Cassandra woke with a knot in her stomach.

The sun was barely up, casting pale gray light through the curtains. Dante was still asleep beside her, his arm draped across her waist, his breathing slow and steady. She watched him for a moment, her heart aching.

Today, she was supposed to meet Adrian. Alone. He'd found something about her real father—the man on the birth certificate. The man she'd never known.

She slipped out of bed carefully, not wanting to wake him. But he stirred, his hand reaching for her.

"Where are you going?"

"Just getting water."

He sat up, his eyes sharp despite the early hour. "You're meeting Adrian today."

It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

"Not alone."

Cassandra turned to face him. "Dante—"

"I'm not letting you go alone." His voice was firm, unyielding. "Not after everything. Not when we don't know who we're dealing with."

"He's my uncle. He's been protecting me for years."

"And I've been protecting you for months. That doesn't mean I trust him completely." Dante ran a hand through his hair, frustration bleeding into his voice. "You don't know what he's walking you into. You don't know if this is a trap."

"It's not a trap."

"You don't know that."

She crossed the room, sitting on the edge of the bed. She took his hand.

"I need to do this alone," she said quietly. "Not because I don't trust you. Because I need to face this myself. I've been running from the truth my whole life. I need to stop."

Dante stared at her, his jaw tight. She could see the war in his eyes—the need to protect her, the need to let her fight.

Finally, he nodded. "Fine. But you take a tracker. And you check in every hour. If you miss a check-in, I'm coming for you."

"Okay."

"And if anything feels wrong—anything—you leave. You don't stay. You don't try to be brave. You run."

She leaned in, kissing him softly. "I promise."

---

Before Cassandra could leave, the doorbell rang.

Dante was on his feet immediately, his hand going to his gun. But when he opened the door, he relaxed—slightly.

Evan stood there, his arm still in a sling, his face pale but determined.

"I heard what happened," he said. "I want to help."

Dante stared at his brother. "You're still recovering."

"I'm fine." Evan stepped inside, his eyes finding Cassandra. "I want to help. Whatever you need."

Cassandra was surprised. She'd always liked Evan—his humor, his warmth, the way he made her feel less alone in the cold Moretti mansion. But she didn't expect him to show up now. Not after everything.

"You should be resting," she said.

"I've been resting for days. I'm going crazy." Evan smiled, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Besides, I owe you. Both of you."

---

Dante had to leave for a meeting. He didn't want to go—not with Cassandra leaving too—but it was important. Business that couldn't wait.

"I'll be back in two hours," he said, his hand cupping Cassandra's face. "Be careful."

"I will."

He kissed her forehead, then turned to Evan. "Watch over her."

"Always."

---

Evan stayed with Cassandra while she prepared to leave. They sat in the small kitchen, cups of tea in their hands.

"Can I ask you something?" Evan said.

"Sure."

"Why do you love him?"

Cassandra blinked. "What?"

"Dante." Evan's voice was soft, curious. "He's not an easy man to love. I know that better than anyone. So why?"

Cassandra was quiet for a moment. Then she smiled.

"Because he sees me," she said. "Not the girl with the necklace. Not the girl from the flower shop. Me. He sees my strength and my fear and my anger and my hope. And he loves all of it."

Evan nodded slowly. "He's never let anyone see him before. Not really."

"I know."

"He's different with you. Softer. Happier." Evan met her eyes. "I've never seen him like this. Not even with Isabella."

Cassandra's heart clenched at the name. But she didn't look away.

"I'm not Isabella."

"No." Evan smiled. "You're not."

---

They talked for a while longer—about the family, about Vincent, about what it was like to grow up in the Moretti shadow.

Evan told her about his own struggles. The pressure to be perfect. The fear of failing. The loneliness that came with being the spare heir.

"I was never supposed to matter," he said quietly. "Dante was the one who would carry the name. I was just... there. In the background. Screaming for attention."

Cassandra's heart ached. "You matter."

"I know." He looked at her. "You're the first person who's ever made me feel like I do."

She reached across the table, squeezing his hand. "You're not alone, Evan."

"I know." He squeezed back. "Neither are you."

---

Cassandra left an hour later.

She drove to the meeting place—a small café on the outskirts of the city, quiet and unassuming. Her heart pounded as she parked and walked inside.

Adrian was waiting at a corner table. He looked up when she entered, his face breaking into a relieved smile.

But he wasn't alone.

There was a man sitting beside him. A man Cassandra had never seen before—but somehow, she knew him.

He had her eyes. Her nose. Her chin.

Her father.
