Carlos' smirk just sends chills down my spine.
We're all dodging claws, teeth, and flying steel out here, fighting for our lives. Yet, all I can think about is Carlos. Up there, playing safe, just watching us like it's some sort of show. There wasn't even a flicker of worry in those golden eyes; he just stood there with his arms crossed. Like whatever, you know?
What is his deal?
"Carlos!" I shout to him using our pack link. I kick a rogue's butt and slice his leg. No answer.
"Carlos, get your butt down here now!"Still nothing.
My wolf is growling. I’m so ticked off. What a chicken.
Beta Jon gets knocked down, and I rush to cover him. I jump between him and the other alpha who’s coming in for the kill. I bite down hard on the alpha's arm, ripping the skin and drawing blood. The guy screams.
Giving Jon enough time to stand.
"Thanks", Jon says, panting.
"We're being watched", I say, my eyes flicking back to where Carlos was standing. The spot is empty.
"He's gone", I whisper, baffled.
Jon is confused. "Who?"
I can't answer him here. Not now.
The mutant alpha comes in, getting beaten up, but still dangerous. My dad steps up to face him like he doesn’t have a care in the world. They are going at it now, teeth, claws, and muscle, with the ground cracking under their feet. This guy just will not go down.
"We need to finish this now!" Jon shouts.
"I have got a plan!" I yell back. Just keep them busy!
I sprint into the woods, weaving through trees and pushing past discomfort, the pain in my side. I'm off to the ridge, the spot we hid the red wolfsbane. My dad warned me not to use it. It's too unpredictable and dangerous, he said.
Well, enough is enough. I dig under the rock, bruising my knuckles and roughening my fingertips, until I find a glass bottle. It's glowing red, like hot lava. One drop can stop a normal wolf. But this monster? I'll need a lot more than a bottle.
I run back, and I am just in time.
The mutant has my father pinned, claws about to slice his throat.
I am so mad, I scream, and then I inject the whole bottle of poison into the monster's back. He lets out this earsplitting scream that shakes the trees and throws me back. My head smacks a tree, and everything blurs. My vision gets all swimmy.
The mutant sways and stumbles and then falls like a building crumbling to the ground.
I look up, and everything is spinning. My father is kneeling. Liosha! he yells, crawling to me.
“I’m okay…” I say weakly. “We did it…”
Except I’m wrong.
Because out of the shadows, someone appears.
At first, I think it's another alpha..
It’s Carlos.
Something is wrong. It almost feels like dread. He’s surrounded by darkness, as if he's carrying hundreds of souls. Black blood is dripping from his hands, and his eyes are red, not gold.
Behind him are the bodies of two alphas.
"No", I gasp.
"Surprised?" he says casually, stepping into the clearing like he owns the place.
My father growls. "Carlos… what did you do?"
Carlos smiles.
"Just claiming what's mine".
Liosha’s POVThe fire is dying.Jon’s breathing is shallow but steady. My father leans against the wall, arms crossed, lost in thought. And Sebastian? He hasn’t moved from the door all night.I haven’t slept. Not really. I just sit and listen to the wind, to the silence, to my own heart pounding like a war drum in my chest. The masked thing’s voice won’t leave me alone.“Give me the bloodline’s Luna.”“You wear your mother’s blood like a shield.”“The goddess will not save you.”I clench my jaw. I want answers. I want vengeance. But right now, I’d settle for ten minutes without a migraine.“You should rest,” Sebastian says, voice low.I glance up. His back is still to me. He’s staring into the trees like he’s waiting for death to crawl out of them.“I’m fine,” I reply.“Liosha…”“I said I’m fine.”He finally turns. The firelight makes his eyes look silver, stormy, and unreadable.“You’ve got blood on your neck,” he says.
Liosha’s POVPain wakes me.Not the sharp kind. The dull, all-over kind, the kind that wraps around your ribs and hums like a warning. My eyes crack open. The ceiling above me is stone. Damp. My body’s lying on something that might be a blanket, might be moss. It could be both.Voices drift in like fog. Faint. Familiar.“She’s waking.”I blink again. My father’s face comes into view, blood on his cheek, worry in his eyes.“You back with us, munchkin?”I try to sit up, but my ribs scream. “Ouch, okay, that’s new.”“You landed hard,” he says, helping me into a half-sit. “Don’t rush it.”My throat’s dry as sand. “Jon?”“Alive,” he answers. “Barely. But alive.”I breathe out slowly. Thank the goddess. We’re in a cave. The air smells of smoke and wet stone. I hear a river outside. We must’ve made it past the ridge.Across the room, Sebastian stands like a statue, shirtless, arms folded, still as stone. His skin is streaked with dried blood. Some his, some not.His eyes aren’t on me. They’re
Liosha’s POVThe howls are close now.Carlos coughs on the ground, barely upright. But my eyes lock on the tree line. The air shifts, cold and heavy. Something’s coming.“They’re not just passing through,” Sebastian says. “They’re hunting us.”“How?” I ask.“They weren’t tracking you,” he says tightly. “They were tracking him.”He nods at Carlos.Carlos scowls. “I just killed two rogue alphas.”“Exactly,” Sebastian cuts in. “You stole their power. Power leaves a trail.”My father steps forward, sword dripping. “We move. Now.”“Wait, Jon,” I breathe.I spot him, slumped against a tree, blood soaking his side. Barely conscious.I drop beside him. “Jon! Stay with me.”His eyes flutter. “Get out… lead them…”“No,” I whisper. “Not without you.”“Liosha!” Sebastian’s voice snaps through the link. He’s shifted, massive and silver, radiating command.“You and your father get Jon out. I’ll hold the front.”“You’ll die,” I snap back.“Trust me.”He doesn’t wait. He bolts toward the treeline. My
“Mate,” I whispered. The word left my lips like a spark, but inside, it was wildfire. Something ancient in me stirred. Not thought. Not memory.Instinct.He stepped into view through the broken circle of trees, bare-chested, blood-streaked, aura rolling off him like a storm. Not his blood. His arms were stained with someone else’s. His presence hit like thunder, wild and terrifying… and familiar.Carlos groaned beside me, trying to push himself upright. “What the hell is this...?”The stranger glanced down at him without blinking. “You made a mess.”His voice was deep. Low. Steady. My heart pounded like it was trying to escape my ribs.My wolf… she was practically pacing inside me, restless, breathless. Awake.Carlos spat, blood dripping from his mouth. “Who the hell are you?”The man’s jaw clenched. His tone deepened“Someone who doesn’t take betrayal lightly.”Jon stepped beside me, voice scratchy, uncertain. “Do you know him?”“I… no,” I said. But I couldn’t stop staring. My eyes
At an instant, Carlos walked into the opening, bathed in moonlight, it was like he was late for a show or something. He was calm, composed, but there was this disturbing dark energy radiating off him. It was bad. Bad.Then I saw it. Blood. Soaking the sleeves of his shirt. But it wasn't his.My eyes darted past him, and I saw them. Two rogue alphas. Lying lifeless on the ground. Their necks? Snapped. Chests? Ripped to shreds. Their strength... gone. You didn't even need to have super smell to know Carlos had taken their power for himself."Carlos?" I said, croaked out, and walked forward by a step.He looked at me like I was some stranger he had never seen before. Then smiled and spoke."You owe me some gratitude, Liosha. I just saved your skins."My dad, who was trying to get up beside me, chest heaving, glared hard at Carlos. You weren't even fighting. You were just watching.Watching, Carlos repeated, a smirk playing on his lips. Just looking for the perfect opportunity."You plann
