VALERIE POV

Sometimes you don't realize you’re feeding a snake until it turns around and bites your hand.

Julian was that snake.

For five years, he had been my entire world. We fell in love in culinary school, sharing everything while dreaming of opening our own restaurant. Three years ago, we took a leap of faith, pooling every single cent we had to build L’Étoile. We were partners in life, in love, and in the kitchen.

Or at least, that’s what I thought.

“Val, hand me the micro-greens!” Julian’s voice cut through the loud hum of the dinner rush.

I grabbed the small container of fresh greens and set it beside his station. The kitchen was scorching hot, filled with the rich smell of seared garlic and pan-roasted duck. Order tickets kept spitting out of the printer like an endless ribbon.

“Looks perfect,” I said softly, leaning over his shoulder to adjust a ceramic plate. “Just hold back on the butter for table four. The guest mentioned a severe dairy sensitivity.”

Julian threw his spoon down onto the stainless steel counter with a loud clack. The sharp noise made a nearby prep cook jump.

“I know how to execute my own plate, Valerie,” he snapped without looking at me.

I blinked, my hand freezing mid-air. “I was just reminding you—”

“You’re always just reminding me,” he muttered, violently ripping a clean towel off his shoulder. “I’m the head chef here. People come through those doors for my menu.”

A sharp sting hit my chest, but I swallowed it down. I didn't want to start an argument in front of the line cooks.

Truthfully, we had promised each other that L’Étoile was our joint dream. But every signature dish on our board came straight from my handwritten recipe notebook. Julian was brilliant when it came to talking to investors and smiling for food critics, but I was the one who stayed up until two in the morning balancing flavors. I stayed in the background because I loved him, believing his success was my success.

“Right,” I whispered, stepping back and wiping my damp palms on my apron. “Sorry.”

He didn't acknowledge me. He just adjusted his spotless white coat, smoothed down his dark hair, picked up the plate, and walked toward the dining room with a smooth, handsome smile already plastered on his face.

An hour later, the dinner rush finally slowed down. My back ached, and my knuckles were sore from hours of prep work. I wiped down the cutting boards, pulled off my apron, and headed toward the back office to retrieve my purse and count the register.

The office door was cracked open an inch. A sliver of warm light spilled out into the dark hallway.

I was about to push the door open when I heard soft laughter inside—and a sound that made my blood run cold.

A quiet, wet kiss.

“Julian, stop... someone will see us,” a woman purred. Her voice was breathless and silk-smooth.

I froze, my boots glued to the floor, my fingers hovering an inch from the brass handle.

“Everyone’s busy cleaning up, baby. Nobody’s coming back here,” Julian replied.

It wasn't his stressed, sharp chef voice from earlier. It was soft, dark, and low—the exact tone he used to use on me.

My heart pounded so violently against my ribs I thought it would burst. I leaned in, my eye peeking through the narrow crack in the door.

Julian was leaning back against the edge of the mahogany desk. Wrapped around his waist was Delilah Sterling—the gorgeous heiress to the Sterling Hospitality Group. She had been visiting our bistro for the past few months under the guise of evaluating a potential investment.

Her expensive red silk dress was wrinkled, her manicured hands tangled in Julian’s hair as he pulled her flush against his chest, kissing her neck with a hunger he hadn't shown me in two years—all because he claimed celibacy was necessary while we focused on building our dream.

My stomach violently turned.

“Mmm... you’re so naughty,” Delilah giggled, her nails playfully scratching down his jawline. “Babe, what are we going to do about your little live-in cook? Is she going to make a fuss when she finds out we’re moving into the penthouse together?”

Julian let out a low, amused breath against her skin, his thumb caressing her bare thigh. “Valerie? Never mind her. Even if she finds out, she doesn't have the stomach for a fight. She’d rather scrub pots all day.”

“She’s so plain, Julian,” Delilah murmured, tilting her head back with a lazy smile. “How did you even endure five years with someone so boring?”

Julian cupped Delilah’s face with both hands, looking down at her with genuine, glowing adoration—a look that ripped my soul into pieces.

“Five years of holding back my potential,” Julian whispered, pressing his lips to hers again. “I was just waiting for the right door to open, Delilah. And then you stepped into my life. You’re everything I’ve ever wanted.”

“And the menu for the new downtown launch?” Delilah murmured against his lips.

“Already handled,” Julian whispered. “I took her secret recipe notebook from her bag this morning and scanned every page. Her mother's original concepts, all of it. I've already submitted the digital files under my name for your dad’s board to review. That collection is so rare, it’s more than enough to convince them to hand me the flagship restaurant.”

The moment I heard about my mother's notebook, the world tilted on its axis. My vision went blurry, and my knees buckled so badly my elbow slammed hard against the wooden doorframe.

A raw gasp tore out of my throat before I could stop it.

Inside, the kissing abruptly stopped.

Delilah stiffened. Julian’s head snapped toward the door.

“Who’s out there?” Julian barked, shoving Delilah back slightly as he straightened up.

I grabbed the handle and shoved the office door wide open.

Julian stood there, his hair ruffled, his chef coat unbuttoned at the neck. Delilah didn't even flinch; she simply slid onto the corner of the desk, crossing her long legs and adjusting her red dress with a smug, unbothered smirk.

Julian’s eyes went wide when he saw me, my hands trembling violently and hot tears streaming down my face.

“Valerie,” he stammered, his face instantly draining of color. “How long have you been standing there?”

