Sweat dropped down Chiara's face as she rushed along the stairs while panting. People stared at her as she passed with looks of confusion on their faces. "I'm sorry, coming through!" She gasped and was soon standing in front of a large door. She stopped and took a deep breath while calming herself. "Take a deep breath." She inhaled deeply then exhaled. She was dressed in a black pencil skirt and a white dress shirt. Her black heels accentuated her curvy body while her long chestnut hair was pulled up in a tight bun. With a slight shake of her head, she pushed the door open. "Good morning. I'm sorry I'm late..." Something was wrong. She could feel it. Everyone turned to look at her. She stopped and looked round. They all looked like they were done with the meeting. "W..where are you all going to?" She asked in a daze, wondering why they were getting up and packing their files. Before she could get an answer, they began to file out of the room one by one with only just an acknowledging nod to her. "You are late Chiara." A deep voice barked at her. She flinched and took her head down, her hands clutching her files tight. "I'm sorry, but I'm only twelve minutes late." Alex Vitale, the owner and CEO of Vitale Imperium. He was seated at the head of the conference table. "You arrived late. The meeting is already done." He waved off her excuse with his hand. "What?" She blinked, confused. She glanced quickly at a young woman about her age snickering. "I'm really sorry but the meeting can't be over yet. I still have my business proposal that I was going to introduce to you. Its epic and will turn the company around." She pleaded, her blue-green eyes shinning earnestly while her chest drummed fast. He shook his head, his face hard. "Is your idea as good as hers?" He pointed at the screen. The screen looked normal but the texts on it were not. Her mouth fell wide open, her eyes almost bulging out of her eye sockets. She clearly wasn't imagining it. That was her project and why was someone else's name on it. Her stomach suddenly felt cold and her mouth dry as she stood frozen, "How?...who...but that...." She blinked furiously trying to see if the screen will change, but it didn't. Her files fell to the floor as she moved forward in a daze, her trembling finger still pointing at the screen. "What's wrong Chiara? Cat got your tongue? Or are you so amazed by how mind blowing my proposal is?" The smug voice of a woman rang out but she paid no attention. "But that's my proposal." She whispered with a shaky voice, her eyes darting everywhere. "Excuse me?" The voice this time was filled with indignation. Slowly, Chiara faced the owner of the voice. A young woman, tall and beautiful with a smile on her lips. She swallowed as she licked her lips. "Aleira, that's my proposal...how did you get a hold of it." "Are you trying to say that I stole your business idea?" Aleira glared at her while still gracing a smile on her thing lips. Chiara shook her head slowly, her eyes wavering. Her breaths were coming out in small pants as she squeezed her eyes. She kept muttering under her breath."This isn't happening to me." "Are you sure you are alright Chiara? You don't look yourself today." Aleira mocked, her green eyes raised at the corners. Chiara took a deep breath and faced Alex again, her fists tightly clenched as if to keep herself calm. "Dad. I'm telling you, that was my proposal. I don't know why Aleira took it and presented it as hers." He frowned at his daughter, anger and annoyance were displayed plainly on his gaunt face as he clenched his hands which were beginning to turn white. "I don't care about that Chiara. You should have arrived early if you wanted to pitch your ideas. And besides, as long as its for the family, there was no harm done." Chiara's heart slammed to the floor in pieces. She couldn't stop the tears that bubbled in her eyes and slid down her cheeks. "I...I never wanted to be late. I woke up but.... you guys had left before me so I had to use the bus. That proposal...I had worked on it for a long time...I should be the one to present it." She was full time sobbing now. "Well tough luck. Too bad, everyone thinks it's my idea." Aleira grinned at her as she stood up, showing her long legs. "Dad, can we leave now? I don't want to lose my good mood." "Sure my dear." Alex's eyes immediately went warm as he smiled softly at her and stood up. He never once glanced at Chiara as she stood there crying, it was as if she was never in the room to begin with. As soon as the doors closed shut, Chiara fell to the seat closest to her and cried silently. Her mournful gaze stayed on the screen for a long time. Her body heaved up and down as she held her face with her trembling hands as her shoulders shook. She had spent many months on that proposal with the hope of pitching it in and finally making a name for herself. "How did she get it? Who could have told her?" She mumbled to herself. She was very sure she had kept it a secret that she was preparing a proposal for the company. "I just wanted to be seen and useful...is that so much to ask." Her voice was pitiful, shaky and vulnerable with her shoulders hunched. She was his daughter but why was she treated differently. With a deep breath, she got up and cleaned her eyes and her face with a hard look in her eyes. A snort escaped her lips as she stared at her files which laid in disarray. The memory of the many nights she spent developing its content tormented her. Quickly, she picked the files and walked briskly to the paper shredder and watched with a blank gaze as they turned to tiny pieces. Without a word, she left the conference room and headed to her office, making sure to keep her face impassive. She wasn't going to let them know she had cried. "I heard she arrived late to the meeting and wasn't able to pitch in her idea." She stopped short to listen to the conversation between a group of women. "Yeah, and she made a scene crying that the proposal Aleira pitched was originally hers." "Can you believe that? She came late and still tried to take someone else's credit for her work." "I know right, she can be annoying. I don't know why the boss