CHAPTER 2:TENSION IN THE OFFICE

Three weeks into her new role, Elena Cruz had learned two things about Alexander Drake.

First—he demanded perfection and somehow expected it delivered effortlessly.

Second—he had a way of looking at her that made it hard to breathe.

From early morning meetings to late-night calls, she shadowed his every move. She organized his schedule, prepared his reports, and anticipated his needs before he voiced them.

She had memorized his habits.

Two shots of espresso at eight.

Black coffee at three.

Silence before major presentations.

Still, nothing ever seemed enough.

“Miss Cruz.”

His voice cut cleanly through the quiet hum of the office.

She straightened immediately. “Yes, Mr. Drake?”

“Step inside.”

Elena rose, clutching her tablet, and walked into his glass-walled office.

The tension between them was immediate—sharp and invisible, like a wire pulled too tight.

He didn’t look up from his screen.

“Did you review the numbers for the Walker proposal?”

“Yes, sir. I found a discrepancy in the third-quarter projections and adjusted the model accordingly.”

That got his attention.

His gaze lifted slowly, those piercing blue eyes locking onto hers.

“You adjusted my numbers?”

Her stomach tightened, but she held her ground.

“Yes. The forecast was off by four percent. The market indicators didn’t align with the original projections.”

He stood abruptly and rounded the desk.

Up close, his presence was overwhelming—controlled power wrapped in quiet intensity.

“You corrected me without consulting me first?”

Elena forced herself not to step back.

“I thought accuracy mattered more than protocol.”

Silence.

Dangerous and heavy.

Then, slowly, a smirk curved his lips.

“You’ve got nerve, Miss Cruz.”

“Would you prefer I stayed quiet and let you present a flawed report?”

His gaze sharpened, studying her—long, deliberate, assessing.

Then he leaned in slightly, his voice dropping.

“You’re either incredibly bold… or incredibly foolish.”

Her pulse raced.

“Maybe both.”

For a brief moment, something shifted.

The tension didn’t disappear—but it changed.

Deepened.

His gaze flickered, dropping—just for a second—to her lips before he straightened, composure snapping back into place.

“Have the presentation ready by six,” he said coolly. “And next time, consult me before making changes. I don’t like surprises.”

“Yes, Mr. Drake.”

She turned to leave.

“Miss Cruz.”

His voice stopped her.

Softer this time.

She glanced back.

“…You were right about the numbers.”

Her breath caught.

“Excuse me?”

“Four percent,” he said. “You caught it.”

A pause.

“Good work.”

The words were simple—but from him, they carried weight.

“Thank you, sir.”

“Don’t let it go to your head.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”

But as she stepped out of his office, a small, satisfied smile touched her lips.

By evening, most of the office had emptied, but the top floor remained lit.

Elena sat at her desk, typing steadily, her fingers aching as she finalized the presentation.

Movement behind the glass caught her attention.

Alexander.

He was pacing.

Tension radiated from him, even at a distance.

After a moment’s hesitation, she stood, walked to his door, and knocked lightly.

“Come in.”

She stepped inside.

“Mr. Drake, you should go home. You’ve been here since six this morning.”

He looked up sharply.

“And you’re still here. Should I tell you the same?”

“I’m finishing your slides for tomorrow.”

He exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck.

“You’re efficient, I’ll give you that. But you don’t have to impress me by overworking yourself.”

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

“Who says I’m trying to impress you?”

His brows lifted slightly, amusement flickering.

“Careful, Miss Cruz. I might start believing you enjoy challenging me.”

“Only when you deserve it.”

A quiet beat passed.

Then he laughed.

Low. Unexpected.

It sent a flutter through her chest.

“You really aren’t like the others.”

“Should I take that as a compliment?”

“You should take it as a warning.”

Their eyes locked.

Something unspoken sparked—sharp, undeniable.

For a moment, the world beyond the glass walls faded into nothing.

Then his phone buzzed.

The spell broke instantly.

He turned away, his voice returning to its usual cool edge.

“That will be all, Miss Cruz.”

She hesitated—just for a second—before nodding.

“Goodnight, Mr. Drake.”

“Goodnight.”

As the elevator descended, Elena leaned back against the mirrored wall, her pulse unsteady.

Every interaction with him left her off balance.

Curious.

Drawn in.

He was cold. Demanding. Impossible.

Yet beneath that control, she had glimpsed something else.

Something human.

Something guarded.

And despite her better judgment—

She wanted to understand it.

Inside his office, Alexander Drake stood by the window, staring out at the city lights.

He had built his life on control.

Precision. Discipline. Distance.

Walls that no one crossed.

But Elena Cruz…

She was different.

Smart. Defiant. Unafraid.

Dangerous.

He loosened his tie, exhaling slowly.

She’s trouble.

And I don’t do trouble.

Yet even as he shut off the lights, one thought lingered—

Unwelcome. Persistent.

For the first time in years…

He wasn’t entirely sure he was the one in control.
