LOGINEmma POV
It was Eleanor, Adrian's mother, who had called my name.
I became nervous. My hands trembled with fear, yet I wanted to act strong so I wouldn't get defeated by these wealthy people. She moved closer from the stairs. “I hope you are good?” She said, looking at me with a curious expression.
Just then, Richard came out of the room. He stood for a moment in silence and then broke the silence, “For how long have you been here?” He said, his expression hardened.
“I just got here,” I lied, forcing a smile to make it sound convincing.
But inside, I was dying to find out what they were talking about.
I felt like digging more into the matter at the moment, like I was curious. Nothing else mattered except for the pieces of my broken heart and the apology I was waiting for.
Adrian excused himself, leaving the scene.
Silence.
I couldn't tell from his expression. He didn't even look at me; was that malice? I thought. He got to a distance and looked back.
“Emma,” he said.
My mind began to race, waiting for the next word he would say.
“I called you here to show you something. You can come. He held, I felt like he was dragging me, and I followed him blindly, my heart still beating in confusion.
He took me to the pool where a party was being arranged. People were on their feet; the smell of expensive cologne filled the air, expensive wine, shiny dresses that made me feel inferior.
Everything screamed luxury.
Even Olivia stood in an expensive dress, holding a glass of wine. I stood quietly, still waiting for an explanation.
“Why did you bring me here?” I finally broke the silence between us.
“It's my engagement party,” he said.
I was expecting the next word to be my name. “I just want to let you know never to come near my family.” His voice came out cold.
I was stunned.
“Your family?” I whispered. “After six years, I'm suddenly a stranger?”
His jaw tightened. “You should have been one from the beginning.”
Olivia stepped forward. “I'm sorry. I didn't want you to find out this way.”
“Find out what?” I turned around, only to realize the entire crowd was watching me.
Olivia glanced at Adrian, then gently touched the ring on her finger. “Adrian and I are getting married.”
“Olivia! So you've been dating Adrian behind my back.” My voice broke. The entire space was silent, with everybody's eyes on us. Even Richard and Eleanor stood on the upper stairs looking at us, saying nothing.
“I know six years is a long time. But sometimes people stay together because they're comfortable, not because they're meant to be,” she added.
That word broke me more than I could express. I stood still; at this point I knew Adrian's choice was final. The crowd, the laughter, and Olivia's words in the presence of Adrian while he stood watching me being humiliated told me the Adrian that used to love me is gone
I felt used..
I could hear chuckles from the angle of the event.
Like a drenched chicken under the rain, I stood in my normal, usual clothing. I felt odd. I breathed heavily; my stomach twisted.
Now I felt like saying a final goodbye to the Blackwoods.
“You should go home, Emma. This can't be easy for you.” Olivia added.
I turned back to the gate. Ready to leave. Walking slowly, I lowered my head to cover my shame.
I walked through the hallway. The event continued with cheers; I could still hear them as I went.
My chest ached, and my body felt exhausted. I struggled to keep myself together as I made my way home. Tears blurred my vision.
No noise. Just silence.
I was completely alone.
As I walked down the hallway, a medium-sized framed photograph on the wall caught my eye. I almost walked past it, but something about the face made me stop.
I knew that face.
I turned back and stared at the picture. It was my dad, standing beside Richard, the two of them shaking hands.
I stepped closer.
Beneath the photograph, a small plaque read: Daniel and Richard. 2015.
I stared at the photograph, unable to move.
My father stood beside Daniel Blackwood, both of them smiling like old friends. What my father said began to make sense. I got this deep feeling that there was more to it, but I wasn't sure
I stared at the photograph, unable to move.
But the date beneath the photograph made my heart pound.
2015.
I swallowed hard.
My father had always told me that everything went wrong with our company because of bad business decisions.
But if that was true, why was he standing beside Richard Blackwood in a photograph taken the same year our family's downfall began?
I reached for my phone and quietly took a picture of the photograph.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
I froze. A deep voice came from behind.
“Interesting photograph, isn't it?”
My blood ran cold.
I slowly turned around.
Richard Blackwood was standing directly behind me. And he was staring at my phone.
