The city faded behind them, replaced by winding roads and endless trees.

Dante drove with one hand on the wheel, the other resting on Cassandra's thigh. His thumb traced circles on her bare skin, sending shivers up her spine. The windows were down, the wind whipping through her hair. She felt free—lighter than she had in weeks.

"Favorite color?" she asked, her fingers tracing patterns on his thigh, inching higher with each pass.

"Black," he said, his voice strained. "Yours?"

"Blue. Like the sky." She looked up at the passing clouds. "Favorite food?"

"Steak. Rare. You?"

"Pasta. Anything with pasta." She laughed. "My grandmother makes the best lasagna."

His hand covered hers, squeezing gently. "I'll have to try it sometime."

"Favorite season?" she asked.

"Winter. It's quiet. Everything stops."

"Summer," she said. "I love the warmth. The long days."

"Favorite thing to do on a Sunday?"

She thought for a moment. "Sleep in. Read. Cook something slow."

He smiled. "I don't have Sundays. There's always work."

"Then I'll teach you how to have Sundays."

Their conversation flowed easily, their words weaving together. She told him she hated mornings. He told her he hated liars. She told him she loved the rain. He told her he loved the quiet.

Her fingers traced the outline of him through his trousers. He groaned, his grip tightening on the steering wheel.

"Keep that up, and we won't make it to our destination," he warned.

She smiled against his skin, her lips brushing his neck. "Maybe I don't want to."

He laughed, pulling her closer. "You'll be the death of me."

"No. I'll be the one who saves you."

His eyes met hers. He said nothing. But she saw everything in his gaze.

---

Dante pulled the car to the side of the road.

"Why are we stopping?" Cassandra asked, her voice curious.

He didn't answer. He just reached over, his hand cupping her face. His lips found hers, hungry and demanding. She responded immediately, her fingers tangling in his hair.

"Couldn't wait," he murmured against her mouth. "I couldn't wait."

She kissed him back, her body leaning into his. The car was too small. They were too desperate. They laughed against each other's lips, fumbling and breathless.

When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless, hearts pounding. The windows were fogged.

"We should get to the lake house," she whispered, forehead resting against his.

He laughed, kissing her forehead. "We should."

Neither moved for a long time.

---

The lake house was beautiful.

Wooden, warm, surrounded by towering trees. The water glittered in the afternoon sun, calm and inviting. Dante carried her inside, his lips never leaving hers.

"Bedroom," she gasped.

"Where?"

She pointed. They stumbled toward it, still kissing, still touching.

They fell onto the bed together.

---

He pulled back, looking at her. His eyes were dark with desire, his chest heaving. She was beautiful, spread beneath him, her hair wild, her cheeks flushed.

"You're so beautiful," he whispered.

"So are you."

He kissed her forehead, her nose, her cheeks. She laughed, pulling him closer.

"I love you," she said.

"I love you too."

His arms came around her, holding her close. She buried her face in his neck, her body trembling. He held her, his lips whispering reassurances against her ear.

"I've got you," he murmured. "I've got you, baby."

Tears slipped down her cheeks. Not from pain. From emotion. From love. She felt him holding her, felt his love surrounding her, and she cried against his shoulder.

"It's okay," he whispered. "It's okay."

When she was ready, she nodded. He moved slowly, so slowly, watching her face, making sure she was okay.

"Look at me," he whispered.

She opened her eyes.

"I love you."

The world narrowed to just them. To whispered names and steady heartbeats.

Later, she looked up at him, tears still wet on her cheeks.

"Again," she whispered.

He laughed softly. "You're going to kill me."

"Then I'll bring you back."

He kissed her, and the afternoon slipped away.

---

They lay tangled together, the afternoon sun streaming through the window.

Cassandra traced patterns on his chest, his heartbeat steady beneath her ear. His fingers combed through her hair.

"I love you," he said, his voice soft.

"I love you too."

He rolled her onto her stomach, kissing down her spine. She shivered, arching into him.

_*_

Hours passed and the room was warm with them. When they finally caught their breath, her hands were gripping the sheets and his arms were still around her.

He followed, pulling her close as they both came undone.

They didn't leave the bed for hours.

---

Cassandra wore his shirt, making dinner in the small kitchen.

She moved with ease, her body still humming from their earlier passion. The kitchen was warm, filled with the smell of garlic and tomatoes.

Dante watched her from the doorway, his eyes dark with desire. She looked so domestic, so right.

"Distracting," she murmured.

"Good."

He walked up behind her, pressing against her, his hands roaming her body. She melted into his touch. His lips found her neck, soft and warm.

"I'll never get enough of you," he whispered.

She turned, kissing him. He lifted her onto the counter, spreading her legs.

_*_

The food was long forgotten. The kitchen was a mess of laughter and kisses and them.

---

Afterward, they shared a bath.

Her back was against his chest, his arms wrapped around her. He washed her, his hands gentle. The water was warm, the steam rising around them.

"I could stay here forever," she said.

"Then stay."

She leaned into him, content and loved.

---

They lay on a blanket outside, staring at the stars.

The sky was vast, infinite. The lake lapped gently against the shore. Cassandra was wrapped in his arms, her head on his chest.

He told her about his childhood—the pressure, the fear, the loneliness. He told her about his father's expectations, his mother's silence. He told her about the night he met Grace Hayes.

"I've never told anyone that," he said.

"Thank you for trusting me."

_*_

Under the stars, they held each other. Slow. Tender. A quiet rhythm that felt like a promise.

Her breath caught first, soft and overwhelming. He followed moments later, her name on his lips.

She felt completely free, completely loved.

"I've never felt like this before," she whispered.

"Neither have I."

---

Midnight arrived, cold and quiet.

Cassandra shivered, her body curling into itself. The night air had grown icy, the warmth of their earlier passion fading.

Dante felt her trembling. He laughed softly, pulling her closer.

"Cold?" he teased.

"I thought you liked rain," she murmured, her teeth chattering.

"I do. But I also like you warm." He kissed her forehead. "Come on. Inside."

He carried her inside, laying her on the bed. The fire crackled in the corner, casting warm shadows across the room.

"I need to close the doors," he said, moving toward the window.

Cassandra's eyes fluttered open. She watched him leave, a slow smile spreading across her lips.

Her hands moved on their own.

She touched herself, her fingers tracing her collarbone, her neck. A soft sound escaped her lips.

Dante turned.

He froze.

She was spread across the bed, her body glowing in the firelight. Her eyes were half-closed, her lips parted.

"Thought you wanted to sleep," he said, his voice rough.

She didn't answer. She just looked at him.

"Touch me," she whispered. "I need you to touch me."

Dante crossed the room in three steps. He knelt on the bed, his hands covering hers.

"Like this?" he asked, his touch gentle.

"Yes," she breathed. "Please."

"Why do you like this?" he murmured, his lips brushing her ear.

She couldn't answer. She just guided his hands, showing him exactly what she wanted.

_*_

The fire crackled. The night stretched on.

When it was over, she was in his arms.

"Look at me," he commanded softly.

She opened her eyes.

"I love you," he said.

"I love you too."

She trembled first, her body shuddering against his. He held her through it, then again, and again, until she was spent and shaking.

Only then did he follow, holding her close as he came undone.

She collapsed against him, her chest heaving.

"I love you," she whispered again.

"I love you too."

They fell asleep in each other's arms, the fire crackling softly in the corner.
