THE DEPTH OF TREACHERY

The rain didn't fall so much as attack. It came sideways off the harbor, needling through Aria Linley's soaked dress, and still she ran, because stopping meant thinking, and thinking meant remembering the number on Dr. Evans's clipboard.

Fifty thousand dollars. Tomorrow night.

Her heels punched through puddle after puddle, black water climbing her calves, ruining shoes she couldn't afford to ruin. Neon signs bled pink and gold across the wet pavement like something spilled and never cleaned up. She held the paycheck envelope against her chest with both arms, the way you'd hold something already dying, and let herself believe, just for these last few blocks, that it would be enough.

It wouldn't be enough. She knew that. But Liam would help. Liam always helped.

Three years. Three years of him sitting beside her in waiting rooms that smelled like antiseptic and fear, three years of his thumb tracing slow circles on the back of her hand while machines beeped out her mother's borrowed time. He'd been the one steady thing after her father died, the one person who hadn't looked at her like a problem to be managed. We'll figure it out together, he used to say. Our savings account. Our plan.

She reached his building soaked to the bone and shaking so hard her key missed the lock twice. The elevator was out again. Of course it was. She took the stairs two at a time, lungs burning, praying the whole way up like it was a language she'd only just remembered she knew.

"Liam." The door swung open under her hand. "Liam, please be awake, I need you, the hospital, they said tomorrow night, they said—"

The word died in her throat.

The apartment wasn't silent. Down the short hallway, through a door left open just enough to spill warm light onto the floorboards, she heard a laugh she'd know anywhere, high and bright and utterly wrong in this moment. Then a groan that wasn't hers.

Something in Aria's chest folded inward, quiet and complete, like a house collapsing without ever making a sound.

She walked toward that light the way you walk toward a car crash you already know is your own, feet bare and silent, rain still dripping off the ends of her hair onto her collarbones. She pushed the door open with two fingers.

Liam. Tangled in sheets that weren't hers. And beneath him, one hand fisted in his hair, was Chloe.

Chloe, who had sat at Aria's kitchen table yesterday afternoon holding her hand while Aria cried about ventilators and second mortgages. Chloe, who had known, every single day for three years, exactly what this would do to her, and had decided it was worth it anyway.

Chloe saw her first. She didn't reach for the sheet. She smiled instead, slow and satisfied, like a woman finishing a meal she'd been looking forward to.

"Aria." Liam scrambled backward, dragging a hand through his hair, and for one half second something flickered across his face that might have been shame, if shame were a thing he still owned. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be at your gig."

Aria opened her mouth and nothing came out. The grief hit her like a second storm, this one entirely inside her ribs, and it took the floor out from under her before the tears even started. When they came, they were hot against her frozen cheeks, and her voice, when she finally found it, sounded like it belonged to someone very small and very far away.

"My mother is dying." Her hands had curled into fists without her permission. "And you're here. Both of you. You're here."

Chloe laughed, unhurried, unbothered, sitting up like this was simply an inconvenient interruption to her evening. "Enough with the martyr routine, Aria. It's exhausting. Your mother has been dying for a year. You cry, you fall apart, you disappear into hospital corridors for weeks at a time. Did you actually think a man like Liam signed up to spend his twenties babysitting your tragedy?"

"Shut up." The words tore out of her raw. She turned to Liam, searching his face for the man who used to hold her while she sobbed into his shoulder. "Tell me she's lying. Tell me you didn't. The savings account, Liam, I need it tonight, they're taking my mother off the machines tomorrow—"

Something in his expression closed like a door.

"There is no savings account." His voice had gone flat, stripped of every soft thing it had ever pretended to hold.

The words didn't make sense. They arrived in pieces, and Aria stood there trying to fit them together into something that wasn't happening. "What?"

"I emptied it last week." He was already pulling on a pair of sweatpants, already moving with the careless efficiency of a man cleaning up a mess he'd stopped feeling guilty about. "And that's the least of it. You don't have a studio anymore either."

The floor tilted. Actually tilted, the whole room dropping half an inch beneath her feet. "What did you do."

"I still had power of attorney." He said it like a fact of weather, unremarkable, nothing to apologize for. "From after your dad died. You never revoked it. I had debts, Aria. Real ones. Men who don't send letters, they send people. So I sold the studio. To the Navarro family. It cleared everything."

"You sold my father's studio." The scream that tore out of her didn't sound like her own voice at all. It came from somewhere lower, somewhere old, and the lamp on Liam's nightstand cracked down its glass throat with a sound like a struck bell. Neither of them noticed. "That was everything we had left. That was going to pay for her treatment—"

"Your mother is already gone, Aria, she's just still breathing!" Liam crossed the room fast, looming over her in a way he'd never once done in three years, and something about the new shape of his face frightened her more than anything he'd said. "I saved my own life. Go ahead, call the police. The Navarros own half the precinct. Open your mouth about this and they won't just pull the plug on your mother. They'll make sure you're never found."

From the bed, Chloe watched the whole thing unfold with the mild interest of someone flipping channels. "Face it. You're soft. You're breakable. This city eats girls like you before breakfast."

Liam's fingers closed around her arm hard enough to bruise, and he hauled her toward the door before she could find another word to throw at him. Her phone left her hand and met the wall, screen spidering into a hundred silver cracks, her one thread to the outside world snapped in an instant. The door opened. The rain roared in to meet her. He shoved her out into the dark stairwell and the lock clicked shut behind her like a period at the end of a sentence she hadn't finished reading.

