Elena's private quarters were warm, filled with the scent of lavender and old books.

Cassandra stood in the center of the room, her heart pounding. The silver box sat in her hands, its surface cool against her trembling fingers. Elena Moretti sat across from her, her composed mask finally cracked, tears glistening in her eyes.

"Open it," Elena whispered.

Cassandra lifted the lid. Inside, nestled on velvet, was a key—delicate, intricate, ancient. It matched the pendant perfectly. Same silver. Same Celtic knot design. Same worn edges.

Cassandra's breath caught. "This is—"

"The key," Elena confirmed. "To unlock what's inside the necklace. Your mother gave it to me the night she died."

Cassandra looked up. "You knew my mother. You were friends."

Elena nodded slowly. "We were very close. She trusted me with her life. With yours." Her voice cracked. "She made me promise to keep the key safe until you were ready."

"And you've been holding it for twenty years."

"Yes."

Cassandra's jaw tightened. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you find me?"

"Because I was afraid." Elena's voice was raw. "I watched your mother die. I watched her sacrifice everything for the truth. And I couldn't—" She stopped, her hand pressed to her mouth. "I couldn't let that happen to you."

Cassandra stared at her. The cold, distant woman who'd barely looked at her was crumbling before her eyes.

"You loved her," Cassandra said quietly.

"She was my best friend." Tears spilled down Elena's cheeks. "And I failed her."

"No." Cassandra stepped forward. "You didn't. You kept the key safe. You kept your promise."

Elena looked up at her, her eyes red and swollen. "You're so like her. So brave. So determined."

"I don't feel brave."

"Bravery isn't about feeling brave. It's about doing what needs to be done anyway." Elena smiled through her tears. "She said that to me once. The night she died."

Cassandra clutched the box to her chest. "I'll make her proud. I promise."

"I know you will."

---

Cassandra walked into the hallway, the key clutched in her hand. Dante was waiting for her, his back against the wall, his arms crossed.

His eyes met hers. "You got it."

"Yes." She held up the box. "This is it. The key to everything."

Dante's jaw tightened. "Good. Now we can unlock the necklace."

"Not yet." Cassandra shook her head. "Elena said the key and the necklace have to be used together. By me. Only I can access the data."

"Then we'll figure it out. Together."

Cassandra looked at him. His face was hard, controlled. But there was something in his eyes—something almost tender.

"Dante," she said softly. "What happens after we unlock it? After we find the truth?"

He stepped closer. "We expose them. We make them pay for what they did to your mother."

"And then?"

He was silent for a long moment. Then he reached out, his fingers brushing her cheek.

"I don't know," he admitted. "I've never thought beyond the next threat. The next battle."

Cassandra's heart ached. "Maybe you should start."

---

Dante turned away, his jaw tight.

"I've been thinking," he said slowly. "About how to keep you safe."

Cassandra's heart pounded. "What do you mean?"

"You're not safe here. Not while my family is watching, not while the enemies are closing in." He turned back to face her. "I need to make sure no one touches you. No one doubts your place by my side."

"My place?"

"Yes." He stepped closer, his eyes burning into hers. "I need to claim you publicly. As mine."

Cassandra's breath caught. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying—" He stopped. His hand came up, cupping her face. "I'm saying I need to propose to you. A fake engagement. To keep you safe. To keep you close."

Her heart stopped. "A fake engagement."

"Yes." His voice was quiet. "If you're my fiancée, no one will dare touch you. My enemies will think twice. My family will have to accept you. And I'll have a reason to keep you by my side."

Cassandra's hands were shaking. "Dante—"

"I know it's not real." His thumb traced her jawline. "But it's the only way I can protect you. The only way I can keep you safe."

She stared at him. His eyes were intense, burning into hers. She saw the desperation behind them. The fear. The need.

"Okay," she whispered. "Yes."

Dante's breath caught. "Yes?"

"Yes. I'll do it. I'll be your fiancée."

He pulled her into his arms, his grip tight. His face was buried in her hair.

"Thank you," he murmured. "Thank you."

Cassandra clung to him, her heart pounding.

It was fake. It was all fake.

So why did it feel so real?

---

That night, Cassandra sat on her bed, the key and the necklace in her hands.

She'd spent hours examining them. The key fit perfectly into the pendant—a tiny slot she'd never noticed before. When she inserted it, the pendant clicked open, revealing the microchip inside.

But nothing else happened. The data remained locked.

Not yet, she thought. Soon.

A knock on her door.

"Come in."

Dante stepped inside. He was dressed casually, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He looked different—softer, less guarded.

"I wanted to check on you," he said.

"I'm fine."

He walked toward her, his eyes on the necklace. "Any luck?"

"Not yet. But we're close."

"Good." He sat beside her on the bed. "We'll figure it out. Together."

Cassandra looked at him. "You keep saying that."

"Because it's true." He met her eyes. "You're not alone, Emma. You never have to be alone again."

Something shifted in her chest. She leaned into him, her head on his shoulder.

"Hold me," she whispered. "Just for tonight."

Dante wrapped his arms around her. His embrace was warm, steady.

"Whatever happens," he said quietly. "I'll protect you. I promise."

Cassandra closed her eyes.

Dante watched her and smiled.
