MIA

I don’t know how long we stayed in that position, but by the time my tears were drying up, it’s already dark out. I sniffle and look up, only to see Aaron looking at me tenderly. “I’m sorry,” I mumble. I try to climb off his lap, but he holds on to me. He slowly rubs my back in circles.

“Are you okay?” he asks, and I nod.

“I was just overwhelmed,” I say. He moves the hair in my face, and I cringe at how disgusting I must look. “Don’t look at me for long. I look hideous.” Aaron just chuckles instead.

“I promise I don’t normally look like this at work,” I argue, and he nods.

“I believe you.”

“I’m serious,” I pout, and he smiles. A genuine smile. I lean back a little and take a mental screenshot of his face. This is a rare sight. A rare moment of Aaron smiling genuinely.

The air inside the car suddenly changes, and I realize how close we are. Me on his lap and our faces inches apart. “Kitten, one more time, and I’ll lose it,” he whispers against my mouth. I let out a shaky breath

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Cost Of Truth

MIAIt’s official. I’m a fish out of water. Since I was escorted to this large room in the restaurant with a huge table in the middle, I’ve just been looking out of place. The room is dimly lit and very private, like somewhere important decisions are being made. Probably why it was given to Aaron.Someone knocks softly on the door and enters. A line of waiters floods in with different trays, and my jaw touches the floor. They dish it out and now a little before leaving. Am I supposed to eat all these? I’m about to consider my options. What if this is a trick and there are cameras set up somewhere to watch me? Or I’m just in the wrong place. I decide to wait a little.I pick up my phone to text Aaron, and surprisingly, his text comes in first. “Eat, I’ll be there shortly.” That is all the confirmation I need. I slowly uncover the dishes and pick up a spoon. If there’s a camera here and someone’s watching, then it’s on them now.***I can’t breathe. I can’t feel my stomach anymore. What

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    A Change Of Scenery

MIAI need to tell Aaron immediately. But first, I have to survive the day with a poker face and think of something to tell Mr. Wilson concerning the intel I was supposed to get. I'll just tell him I’m still investigating or working on something. I sit back down at my desk and attempt to concoct a plausible excuse. The door swings open, and Mr. Wilson bounces in, humming a tune with his coffee in his hands. It makes me realize I totally forgot about getting his coffee. “Good morning, Mia,” he greets me. By my name!! It is either I am losing my mind, or Mr. Wilson has finally lost it. The chances of me being the insane one are actually higher. For someone who supposedly got chewed out, he seems at peace.“G..good morning?” I reply. “A politician will soon be arraigned for embezzlement, so we have to work on an article immediately,” he says, and I furrow my eyebrows in confusion. “What about...?” I thought it was Aaron or nothing.Mr. Wilson shakes his head. “Apparently, we can’t u

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    Unraveling secrets

MIAMy eyes dart towards Aaron, and the question leaves my mouth before I stop myself. “Did you know Larry Paulman?” “I was wondering when you’d ask,” he says.He knows…“How... how did you...?” I stutter. At what point did he find out? Does he only know because I got to read that deleted article, or does he know I got to Larry’s house yesterday?“I know you’re not dumb enough to just delete an article just because you were told to without reading it.” He says without looking up from his tablet. I let out a subtle breath of relief. Thank goodness. “And Drew isn’t really bodyguard material, so I had someone follow you.”That’s it. I choke on my sandwich immediately. I start coughing uncontrollably, and the man across from me barely looks up before sipping his coffee.Stella rushes into the room and hands me a glass of water. I thank her and take slow breaths while drinking from the glass. After a few minutes of recovering, I clear my throat and sit back upright. Why am I nervous? It’s

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Weight Of His Gaze

MIAAs I walk back into the house, I consider tiptoeing, but this isn’t my home in Texas, where my mom would be waiting for me to begin her rants. Drew and I had dinner before he eventually called Bobby to drop me off at the mansion. I can still feel the thrill from the whole night, and I almost wish it didn’t have to end.I stop in my tracks when I sense a brooding presence at the top of the stairs. Aaron is standing by the stairs, looking down at me. My heart drops immediately. “Where have you been?” he asks, his voice stone-cold, and I almost feel my knees buckle in fear. Why am I so scared? I’m an adult, not a middle schooler.“At a small event. With Drew,” I emphasize the last part in case he thinks I casually went off on my own. “And Bobby brought me back,” I add.“So you spent all evening with Drew at some crappy story contest,” he says, his words dripping with disdain. With every word, I feel a bucket of ice water drenched on me. He walks down the stairs slowly, his eyes never

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Investigation Begins

MIAI watch as Lily brings out a bunch of documents relating to Larry's work history. I start to look through the papers, and for some reason, all his previous work history ended abruptly, and the companies he worked for either shut down or went bankrupt."Here you go," Lily says, and I look up to see the burner phone she talked about earlier. "I... Can I have it?" I ask in shock. She is literally handing me the one link her husband had with his potential killer."What about the police?""Well, if it isn't obvious that nobody cares about my husband, then this should prove it," she says with a chuckle that doesn't seem genuine. "You're the only one who has shown interest at all." My heart sinks at every word she says. What has the world come to?"I'll try my best to solve this whole thing.""Be careful, dear," she says with a solemn smile on her face.I'm about to delve into the papers when my phone rings. It's Drew. I check the time, and it's almost 5 pm."Hey, where are you? Bobby s
