Chapter 5: Obvious & Questions

-

"Daniel was an old friend, I recently found out he was met by an accident, he's in the hospital fighting for his life but the doctors say there's is a fifty percent chance he'll live." He gave her a look of pity as they walked along the stone path.

"I'm sor-" She shook her head stopping him, knowing the words that were about to leave him all too well.

"Don't apologize, it's fine but why are you so interested in Daniel?" She inquired raising her sharp brow slightly.

"My father-in-law, William, is hiding something from me and when I asked him who Daniel was he tried to avoid the topic."

"He did tell me not to say anything to you-" Darius was ready to protest but she stopped him. "But I don't like to listen, so ask me anything."

"What did Daniel do for a living?"

"His family, the Atwoods are notorious for their jewellery business, I'm a fan of their jewellery myself, each is unique, this one was made specially for me." She states her hand touching the emerald necklace around her neck that complimented her skin as her dress did.

"It's beautiful." She smiles as they stepped into the garden maze, her eyes searched the area for anyone, she relaxed when she didn't see nor hear anyone.

"Daniel made it, he spent weeks on it." She told him as they walked deeper into the garden maze.

"He seems like a good friend." She nods, a smile appeared on her face as memories of them together came rushing back, she forced herself not the cry.

"He's a good man."

"What's your name? I should have asked earlier." He asked feeling it was a little weird for him not to be on a first name basis with the person who was answering questions about her friend.

"Emerald." He chuckles at the irony.

"So he did on purpose?" Emerald nods taking a seat on the stone bench, he did the same looking at the flowers around them.

"Everything he did had a purpose. Do you have any more questions?"

"Did he have any siblings?" She paused for a second as if she realized something but she shrugged to his question, his lips pursed knowing she was lying.

"Not that I know of, we should head back to the party wouldn't want to worry your wife." He nodded pretending to agree as he knew Amoy didn't mind his absence.

They walked back into the mansion going their separate ways, William immediately walked over to him. "What did she say to you?"

"She just told me a few things about Daniel." A look of worry flashed across his face. "Don't worry she didn't tell me much, just that he was in an accident, he was a part of the Atwood family-" Darius cut himself off as he saw William get more nervous at the mention of Atwood, he finished his glass of champagne making Darius more curious than before.

"What was that?" His father-in-law raised a brow.

"What?"

"You got nervous at the mention of Atwood, what are you not telling me?"

"Darius, I'm not keeping anything from you, seems like Emerald has gotten into your head, don't overthink it, son." William walked off going towards Emerald whispering something to her, soon they went outside.

"That's the second time someone I know left with that woman, who is she?" Amoy asked appearing at his side.

"No one you should be worrying about, how many deals do you have now?" She didn't look convinced but didn't ask further questions.

"16, I-" Before she could continue her grandmother spoke, everyone turned to the stairs where she stood with a mic.

"Hello everyone, I would like to thank you all for coming to this event, all the money you donate will be going to charity, again thank you all for coming enjoy your night and have fun." They all clapped going back to their conversations.

-

The party went by rather quickly, as everyone began leaving, Darius watched as Emerald took her jacket from the maid Emerald met Darius's gaze sending him a smile before leaving out the door.

He knew that he wouldn't be seeing her for a while so he was ready to follow her to ask for her number or something as he still had more questions for her but before he could go after her, he was stopped by the same maid that had given Emerald her jacket.

"Sir, Ms Green told me to give this to you." The man handed him a piece of paper before leaving him, Darius opened it reading it, seeing it was her number, he smiled happily.

"I see you found yourself a girlfriend," Amoy whispered from behind him, he turned her way storing the paper in his pocket.

"Friend, not a girlfriend." He corrected her, she shrugged.

"I could care less, I'm heading upstairs grandmother is asking you to clean up since the other maids got a day off today." He sighed watching Amoy walking towards the stairs but didn't go up them as she went another way, he had an idea of where she went and who she went to see.

"Do you need help?" William asked walking from a group of people he was talking to, Darius gave him a confused looked wondering what he meant.

"I'm asking if you need help to clean up? I overheard my mother telling Amoy to tell you to clean up." Darius shook his head, glancing at Amoy's grandmother who was glaring at him.

"I'll be fine, go enjoy your night."

-

Amoy leaned up in the car seat, changing back into her clothes, "Do you have to go so soon?" Zane asked softly his eyes watching her every move.

"Yes I do, we can't have anyone knowing about this." She reminded him, slipping back into her dress.

"By anyone you mean your grandmother." She nodded, taking her heels from the front seat, putting them on. "I don't get why you let her put you down." She took out her mirror from her purse fixing her hair and makeup.

"It doesn't matter if you understand or not, I know I'm doing this for a good cause and that's what's making me tolerate the insults," Amoy told him, facing him, she placed a quick kiss on his lips. "I'll see you around." Before he could say anything she exited the car walking back to the house but going to the back door, not wanting to be seen.

She was a little startled when she saw her sister, Trinity outside smoking a cigar, Amoy kept a poker face, sending her a tight-lipped smile moving towards the door, only she was stopped.

"What are you doing out so late, Amoy?" Trinity questioned her sister.

"I went for a walk to get some fresh air, I think I've had enough. So I'll be going inside now, excuse me, do have a good night, sister." Before Amoy could leave Trinity stopped her again.

"I know what you were doing." Amoy raised her eyebrow acting as if she didn't have a clue about what Trinity was saying.

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Her sister scanned her face almost forgetting how good of a liar Amoy was.

"You're still such a good liar, that may come in handy when I tell grandmother what I saw." Instead of panicking like Trinity wanted Amoy smiled.

"I'm still confused about what you thought you saw, again good night." This time Trinity let her pass before entered the house she turned back to her sister. "Smoking is bad for the lungs."

-

Darius scrubbed the last dish, relief filling him as he would finally be done with cleaning, he couldn't wait to take a shower and get some sleep.

The sound of the backdoor opening caught his attention, he had remembered seeing Trinity going that way, only instead of it being Trinity who came to sight, Amoy did, her eyes met his.

"You're still cleaning?" She asked, he gave her a look of amusement as it was very clear what he was doing.

"Why do you love asking obvious questions?" He asked she chuckled lightly, opening the fridge taking out a bottle of water.

"Do you want one?" He nodded putting the last plate away as she handed him a bottle of water, which he gladly drank.

"I hope my grandmother didn't give you any trouble while I was gone." He smiled realising Amoy was deciding to be friendly tonight.

"She was so kind." Amoy grinned knowing he was being sarcastic.

"Really? Is that so?" He nods moving out of the kitchen she followed him turning off the lights behind them.

"Yes, she even complimented me, I believe her words were 'You are an incompetent fool'"

"She sounds like a delight."
