Hansville, Germany
The snowflakes were cool and delicate as they landed on her face, their tiny crystals melting on her skin. She shut her eyes, sinking into a moment that felt endless, stretched thin by the vast white.
“Dahlia,” a voice cut through her thoughts. She looked up, startled.
“Coming,” brushing snow off her heavy coat as she stood. Tod shoved a mug of hot cocoa into her hands. “You’re going to turn into an icicle out here. What’s your deal?” Jason handed her a cookie. “Here, eat this before you start crying again.” A small smile broke through. “See? Told you she’d crack,” Tod said, grinning. “Love you guys,” Dahlia said, pulling them into a hug. “Yeah, yeah, we love you more,” Tod replied, patting her back. “You’ll get through this. Now, let’s hit the antique shops before you freeze solid. I need few more gifts to get” Jason made a face behind Tod’s back, and Dahlia laughed. “Keep that up and your face might stick like that,” Tod warned, pointing at Jason. By the time they reached the hotel, Dahlia was drained. She kissed their cheeks and retreated to her room, grabbing her iPad to sketch. Tears fell again as she replayed the moment she’d overheard Henry in his office, the door slightly open.
“She’s just a dumb intern,” laughing with his secretary. “I’m bringing her home for the holidays to shut my family up.” “You, sure you’re not into her? I’ve seen the way you look at her.” “Relax, I’m dumping her in couple of months” It stung. She’d trusted him, believed in his charm. He’d been nothing but polite, never pushing things too far.Tod had warned her, though. “There’s something off about him,” he’d said. “Those eyes… they’re dark. Be careful.” Tod always swore he had a sixth sense for people.
She grabbed her coat and slipped out the back of the hotel, wandering into the woods. It stung, why did he do that, she really liked him. The air was crisp, quiet, unreal, almost.
Then a scent hit her, sweet and sharp, she liked it and something else she couldn’t place. It warmed her chest as she followed it deeper.
Another smell, metallic and heavy. Blood. She kept walking, surprised at how far it carried.
“Guess I’ve got a bloodhound’s nose or something,” she muttered to herself.
Then, she saw him—a massive wolf, his leg caught in a trap.
She rushed over, and his eyes locked onto hers, tracking her every move like he understood her.
Dahlia yanked off her gloves and gritted her teeth as she pried at the trap’s jaws, cutting herself in the process her hands slick with blood.
“Almost there,” she whispered, and he lifted his leg gingerly, their blood mingling with his.
Her stomach felt warm. “Don’t eat me after I save you, deal?” she joked, meeting his gaze.
She smiled faintly, then reached out to touch him. He nuzzled her bleeding hand, his eyes shifting, softening.
Liking her hands.
Dahlia pulled back, startled, but he leaned into her, and before she knew it, she was wrapping her arms around him. “You’re softer than I expected,” she admitted, her voice barely audible.
He growled, low, warning—and she turned to see a hunter with a rifle aimed at the wolf.
“Move, little girl he’s mine,” the hunter barked.
“Not happening,” Dahlia shot back, stepping between them.
The wolf shifted to the side, and the hunter fired, but Dahlia lunged in front of the shot. A chorus of growls erupted as the pack emerged from the trees, circling.
“What the hell are they feeding these things?” the hunter muttered, bolting.
The wolf, shifted, standing tall. “Motherfucker’s dead,” he snarled to his pack, then knelt beside Dahlia, hey, stay with me.
Open your eyes. Dahlia did to see a bare-chested man with long hair, his eyes a blue gray like the wolf.
Wow, I’m dying she thought.
The roar of a jet sky engine cut through the air. He threw on some clothes, scooped her up, put her on the jet sky and sped toward the hospital, his foot throbbing in pain.
Hansville, General hospital
Dahlia blinked awake to see Todd and Jason hovering over her.
“Girl, you scared the shit out of us,” Todd said, exhaling hard. “You’re okay, though. Just the arm. What the hell were you doing in the woods?”
“I…,” she gestured weakly toward the water glass, took a sip. “I freed a wolf. It was trapped.”
“A wolf?” Todd raised an eyebrow. “What are they pumping into you? Hook me up.”
“Keep it down,” Jason muttered, nodding toward the curtain dividing the room. “There’s someone else here.”
“Get some rest,” Todd said, brushing her hair back. “We’ll come back tomorrow when whatever they gave you wears off.”
They kissed her forehead and left. Dahlia drifted back to sleep, dreaming of running, the hunter’s gunshot echoing. She jerked awake, scanning the room.
The man in the next bed was talking softly to someone on the phone. He caught her looking and smiled.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to wake you,”
“You didn’t,” Dahlia replied, her eyes landing on his bandaged foot.
“This?” He chuckled. “Snowboarding accident. Third time.
I’m Lupin, by the way.”
“Dahlia,” she said, smiling back. She tried to sit up, but pain shot through her left arm, and she let out a sharp gasp.
“Damn it,” Lupin muttered under his breath. “Call the nurse if you need more meds.”
“No, I’m good,” Dahlia said. “I was just… never mind.” His eyes were a pale blue-gray, just like the man in her dream. Okay, I’m officially losing it, she thought.
Todd walked in, holding a cup of coffee. “Morning, Sleeping Beauty. They’re releasing you in a week. You know what, Jason? Let’s move here. I’m digging this place.”
“You’ve been complaining about the cold since we got here,” Jason said, rolling his eyes.
Dahlia laughed. Lupin tried to keep his composure, but he couldn’t help glancing at her.