Emma's POV I looked around again thoroughly to make sure no one was there, but there was no one. I bent down and picked up the letter. I doubted whether opening the letter would be a good idea at first, as I was scared it might be a letter bomb.“Emmy dear,” my father called out. “What was that?” He asked as he moved closer to me.I showed him the letter, and he collected it from me. Without hesitating, he opened it.“Dad, be careful,” I warned. “What may that be?” I asked curiously He didn't give a response. He opened the letter and read closely, his eyes scanning through the letter behind his glasses.“What's that? Dad,” I asked again He sighed “Nothing, dear,” he replied. “It's just a random letter.” “Random!” I exclaim. I squinted my eyes in disbelief. “We heard the sound of a van, and I couldn't find anyone, and you call it random?” I paused. “You know what? I'm coming back to this after my interview.” I said and walked to the door. I didn't realize when I slammed the door
Emma's POV “Yeah,” I said with a smile. Like the engagement party scene earlier never happened.I stood there awkwardly. Holding the photograph against my chest. I put down the photo, ready to leave. “Yeah, thanks, bye,” I said awkwardly, adjusting my dress and walking out of the mansion. I boarded a cab; a cool breeze hit my face, brushing my hair as I sat beside the window. The thought of my family's business filled every corner of my mind. Adrian had to be involved in this somehow. The thought suddenly crossed my mind.Curiosity took over. I wanted to know everything, right then.I wondered where Alexander was and why Richard hadn't stepped in when Adrian and I were falling apart. Then my mind returned me to what Olivia had said. Her words replayed in my head, each one carrying a weight that felt almost like a threat. I didn't know I'd reached home until the driver called out to me. Then I realized the car was no longer in motion, so I had to alight. I stepped out of the car,

Emma's POV I read the message: “Come to the office; I've left home already. You came late.” Even though I was still desperate to see that the whole thing was a prank, I went on.I quickly told the driver to let him know when to turn so we could head to the Blackwoods Enterprise, and he agreed. I looked out over the city as the car moved at a steady, slow speed. The thought of what Alexander would tell me kept shifting from one opinion to the other. When I finally got to the Blackwoods' Enterprise, I alighted and walked towards Alexander's office.Adrian saw me on my way but didn't say anything. Seeing him made my heart skip a beat. But he was metres away, so I just wanted to escape his sight. My heart still raced from the previous night's event, and seeing him broke me more. The fact I was even in my casual wear made me more embarrassed.I tightened my fingers around the strap of my handbag, lowered my gaze, and walked faster, afraid that if I looked at anyone for too long, the t
Emma's POV “Emma!”I stopped at the door. My heart betrayed me, desperately hoping there was an explanation.Adrian walked toward me. “You forgot your purse,” he said and handed me the purseI felt stupid for thinking he was calling to tell me it was a joke, and so the humiliation just got worse. I looked deep in his eyes for a moment. Scanning through his pupils and iris. I could see it. Something was wrong somewhere; I could see the guilt in his eyes, but that didn't stop his attitude. He smiled coldly.Adrian leaned closer. “Ask your father what he did to my family.” he paused. “By the way, I'm in love with Olivia, your best friend. She is far better than you in shape and everything a man would ever want.”I watched as Olivia stood, not saying even a single word. Before I knew it, tears dripped down my cheek. I didn't say a word.Adrian turned his back on me and moved to Olivia, held her hand, and entered the restaurant. I stood, speechless, tears over my face like someone th
Emma's POV “Get dressed, Emmy. Hurry!”I hurriedly applied the last stroke of lipstick and stared at my reflection.Tonight could change everything. After six years with Adrian, I had a feeling he was finally going to propose.I had my dress specially made and designed by me. That day meant a lot to me, even though I wasn't sure Adrian, my boyfriend, had a proposal planned; Anyway, it would still be nice to spend time with him, even without a proposal.I used every opportunity I got to steal a glance at myself in the mirror, even though I was in a hurry to meet up with Adrian. And if Olivia caught me wasting time, she might scold me again. She helped me arrange my makeup, and so I grabbed my bag and headed out of the house to the car Adrian had sent with a driver. I got in the car with Olivia. I had always wanted her to be at my proposal, and it turns out that if I'm getting proposed to, then it would be nice of her to take pictures of me. For six years, Adrian had never made me fe
