INICIAR SESIÓN
The cemetery was a sea of gray headstones. The storm showed no mercy. Valentina felt the icy water seeping into her very soul; her dark clothes now weighed on her like a suit of lead armor.
Before her lay Luz’s small white coffin. An insultingly pure blotch amid the mud. Her daughter, her only reason to breathe, was being lowered into the earth at just six years old. Valentina wasn’t crying. She let out an animal moan, a broken sound rising from a chest that no longer beat but bled.
Cristina held her tightly, gripping her to keep her from collapsing into the mud. It was just the two of them against the world. Valentina closed her eyes, and Luz’s final words pierced her like thorns: “Don’t be sad, Mommy. Don’t cry anymore. Daddy is bad; he doesn’t deserve your tears. Smile—your little eyes are prettier that way. Promise me you won’t be sad. Soon I’ll be a little angel, and I’ll take good care of you. You’re the best mommy in the world.”
A clap of thunder dissolved the memory. The present returned with the force of a physical blow.
The coffin began to descend. Valentina lunged toward the edge of the grave, her hands sinking into the mud, her fingers clawing at the damp earth.
“Take me instead!” The scream tore through her throat. “God damn it, take me instead! Don’t leave me here without her!”
Cristina grabbed her around the waist, desperately pulling her backward. Valentina fought and kicked, wanting to throw herself into the hole, wanting the earth to cover her too.
“Let me go! Luz needs me! She’s afraid of the dark, Cris! Let me go with her!”
“Vale, look at me! Please, stop!” Cristina sobbed, her face drenched in rain and snot as she pressed Valentina against her chest.
Valentina collapsed to her knees. The mud stained her face, her clothes, her entire life. She no longer screamed. Now there was only a muffled wail, the rhythmic rocking of someone who no longer inhabited her own body.
“It’s over, Cris,” she whispered. Her voice was a thread of ash. “My life is being buried today.”
“Don’t say that, Vale. You have to be strong. For her...” Cristina was trembling. Her arms could barely support the dead weight of her friend.
Valentina shook her head, her eyes fixed on the void.
“There is no ‘for her.’ She’s in the ground. And I... I’m just a corpse someone forgot to stop breathing.”
Valentina didn’t answer. There was nothing left.
She looked at her hands. They were empty, rough with cold. Those hands would never brush Luz’s hair again. They would never soothe another nightmare. The emptiness wasn’t an absence; it was a monster. It had claws and devoured her from the inside, leaving her a hollow shell beneath the storm.
The sky kept weeping. But there was no rain in the world that could wash away her agony. She had just given her heart to the earth. And the earth, cold and deaf, would never give it back.

The drive back to the Echeverry mansion was a tunnel of shadows. Valentina shuffled inside, leaving a trail of water across the luxurious marble entrance. All she wanted was to reach her daughter’s room, lie down on her bed, and search the sheets for the scent of her perfume.
But as she climbed the stairs, a sound stopped her dead. Laughter mingled with panting and moans of pleasure, filling the hallway. They were coming from the master bedroom, the one she shared with her husband.
Valentina pushed the door open with agonizing slowness. What she saw turned her stomach. Héctor and Sandra, her adoptive sister, were lost in passion in their own bed.
“More!” Sandra moaned; her voice broken with pleasure. “Tell me you love only me. Now that Luz is gone, we can be together without anyone coming between us.”
“I love you, only you,” he replied between gasps, without stopping. “Valentina is just another piece of furniture, but that girl was the anchor tying me to her. What a relief that problem took care of itself.”
Valentina felt her blood turn to fire. She burst into the room.
“Damn you!” Valentina screamed as her fists struck him. “While I was burying my daughter, you were screwing this whore! Was this the important business deal you had to close? Not even your daughter’s pleas moved you!”
Héctor pulled away from Sandra with an irritated growl. He seized Valentina by the wrists and, with brute force, slapped her back so hard that she staggered.
“I’m sick of pretending!” he roared, standing in front of her. “Do you think I married you for love? I did it because your grandfather Lorenzo had stipulated it so I could inherit his share. That’s the only reason I put up with you!”
“She’s your daughter, Héctor!” she sobbed, dazed by the blow. “Our little Luz!”
“I never wanted to be a father!” he spat contemptuously. “The night we were together, I was drunk and wanted to forget Sandra. I would never sleep with a repulsive fat woman like you while sober. You disgust me.”
Sandra, still in bed and barely covering herself with the sheet, let out a venomous laugh.
“Look at yourself, Valentina. You’re pathetic. Did you really think a man like him would ever love you? You were just a formality on the way to our fortune.”
“Your monsters,” Valentina whispered, her eyes bloodshot. “But your game is over. As soon as Leónidas gets back from Spain, I’ll tell him everything. I’ll bring you both down!”
The name Leónidas transformed Héctor’s face into a mask of pure hatred. He grabbed her arm violently and dragged her out of the room toward the stair landing.
“You’re not telling anyone anything,” he growled.
“Let go of me! Murderer!” she screamed, fighting for her life.
Héctor looked at her with utter contempt and shoved her over the edge of the stairs. “Go keep your daughter company!”
The shove was abrupt and final. Valentina felt the emptiness beneath her feet. She tumbled down the stairs, feeling every edge strike her ribs, legs, and head. The world became a whirlwind of pain until the final impact against the ground floor robbed her of consciousness.
