Chapter 9

I could not breathe. The crystal showed Vaelor on one knee, golden blood shining against his scales where the spear had cut deep. His face stayed calm, but I saw the strain in the set of his jaw, the way his tail flicked with pain instead of power. My brother Kael stood a short distance away, sword raised, shouting orders that echoed through the crystal like accusations.

My legs moved before my mind caught up. I left the crystal glowing behind me and ran for the cave entrance, silk slipping off one shoulder, my heavy breasts bouncing with every hurried step. My soft belly jiggled, thighs rubbing together, but I did not slow. The promise I had given Vaelor cracked under the weight of what I was seeing.

I stepped out into the cold air. Wind whipped my hair across my face. “Stop!” I shouted, voice cracking. “Kael, stop this right now!”

Heads turned. My brother’s eyes widened when he saw me. For a split second something like relief crossed his face. Then it hardened into the same stern look he had given me my whole life whenever I took an extra helping at dinner.

“Sera!” he called. “Get away from that monster. We are here to bring you home.”

Vaelor’s head snapped toward me. Even wounded, he rose fast and moved between me and the line of soldiers, wings half-spread, one arm outstretched to keep me behind him. “Sera, go back inside,” he growled, voice rough with pain and something fiercer. “You promised.”

“I cannot watch you bleed for me,” I answered, stepping around his arm. My bare feet scraped on stone. My thick thighs trembled, but I kept moving until I stood beside him. “These men are my family. My brother. I will not let them die either.”

Kael lowered his sword a fraction. “Come here, little sister. The dragon has clouded your mind. Mother is waiting. She has not slept since you vanished.”

The words should have pulled me forward. Instead they sat heavy in my chest. Mother. The same woman who had pinched my waist and whispered that no decent man would want arms that could not circle me twice. The same brother who had once laughed when village boys called me “the soft one who would never run away from anything.”

I looked at Vaelor. His golden eyes met mine, steady even with blood still running down his side. One large hand reached out and rested on my round belly, not to pull me back but to steady me. The touch was gentle, almost protective, his fingers spreading across the soft rolls I had spent years trying to hide.

“You see her now,” Vaelor said to Kael, voice low and even. “Look at your sister. Really look. She is not clouded. She is finally seen. These curves you mocked are the reason I woke. This body you called too much is exactly enough for me.”

Kael’s face twisted. “She is not yours to keep. The king has offered gold for her return. A lot of gold. Enough to change everything for our family.”

The words landed like a slap. I felt my stomach drop. “Gold?” My voice came out small. “You came for gold?”

Kael shifted his weight. “We came for you. The reward is just… a benefit. Sera, be reasonable. You have always been the dreamer in the library. This creature is dangerous. Come home where you belong.”

Vaelor’s hand tightened on my belly. Not hard. Just enough to remind me he was still here. Still choosing me. “She belongs where she is wanted,” he said quietly. “Not where she is tolerated.”

Tears burned my eyes. I stepped closer to Vaelor, my soft side pressing against his scaled arm. My heavy breasts brushed his skin. The contact sent warmth through me even in the middle of chaos. “I do not know what to believe anymore,” I whispered to him. “Every time you touch me I feel beautiful. Wanted. But they are my blood. They raised me. How do I turn my back on that?”

Vaelor turned his head. His breath brushed my temple. “You do not have to turn your back tonight. But you do not have to run toward a lie either.” His thumb traced a slow circle over the curve of my belly. “Stay with me a little longer. Let me show you what real choice feels like when it is not soaked in shame.”

Kael took a step forward. “Sera, enough talk. Come now or we will take you by force.”

The soldiers behind him raised their weapons again. My heart slammed against my ribs. I felt torn in two — one half aching for the family that had never really seen me, the other half leaning into the dragon who saw every inch and still called it treasure.

I lifted my chin. “I am not a prize to be collected, Kael. Not by you. Not by the king. Not by anyone.”

Vaelor’s wing curved around me like a shield. His voice dropped, meant only for me. “Then choose, my love. Stay behind me and let me protect what is mine. Or step forward and I will let you go if that is what you truly need. But know this — if you walk away now, I will not stop loving this body. I will only stop being able to hold it.”

My throat closed. I looked from my brother’s angry face to Vaelor’s steady golden eyes. The wound in his side still bled. His hand never left my belly. He was hurt, outnumbered, yet every line of him said he would stand here until the mountain fell if it meant keeping me safe.

I slid my hand over his, fingers sinking into the space between his larger ones. “I am staying,” I said, voice shaking but clear. “For now. Until I understand what I really want.”

Kael cursed and raised his sword again.

Vaelor’s body tensed, ready to fight once more. But before the first blow could fall, a sharp pain lanced through my own side — not from any wound, but from somewhere deep inside. Heat bloomed low in my belly, right under Vaelor’s palm. My skin tingled where he touched me. Something ancient and unfamiliar stirred in my blood.

Vaelor’s eyes widened. He felt it too.

“What is happening to me?” I gasped, clutching his arm.

His voice came out strained, almost awed. “Your magic. It is waking. Because you chose to stay.”

The soldiers charged.

And in that moment I realized the choice I had just made might cost us everything.