“Five years, Julian?” My voice shattered, cracking completely down the middle. “Five years... and I was just a plain, boring cook holding you back?!”

Julian swallowed hard, caught off guard for a second, before his shoulders dropped and his eyes hardened into a cold, dismissive glare.

“Don’t make a scene, Valerie,” he said flatly, pulling his collar straight. “It was over a long time ago. You were just too oblivious to see it.”

“You didn’t just cheat on me,” I choked out, taking a step into the room, my fists clenched so tight my nails cut into my palms. “You stole my mother’s notebook! I gave you five years of my life! I built this restaurant with you!”

Delilah raised an eyebrow, casually picking up her wine glass from the desk. “Julian, darling, handle your domestic clutter. It’s getting embarrassing.”

Julian stepped between us, pointing a harsh finger toward the door. “Leave, Valerie. We’re done.”

I took a deep, shaky breath, forcing my shoulders back and pulling my posture straight, even as hot tears continued to spill down my cheeks.

“I’ll leave,” I said, closing the distance until I was stepping right up to his face. “But erase those files and give me back my mother’s physical notebook right now, or I swear to God I will burn your name to the ground!”

Julian’s lips twitched. He leaned down, his face twisting into pure, arrogant malice.

“Burn my name?” He let out a dark, mocking laugh. “Go ahead and try. Then you’ll see what it means to mess with the future son-in-law of Sterling Hospitality.”

I stood there, stunned by the sheer depth of his vanity. Shock made me shut my eyes tight as a shaky breath escaped me—halfway between a laugh and a sob. How on earth had I wasted five years of my life with someone so desperate for status?

I turned my head and looked directly at Delilah. My voice grew dead steady, filled with genuine, icy pity.

“Don’t be blind like I was,” I told her with cold confidence, pointing a trembling finger at Julian. “He's a user. A shortcut-seeking, desperate man who is hungry for success. The second he finds someone else who can offer him a bigger plate, he will dump you too.”

My words landed with so much force that Delilah sat up straighter, her smug smirk faltering as her glass froze near her lips. Beside her, Julian looked completely shocked, his jaw dropping slightly.

I faced Julian one last time, my eyes burning with pure contempt.

“As for L’Étoile, you’ll hear from my lawyer,” I said coldly. “Because that’s the only business we have left together, you gold digger.”

I turned on my heel and walked out of the office. But the second I turned the corner into the back alley, I started breaking apart inside.

The moment I hit the cold night air, my knees buckled. I fell hard against the dirty brick wall, collapsing onto the pavement.

I sobbed, beating my fist against my chest as I struggled to draw oxygen into my lungs.

“Julian!” I screamed silently into the dark night, clutching my aching heart. “How could you do this to me?!”

Right in the middle of my tears, a strange, hysterical laugh suddenly bubbled up from my throat.

My grandfather’s voice rang clearly in my head. Before dementia stole his mind, he had warned me about Julian. He told me never to trust a man who wanted to build an empire on a woman’s back.

I sat on the freezing ground, crying and laughing all at once, wishing I had listened.

“Miss Val? Are you okay?” a voice called out softly from the kitchen doorway.

I flinched and quickly scrambled to my feet, wiping my cheeks with my sleeve. It was one of our prep cooks, holding a trash bag and looking at me with genuine concern.

“I’m fine,” I lied, nodding quickly before rushing off into the night.

The next morning, I woke up to my phone blowing up on my nightstand.

Thirty missed calls. Fifty text messages.

I sat up in bed, my head throbbing, and opened my news app. The front-page headline hit me like a physical blow:

VIP GUEST CRITICAL IN ICU AFTER SEVERE FOOD POISONING AT L’ETOILE

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. The VIP table... That was the very last ticket logged under my station before I walked out of the kitchen last night.

Below the headline was a large photo of ambulances parked outside the bistro. Right under it was a video clip of Julian standing arm-in-arm with Delilah in front of a dozen flashing news cameras.

I clicked play with a shaking thumb.

“—it is a tragedy,” Julian was saying into a cluster of microphones, putting on a heartbroken face for the press. “We discovered that my former line cook, Valerie Montgomery, deliberately used spoiled ingredients during last night’s prep out of professional jealousy. We have officially terminated her contract, submitted her name for permanent license revocation, and the police are taking over.”

Julian stepped back, and Delilah smoothly stepped up to the microphones, adjusting her dark sunglasses with a solemn, practiced expression.

“To ensure public safety and prevent a disaster like this from ever happening again,” Delilah announced into the crowd of flashing cameras, “Sterling Hospitality is currently evaluating an emergency acquisition to step in, stabilize, and take full operational control of L’Étoile…”

The rest of her words faded to my ears as my vision blurred.

“No...” I gasped, dropping the phone onto my blanket. “No, no, no!”

“Julian…..No…..

He had set me up. The realization hit like a physical punch. He logged that ticket under my name and sabotaged the plate after I walked out—all so he could destroy my reputation, invalidate my ownership claim, and hand L’Étoile to Sterling Hospitality!

BANG! BANG! BANG!

A heavy, aggressive knock rattled my apartment door.

“Valerie Montgomery! Local Authorities! Open the door!”

I scrambled out of bed, my knees giving out as I hit the hardwood floor. I crawled toward the hallway, panic clawing at my throat.

In less than twelve hours, he hadn't just broken my heart.

He had completely destroyed my life.