The bedroom door slammed shut.Vicente paced back and forth aimlessly. He ran his hands through his hair, breathing hard. Memories didn't ask permission; they struck him straight in the chest."Calm down," Maximiliano said, closing the door carefully. "You can't lose your head like this."Vicente let out a bitter laugh."Calm down? Do you know what it means to see her again? Do you know what she did to me?"Maximiliano remained silent. He knew, but not enough."That woman," Vicente continued, "accused me of abuse just because I broke up with her. She became obsessed. She couldn't stand that I hadn't chosen her. And she destroyed me."He punched the wall."I spent half my life in prison, Maxi. Half my life. I lost my youth. I lost my name. I lost my mother."His voice broke."She died believing her son was a monster. She died without knowing I'd been declared innocent. And when the truth was finally proven... do you know what Clarisa did?"Maximiliano lowered his gaze."She mocked me.
Valentina looked at herself in the mirror one last time. The emerald-green silk dress fell over her body with an elegance that commanded authority. It wasn't just a garment; it was armor. The cut accentuated her curves with a sophistication that left no doubt about her confidence. She put on diamond earrings, finished lining her lips in a deep red, and exhaled. There was no trace left of the woman who used to bow her head. She stared at herself."Today, I won't tremble," she whispered.Downstairs, Alejandro and Maximiliano were welcoming the Echeverrys."Welcome," Alejandro said with measured courtesy.Leonidas, Hector, and Georgina entered. Sandra followed behind them, wearing a smile full of poison. Clarisa and Federico walked together, taking everything in.Hector looked around."Where's your wife?"Alejandro smiled faintly."She's coming down."At that moment, the firm sound of heels marked each step.Sandra leaned toward Georgina."I can't wait to meet the wife of the most sought
Morning came with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sound of Julián's laughter filling the dining room.Valentina was pouring juice when she noticed the boy kept looking at his father and then at her, a mischievous smile on his face."What's going on, champ?" Maximiliano asked, amused.Julián rested his elbows on the table."Dad... are you in love with Mom Vale yet?"Valentina's fork clinked against her plate. She felt heat rush to her face."Julián..." she murmured, embarrassed.Vicente burst out laughing. Maximiliano did too.Alejandro, however, didn't hesitate for a second."Of course I'm in love with your mom," he answered calmly. "How could I not be? She's a special woman. Strong. Brave. And she has the biggest heart I've ever known."Julián's eyes widened. He bounced in his chair."Then kiss her! Kiss her now!"Valentina quickly shook her head."Juli, no... we're having breakfast..."But Alejandro was already on his feet. He walked calmly around the table and came to he
Valentina couldn't take it any longer. Vicente's gaze weighed on her, constant and silent. She rose from the armchair and walked straight toward Vicente. He didn't move. He was waiting for her, as if he knew this moment would come."Why haven't you stopped watching me since you arrived?" she asked bluntly. "You're always there. Watching me."Vicente lowered his arms."I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable.""Well, you are."He took a deep breath."I'm sorry, Valentina. I didn't mean to make you feel that way. It's just that you..."He fell silent, as though the words had become trapped inside him."What about me?" she pressed.Vicente shook his head."Nothing. Forget it."Valentina took a step back."Stop harassing me. And take this as a gentle warning. Because if I have to tell Alejandro, he won't be as kind as I'm being."Vicente's eyes hardened for a moment, but he didn't reply. She turned and walked away. When she closed her bedroom door, she leaned against it and pressed a hand
The Echeverry Group's boardroom was full.Leonidas sat at the head of the table. Hector was on his right, Federico on his left. The other shareholders murmured among themselves, unsettled by the figures they'd received that morning. The door opened unhurriedly.Alejandro entered with his lawyers and two financial advisers. Dark suit. Firm stride. He didn't ask permission to walk to the center of the table."Thank you for receiving me," he said, taking a seat as though he already belonged there.Leonidas regarded him with undisguised contempt."Don't mistake this for a welcome, Casalins. It's a formality.""Formalities keep business running," Alejandro replied. "And I'm here on business."One of the lawyers slid several folders across the table. The shareholders began reviewing them.Leonidas frowned."Are you proposing to buy our shares?""Not all of them," Alejandro clarified. "Only enough to rescue the company."Leonidas let out a dry laugh."Rescue. What a convenient word coming fr
Night fell elegantly over the Casalins mansion. Alejandro had left nothing to chance. Soft music and an immaculate table made for the perfect welcome for Maximiliano Casalins."I want my grandfather to feel that this is his home," Alejandro instructed the staff.Maximiliano entered leaning on his cane, but his bearing remained unchanged. His eyes lit up when he saw Julián running toward him."Grandpa!" the boy shouted."Come here, champ," he replied, bending down with some effort.Valentina watched the scene tenderly. Julián ran again, this time toward her."Will you help me with my tie?" the little boy asked, lifting his chin. She smiled and bent down to his level."Of course. But you have to stand still.""If you ask me to, I will," Julián said proudly.Maximiliano watched them with genuine emotion."Alejandro," he murmured, "there's something special about that woman.""Looks that way," he replied without taking his eyes off Valentina. At the other end of the room, Vicente stood in
