The morning sun, already high and harsh, presses down on the back of my neck. The Lombardi family estate stretches around us, an empire of manicured lawns, ancient oaks, and gleaming white marble. This particular golf course, a private indulgence designed by my grandfather himself, is his sanctuary, his arena. And today, I decided to join him there.

He watches me, a monolithic figure even seated in his custom-built power wheelchair, its sleek, dark frame a stark contrast to the verdant green. Grandfather washes me closely. His eyes track my every move, every subtle shift of my weight as I set up my shot.

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    Undeniable Chemistry

AARONThe mere sight of her, the reality of Mia being here, is a drug I didn’t realize I desperately needed. My chest aches with a tenderness I rarely allow myself to feel, a vulnerability that only she can conjure. The stress of the mafia, the business all fades to a distant echo as I watch her.She looks at me, her eyes, those pools of warm chocolate, mirroring a yearning I instantly recognize. A soft smile plays on her lips, tentative, yet so profoundly intimate. I don't wait another second. I close the distance between us, my arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against me. The contact is an immediate release, a sigh of relief I didn't even know I was holding in. Her body fits against mine as if it were always meant to be there, a perfect puzzle piece sliding into place. My fingers splay against the small of her back, pressing her closer still, inhaling the soft, sweet scent of her, a mix of vanilla and something uniquely Mia. The tension that’s been coiling in my sho

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    Sanctuary

MIAThe day is a blur of hushed whispers and shocking revelations. My real father might just be alive out there somewhere with all the crimes he committed.I stumble out of the building, the afternoon sun a harsh glare against my already strained vision. My phone is clutched in my hand. My apartment feels like the last place I want to be. My thumb hovers over Aaron’s number, but I don’t call. Instead, I flag down the first available taxi. The yellow car lurches to a stop beside me, and I slide into the back seat, the worn fabric doing little to soothe my agitation."Where to, miss?" the driver asks, his voice gruff but kind. For a moment, I hesitate, the address of my small city apartment hovering on my tongue. But then, another address, a place that represents safety and a different kind of homecoming, spills out instead. I say the words a quiet plea to the universe. It’s Aaron’s house. It’s where I need to be.The ride is mercifully uneventful, a blur of city streets and distant cha

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    A Legacy of Secrets

MIAI push my chair back from my desk. My back is still from sitting at a spot for hours. All I can focus on for days was the revelation of my father’s identity; a killer. A police officer. And his wife. The brutality of it sends a chill through me that has nothing to do with the office’s cold temperature and Wilson’s plans to freeze the both of us to death . My father. A killer. The word echoes in the back of my mind, loud and persistent.Every day since, I’ve been meticulously, obsessively, going through the cold cases in our archive. Lasers has a number of reports concerning the murder but it just isn’t enough. I’ve spent countless hours going through the reports over and over again. Even Mr Wilson is shocked at the amount of time Ive dedicated into it. Thankfully he never really asked the reason. But finding the overall details of Liam Conall’s criminal life isn’t enough. I need specifics. I need to understand that particular crime, the one that stained my father’s name with inno

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Art of Negotiation

AARONPapers detailing Randall’s recent drug operations are spread out before me, a chaotic collection of intelligence reports, financial ledgers, and intercepted communications. My gaze sweeps over the data, searching for the crack, the sign of desperation that explains why a man like Randall suddenly wants to work with the mafia. More specifically, why he wants to dance with me.It doesn’t sit right. It never has. Randall Blackwood operates in the dark, a ghost in the shadows of the illicit drug trade. He builds his empire on secrecy, on avoiding the big players, the structured chaos of established crime families. So, this sudden overture, this attempt to align himself with one of the most powerful organizations, smells like a rat in a sewer. He’s either plotting something, or incredibly desperate. My money's always on desperation when it comes to men like Randall. They don’t change their stripes without a damn good reason.I lean back in my leather chair. My fingers drum on the des

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Weight Of Memories

NATALIEThen, there it is. A name, buried deep within a declassified file I shouldn’t even have access to. A name that’s been ringing in my head over and over for days. Liam Conall. The document details a massive federal drug trafficking investigation. My father, a man I remember only in broken memories, is listed as the chief investigating officer. And the target? The Ash Mafia. My breath hitches. My eyes scan further, consuming every word. The case was on the brink of a breakthrough, a mole within the organization ready to turn state’s evidence, when suddenly, the entire task force was compromised. The mole disappeared. The lead officers, including my father, were pulled from the case. And weeks later, my parents were gone. Two simple gunshots, the official report had claimed, a tragic event that left a gaping, unfilled hole in my six-year-old world. It wasn’t just a random murder but a planned one. My father, the chief officer on a case against the Ash mafia, specifically a drug c
