Dante was recovering slowly.

The bullet wound was healing—the doctors said he was lucky, that the damage could have been permanent. But the emotional damage ran deeper. He barely spoke. Barely ate. He stared at the wall, lost in his own thoughts, his eyes hollow and empty.

Cassandra stayed by his side. She refused to leave. She talked to him, held his hand, reminded him of everything they'd survived. But he was slipping away from her—drifting into a darkness she couldn't reach.

"You need to eat," she said softly, holding a spoon to his lips.

He turned his head away.

"Dante."

"I'm not hungry."

"You haven't eaten in two days."

"I'm not hungry."

She set the spoon down. Her hand found his.

"I need you," she whispered. "We need you. You can't give up."

He didn't respond.

---

The visitor arrived the next morning.

Cassandra was in the hallway, getting coffee, when she saw her. Elena. Dante's mother. The woman who had betrayed them all.

She was dressed in black. Her hair was disheveled. Her face was pale. She was crying.

"Please," Elena whispered. "I need to see him."

Cassandra's blood ran cold. "You can't be here."

"I know you hate me. I know what I did was unforgivable. But I have information. About Salvatore. About the people still after you. I can help."

Cassandra stared at her. Her hands curled into fists.

"You betrayed your own son."

"I know." Elena's voice cracked. "I know what I did. I've been living with the guilt every single day. But I'm not here to ask for forgiveness. I'm here to help."

---

Cassandra made a decision.

She didn't trust Elena. She didn't forgive her. But she would use her. Elena knew the enemy's secrets. She knew their plans. She could help them end this.

She led Elena to a private room. She closed the door.

"Talk," she said.

Elena told her everything. About Salvatore's network. About the remaining threats. About a safe house where Salvatore kept his most valuable documents—the evidence that could destroy him and everyone who worked with him.

Cassandra listened. Her heart pounded. Her mind raced.

"You're sure about this?" she asked.

"I'm sure."

Cassandra nodded slowly. "Then we'll do it. But if you betray us again—"

"I won't." Elena met her eyes. "I swear it."

---

Cassandra brought the information to Evan and Adrian.

They gathered in the hospital cafeteria—a quiet corner, away from prying eyes. Cassandra told them about the safe house. About the documents. About the plan.

"We need to raid it," she said. "We need to get the evidence before Salvatore can destroy it."

Evan nodded. "I can get the men. Marco's been arrested, but I have other contacts."

Adrian nodded. "I'll help. Whatever you need."

Cassandra hesitated. "There's something else. We need Dante."

---

She found him in his hospital room.

He was sitting up now—barely. His face was pale. His eyes were hollow.

"I need you," she said.

He looked at her.

"I know you're hurting. I know you've been betrayed by everyone you've ever trusted. But you're not the only one." She sat beside him, taking his hand. "I've been betrayed too. By my grandmother. By Jane. By everyone I thought I could trust. But I'm still fighting. For you. For our baby. For the life we deserve."

Dante stared at her. His eyes flickered with something—pain, maybe. Or hope.

"I can't do this without you," she whispered. "I need you."

---

Dante made a decision.

He would do it. Not for revenge. Not for himself. For Cassandra. For their baby. For the future they deserved.

"I'll do it," he said quietly.

Cassandra's eyes filled with tears. "Thank you."

He squeezed her hand. "Always."

---

That night, Cassandra didn't receive any message. No threat. No warning. Nothing.

For the first time in weeks, she slept peacefully.

---

Cassandra woke to the sound of machines beeping.

She'd fallen asleep in the chair beside Dante's hospital bed, her head resting on the edge of the mattress, her hand still wrapped around his. Her neck ached. Her back was stiff. But she didn't care.

She sat up slowly, blinking against the morning light. Dante was awake, watching her. His eyes were clearer than they'd been in days—less hollow, more present.

"Good morning," he said quietly.

"Good morning." She reached for his hand, squeezing gently. "How are you feeling?"

"Better." He paused. "Hungry."

Her heart swelled. "That's the first time you've said that in days."

He smiled—a small, tired smile. "I guess I'm finally coming back to life."

---

She helped him sit up.

He was still weak—his movements slow, his body heavy. But there was color in his face now. His eyes were brighter. The spark was returning.

She fluffed his pillows. She adjusted his blankets. She kissed his forehead.

"I'm proud of you," she whispered.

He caught her hand. "For what?"

"For fighting. For not giving up."

He squeezed her hand. "I had a reason to fight."

---

Samantha arrived at noon.

She burst through the door with her arms full of files—manila folders stacked so high she could barely see over them. Her hair was disheveled. Her eyes were bright with determination.

"Cass!" She set the files on the table with a thud. "I've been busy."

Cassandra blinked. "What is all this?"

"Research." Samantha pulled out a chair, sitting down heavily. "You've been a little preoccupied with the whole 'hospital vigil' thing, so I decided to do some digging of my own."

---

Samantha explained what she'd found.

She'd spent the past week digging into Salvatore's past—his connections, his businesses, his weaknesses. She'd traced financial records, property deeds, offshore accounts. She'd followed paper trails that led to dead ends and paper trails that led to something more.

"I found a safe house," Samantha said. "In the countryside. It's where he keeps his most valuable documents—the evidence that ties him to everything. The murders. The conspiracy. The whole thing."

Cassandra's heart pounded. "How did you find it?"

"Elena's information helped. But I also found something else." Samantha pulled out a photograph—an aerial view of a large property surrounded by trees. "This is it. The safe house. It's isolated. Guarded. But it's not impenetrable."

They gathered in the hospital room that evening.

Cassandra, Dante, Samantha, Evan, Adrian. They reviewed Samantha's research, Elena's information, everything they knew.

The plan was simple. Dante would lead the raid. Evan, Adrian, and Daniel would provide backup. Samantha would stay with Cassandra—safe, protected.

"It's dangerous," Dante said quietly. "But it's the only way."

"We're with you," Evan said.

"Always," Adrian added.

The night before the raid, Cassandra sat beside Dante.

The room was quiet. The machines beeped softly. The world outside was dark.

She held his hand. She didn't want to let go.

"Come back to me," she whispered.

He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a kiss to her palm.

"Always."

---

The next morning, Dante and his men left for the raid.

Cassandra watched them go from the hospital window. She pressed her hand to her stomach. The baby kicked—strong, steady.

"Come back," she whispered. "Please come back."

  • THE DON'S MISSING PIECE    An Uninvited Guest

Dante took Cassandra to look at properties by the lake. They'd been searching for weeks—ever since that night on the porch when he'd promised her a real home. He'd made calls, talked to real estate agents, narrowed down the list. Now, finally, they were here. The first house was too big. A sprawling mansion with more rooms than they could ever fill. Cassandra walked through it, her footsteps echoing against the marble floors, and shook her head."Too cold," she said. "Too empty."Dante nodded. He didn't argue.---The second house was too small.A tiny cabin with one bedroom and a kitchen that barely fit two people. Cassandra stood in the doorway, looking at the cramped space, and laughed."We'd kill each other within a week."Dante grinned. "Probably."---The third house was perfect. It was a small cottage on the edge of the water—wooden, warm, surrounded by trees. The paint was peeling. The floors creaked. The roof needed work. Her mind was foggy.Dante was beside her, just as exhausted. He'd been taking turns with her—walking Grace around the room, singing softly, begging her to sleep. His voice was hoarse. His eyes were red."She hates us," he muttered."She doesn't hate us.