Does she know what she is?
Jason went white. Before he could say a word, Bram shot to his feet."Out. Now. I need to check her bones," Bram barked, waving everyone off."Did you see his face, Bram?" she murmured. He froze. "What are you doing?""Being your damn doctor," he muttered, his hands moving to her upper thigh. Her eyes flickered with light, and Bram caught it."Alright, legs seem fine. Arm," he ordered, then shifted to the other one. When his hands brushed her face, her fingers gripped his arm. "Bram, why did they do this to me?""You’re not going back to work," he said firmly."You don’t get to decide that!" she yelled."I’m not losing you again," he snapped back, his eyes flashing a dark yellow.Dahlia stiffened. Todd and Jason stepped in."What’s with the yelling?" Todd asked, glancing around. Bram stormed out, clearly pissed."Girl, you really set him off," Todd said, shaking his head. She brushed him off. "Jason, I asked you a question.""Yeah, we did, Dahlia," Jason admitted."So, you’re wolves?"
Mr. Mel's gaze settled on Dahlia. "Can you explain what happened?"She glanced at Jane before answering. "I suffered burns from spilled coffee, but I'm here and prepared for the presentation."Mr. Mel turned to Jane. "And your contribution to the project?""She stayed home and wouldn't share her files," Jane muttered."Can you blame her?" Mr. Mel's patience thinned. "I'm still waiting for your answer."The silence stretched uncomfortably."Out," he finally snapped. "You'll receive no credit for this work."The screen flickered to life, revealing the director of G&R Inc."Mr. Berg," Mr. Mel greeted, "we're ready for the preliminary presentation. Dahlia?""Hello, Mr. Berg." Dahlia displayed her sketches of wolf heads designed for the gear. "The snowboards feature silver and black wolves, with customizable color options.""Perfect," the director nodded. "Show me the commercial concepts."She presented scenes of a silver wolf racing alongside a skier, a black wolf with a snowboarder, and
Todd had transformed the dining room with his usual flair, candles flickered between artfully arranged place settings, and the scent of rosemary hung in the air.Bram froze in the doorway. "This looks like something out of a magazine.""Shoes," Todd said, pointing to Bram's feet with a stern expression.Dahlia emerged from the kitchen and wrapped Bram in a warm embrace. "How are you feeling?" he whispered against her hair."Much better," she replied. "Are you checking as my physician or my…""As your protector." They shared a laugh that eased the tension. The doorbell chimed, and Jason arrived. Dahlia greeted him with the same enthusiasm.Once seated around the table, Jason dipped his spoon into his soup. "So what exactly happened today?""She sampled the Mr. giant" Todd said with a smile."Todd!" Dahlia and Jason exclaimed in unison.Todd shrugged. "We're all grown-ups here."Bram shifted uncomfortably."It was just coffee on my clothes," Dahlia explained."I'd rather focus on my pro
His lips brushed her skin like whispers, and his hands wandered with a tenderness that made her head spin. Bram leaned over her, his kisses trailing down as he pressed into her, drawing a sharp gasp from her lips.He slowed, his mouth finding her breast while his hand traced the curve of her side. Her moans grew louder as he quickened his pace, her body trembling beneath him.Her breath hitched against his lips as he kissed her, still deep inside. With a swift motion, he flipped her on top of him, guiding her movements as she rocked slowly.Bram silenced her cries with his mouth, then trailed lower, his hands gripping her hips as she arched into him. Together they unraveled, his arms tight around her waist, pulling her close as they both came undone. She lay motionless beside him."Dahlia," Bram whispered, "look at me." When her eyes finally met his, he gently rolled her onto her back."I'm fine, Bram," she murmured."What happened at work today?"She traced a finger along his collarb
Dahlia approached Mr. Mel's desk. "Could I be assigned to someone else, please?""Jane needs to learn her lesson, and you've become valuable to me. I'll mention your promotion at the executive meeting. They're bound to hire you soon."Jane crossed her arms. "I refuse to take orders from an intern.""Then pack your things," Mr. Mel said coldly. "Consider yourself lucky I'm not firing you outright."Dahlia stuffed her belongings into her backpack and hurried toward the elevator. Inside, Flora and Jane stepped in behind her. As the doors sealed them in, Jane grabbed a fistful of Dahlia's hair. Dahlia's palm connected with Jane's cheek in a sharp slap."Don't touch me!" Dahlia's voice echoed in the small space. Flora snickered."We'll make you regret this," she whispered as the doors opened and other employees entered. At lobby floor, Dahlia bolted, not stopping until she reached home.Inside, she hurled her backpack onto the couch and released a primal scream, burying her face in a pillo
Bram verified all the cameras through his phone app. Everything functioned properly, even the doorway security.Dahlia shuffled into the living room in flannel pajamas. "I'll make some tea. Thanks for setting everything up.""There's food in the fridge, and coffee..." His words cut short as she wrapped her arms around him."Actually, I'm exhausted. Forget the tea." She trudged toward the bedroom and collapsed into sleep almost instantly.Later, Bram crept in and pulled the blanket over her. *Watching her sleep like some stalker*, he thought before retreating to his own bed. When morning came, Dahlia groaned at the alarm's intrusion, smacked it silent, and drifted back to sleep."Dahlia, up! Coffee's ready," he called from the kitchen. She stumbled in with tangled hair and half-lidded eyes, slumping onto a barstool. He handed her a steaming mug, suppressing a smile. She caught his expression. "What?""Just remembering you've never been a morning person," he chuckled. After sipping her
