He ran then, abandoning the women to whatever horrors fate had in store for them. Thrusting the magic calabash on the ground as he was instructed by Matendechere, he forced himself to move as fast as his feet would carry him. The worst thing he could possibly do was take a wrong turn in that accursed labyrinth, and yet it happened. Beyond the sitting room where he had encountered the woman at the piano, he went stupidly in the wrong direction, which he realized quickly when he came to an intersection that would take him either east or west from a wall on which hung a painting depicting the ogrism feasting on a woman's head.

As he turned he looked behind him to quickly make certain he was not being followed.
