpened slightly. I was already growing impatient. “I raised that not only because it was required of me, but I have spent the last decade watching him lay the groundwork to inherit a company that was never his to begin with. A company that should belong to my son, Marcus. You asked me why a mother would want her son ruined. The answer is simple. I am not his mother.”“Does he know?” Martin asked. “That you’re not his mother.”“No. As far as Julian is concerned, I’m the woman who gave birth to him, his biological mother. It’s far easier to manipulate someone when they hold unspoken loyalty to you.”“You’re more dangerous than people give you credit for.”“I’m aware.”“So what exactly are you proposing?”“A partnership.” I moved to t

SCARLET’S POVThe entire ride back to Manhattan was awkward but thankfully, rain started halfway through the drive, so I didn't need to say anything. I sat beside Julian with my hands folded tightly in my lap trying not to replay Eleanor’s final words over and over in my head.“Men like Julian Cro

SCARLET“Ding, ding, ding,” The ringtone was alarming but I paid no attention to it since the call wasn't coming from my phone. I was heading to the dining area to be served breakfast but the mobile's ringtone kept picking my attention. “Ding, ding,” it didn't stop and by impulse I went back up th

SCARLETI woke up the next morning feeling odd. Not bad or dejected as I had been last night. But odd in a way that I knew things were changing. With a sigh, I got out of the bed and quickly freshened up, getting ready for the day. As soon as I left the room, the first place my eyes wandered to was

SCARLETOn the 5th of July, 2014, Scarlet Lawson died holding white roses.“Where is he?”The priest’s eyes held an impatience that didn’t mirror the calm words that had left him. I turned to the church doors, a part of me hoping he’d miraculously never come through. So that this whole charade woul