Aria stood there dripping, hollowed out, a woman with nothing left to lose because everything had already been taken in the span of four hours. Her mother. Her money. Her love. Her best friend. Her father's last legacy, sold off like scrap to men who collected debts in blood instead of dollars.

She walked back down into the storm because there was nowhere else to walk. The city swallowed her, block by block, her mind gone white and wordless with grief, her feet moving on nothing but momentum.

She never saw the black SUV idling at the mouth of the alley two streets down, engine running, headlights dark, three men inside it watching her come closer with the patient, unhurried interest of hunters who already know exactly how the night is going to end.

  • THE ECHO OF YOUR BLOOD: The Vampire Kings Fake Fiancée    Chapter 7: The court Takes Notice

The flashbulbs were still bursting behind Aria's eyelids long after the car pulled away from the Obsidian Room. The ring sat cold and unfamiliar and impossibly heavy on her finger, like it had been carved from something older than metal. She sat pressed against the window, the city sliding past in smears of neon and rain, and let herself, just for the length of the drive, stop performing.Valerius didn't speak. He never did on the way home from these things, as if the mask took something out of him that needed silence to rebuild. But his hand found hers on the seat between them, cool fingers curling loosely around her knuckles, and he didn't let go the entire ride back. For three days after that, something in the mansion softened. She woke without the immediate lurch of panic, without needing a full minute to remember whose sheets she was tangled in. There was coffee waiting on the balcony most mornings, dark and unbearably strong, exactly the way she liked it though she'd never once

  • THE ECHO OF YOUR BLOOD: The Vampire Kings Fake Fiancée    The Ring And the Rooftop

Two days felt like ten minutes and also like a lifetime, the way time does when you're waiting for something you're dreading.Aria stood in front of a mirror taller than she was, wearing a dress she hadn't chosen, in a room she hadn't asked for, in a life that had stopped consulting her about anything at all. The gown was the color of dried blood, cut close through the waist and open at the back, and it fit her so perfectly she wondered, with a small cold twist in her stomach, exactly how he'd known her measurements without ever asking."You look like you're about to walk into a fight," said a voice from the doorway, amused. She turned. A man leaned against the frame, dark-skinned, sharp-jawed, dressed in a tuxedo that fit him with the same unbothered elegance Valerius wore his like a second skin. Unlike Valerius, though, this one smiled easily, like smiling hadn't cost him anything in centuries."I am about to walk into a fight," Aria said. "I just don't get a weapon.""You get bette

Ten minutes.Aria stared at the pen in his hand like it was the blade the cartel man had pressed to her throat an hour ago. Different metal. Same choice."You'll want to read it," Valerius said, and there was something almost generous in the way he said it, the way a man might offer a condemned prisoner a last cigarette. "Most people don't bother. Most people are wrong to skip that part."She read it. Every clause, every line of black ink promising away pieces of herself she hadn't known she still had. Her hands shook so badly the paper rattled, but she made herself finish it, because if she was going to lose everything tonight, she wasn't going to lose it blind. At the bottom, above the signature line, was a blank space labeled ADDITIONAL TERMS."There's room here." She looked up at him for the first time since he'd handed her the pen. "For me to add something."Something flickered behind his eyes, brief and unreadable. "There is.""My mother is never told what I am to you. Not the t

  • THE ECHO OF YOUR BLOOD: The Vampire Kings Fake Fiancée    INSIDE THE DRAGON'S LAIR

Aria's eyes opened slowly, like they were being pried apart against her will. The last thing she remembered was rain and headlights and the taste of copper in her mouth. Now there was no rain at all. Only warmth, and the smell of sandalwood, and something underneath it like cedar wood left out in the sun.She wasn't lying on wet asphalt. She was sinking into a mattress so soft it felt like it might swallow her whole. She sat up fast, too fast, and the room tilted sideways for a second before settling. Her stage dress was gone. In its place was a black silk robe, cool and heavy against her bare skin, the kind of fabric that had never once touched a body like hers."Vitals are stable, but her adrenaline is still spiking." The voice was close, and shaking.Aria turned her head and found three people standing beside the bed in white medical coats, sweat shining on their foreheads, hands trembling around equipment she didn't recognize. Not one of them met her eyes. This was not a hospital.

  • THE ECHO OF YOUR BLOOD: The Vampire Kings Fake Fiancée    HOLY BLOOD, BLACK RAIN

The rain had turned to needles by the time Aria stopped feeling her feet. Somewhere back near Liam's building she'd lost a shoe, and she hadn't even noticed until the broken asphalt started tearing at her skin. It didn't matter. Nothing hurt as much as the hollow place in her chest where her whole life used to sit.No phone. No money. No home. No father's legacy left to fight for. In one night, every single thing holding her upright had been kicked out from under her at once.Headlights swept across the wet street behind her, slow and patient, the kind of slow that wasn't looking for a parking spot. Aria's heart slammed into her throat. A black SUV crawled along the curb, matching her pace exactly, like it already knew she had nowhere left to run. They won't just shut off your mom's machines. They'll make sure you disappear too.Liam's voice, still fresh in her ears, snapped something awake in her legs. She ran. Her soaked dress dragged against her knees and she ran anyway, ducking in