wants her here." "Its his daughter remember?" "But Aleira is also his daughter, she alone is okay." With her hands white from clenching it for so long, she walked away. They were wrong. Aleira wasn't her sister.Aleira made sure she looked perfect. Every curl of her hair, every brush of powder, every shimmer on her lips. She chose her boldest dress, one that glittered under the light, and slipped on heels sharp enough to echo with authority. She wanted the DeLuca family to see her as nothing less than their future daughter-in-law.She didn’t send a driver. No, Aleira wanted to make an entrance. She took her most expensive car from the garage, slid behind the wheel, and drove herself straight to the DeLuca estate. The gates opened, and as she rolled inside, her lips curved in satisfaction. This was her moment. But her confidence cracked the instant she stepped out of the car. There, already at the entrance, was Chiara.Aleira’s face drained of color. What is she doing here?Chiara smiled sweetly and stepped forward, her voice soft but steady. “Aleira didn’t want to come alone, so she asked me to join her. We’ve always been close, haven’t we, sister?” Her tone dripped with sarcasm, but her eyes
Chiara let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. The moment Lorenzo and his friends stepped out of the restaurant, her shoulders dropped. Her chest felt lighter, but her heart was still racing. Why was he staring at me like that? she thought, biting her lip. Does he remember my face from that night? Or… could he actually like me?The thought made her laugh nervously under her breath. She pressed a hand to her chest, feeling the thud of her heartbeat. “Oh my God,” she whispered to herself. “Maybe… maybe I stand a chance to win his heart.”Her reflection caught her eye as she passed the restroom. She stopped, turned, and walked in. The mirror showed a face still flushed from the rush of it all — ocean-blue eyes wide, lips slightly parted, chestnut hair messy from the evening. For a moment she just stared, then straightened her back.“No,” she whispered firmly. “If I want to stand a chance, I need to look like it.”She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, adjusting her bl
The restaurant at the top of DeLuca Suites was alive with soft music, low voices, and the faint clink of glasses. The place was known for its privacy. No press. No prying eyes. Only those who could afford it sat at its tables.Lorenzo sat in the corner booth with three of his closest associates. Marco, his head of security. Enzo, a childhood friend who had grown into one of his top lawyers. And Dominic, the only one who dared to tease him without fear of being fired. They had been talking business, but as the wine flowed, the conversation shifted.“Hard to believe,” Dominic said, swirling his glass, “that our Lorenzo actually let himself get caught with a woman again.”Enzo chuckled. “After what happened five years ago? I thought you were done with that kind of thing.”Even Marco, who rarely spoke, chuckled. “So, who’s the lucky one?”Lorenzo said nothing. He leaned back, calm on the outside, but his fingers tightened around the stem of his glass. His friends knew the rule. His perso
Chapter Six Something felt off. Chiara couldn’t shake the question that kept circling in her head. Why would parents push their own child aside for someone else? At first, they told her to be kind, to pity Aleira because she had lost her parents. They said she should treat her gently, like a guest who needed love. Chiara tried. She really did.But over time, Aleira wasn’t just a guest. She slipped into Chiara’s place. Piece by piece, she became the daughter her parents seemed to want more.Lying awake that night, Chiara stared at the ceiling, her chest tight. If she stayed still, she would drown in her thoughts. So she slipped quietly out of bed and padded down the hall. The house was quiet, her parents were asleep and the only sound was the faint tick of the old clock downstairs. She opened the door to her father’s study. The smell of paper and wood polish hung in the air. For a moment she hesitated, her hand still on the knob, then stepped inside. She didn’t know what she expected
CHAPTER FIVEThe room suddenly went quiet and still after Ariana's sudden words. Lorenzo's face turned stiff and cold as he stared at her like she had grown two heads. The idea seemed both preposterous and strange to him."Why would I do that?"Ariana smiled briefly, her eyes shining with a sly gleam as she clasped her hands together."Come on now, you slept with our innocent daughter. What would people say when they find out? Besides...isn't she beautiful enough for you to have as a wife?" Her underlying meaning was obvious. She was going to defame him if he didn't take her.Aleira's eyes darted, an idea suddenly in her head. She stepped forward."I...I also have something to tell you." She began softly."What is it?""I'm pregnant for you...so you have to take responsibility." A victorious smile graced her lips but she hid it by lowering her head.Meanwhile, Chiara stayed at the edge of the stairs listening and waiting until she finally heard the door slamming. Which was an indicati
CHAPTER FOUR"Who is he?" Chiara asked blankly while staring at the stranger."Are you kidding me?" Aleira suddenly squealed as she shot a look of disgusting at her. With sparkling eyes she ran towards the man."Hello, my name is Aleira, nice to meet you " she held out a hand for a handshake but was met with cold eyes. Smiling awkwardly, she took back her hand and stepped back.Chiara was still watching the strange man, a frown on her face. Wondering who he was and why was he sitting so comfortably as if he owned the place."Wow! Its Lorenzo Deluca! He happens is the powerful and mysterious heir to the Deluca Suites empire." Aleira whispered to herself with a fierce glint in her eyes. "Tall and devilishly handsome, especially with those eyes. He is a dream. I want him." She declared to herself. Finally, the young man in question uncrossed his legs and stood up. He was dressed impeccably in a jet black tailored suit. His sharp faces was framed by his full jet black hair that was styled
