DANGEROUS OPPORTUNITY

I flag down the first taxi that slows, practically waving it to a stop. The moment the doors shut behind me, I collapse slightly into the seat, letting the hum of the engine pull me into a shaky rhythm.

My thoughts spiral uncontrollably, looping back to that day with Mia, how she’d been scrolling through her phone, animated, talking endlessly about a luxurious royal wedding she’d spotted online.

I shiver at the memory, pressing my palm against my forehead as a dull headache spreads across my temples.

I lean against the window, letting the cool breeze brush across my face. It does little to calm the storm inside me.

The taxi glides through familiar streets, and for a brief moment, I let myself sink into silence, counting each passing lamppost, trying to piece together what comes next.

When we finally pull up at the apartment, I hand the driver the fare, avoiding his eyes, and push open the door, eager to tell my best friend everything I discovered.

I step inside, scanning the living room. It’s empty. Silence greets me. My stomach twists with curiosity and a little irritation, Mia isn’t lounging with her laptop or her books, nowhere in sight. Shrugging, I head toward her room.

I freeze at the doorway.

There she is, sprawled across her bed, completely absorbed, hands moving, eyes half-closed… using a vibrator.

“Fuck, girl! Seriously?!” I blurt, and she jerks upright, flushing scarlet, eyes wide with shock.

“Shit! I didn’t know you were back!” she yells, scrambling to cover herself with the blanket.

I shake my head, half in disbelief, half in amusement. “Wash yourself up before you join me in the sitting room!” I snap, stepping back with a sigh.

Mia groans, shoving the blanket around her, mumbling excuses, but I don’t wait to listen. I turn and stride past her, letting the door click shut behind me.

I collapse onto the couch, the cushions swallowing me in their familiarity. The hum of the city outside mingles with my thoughts, reminding me of everything I have to deal with now, everything I’m too scared to face.

And yet, for a brief second, just sitting here, I allow myself to breathe.

I sit on the couch, trying to make sense of the chaos in my head. Mia eventually emerges from her room, wrapped in a towel, still flustered.

“You’re overreacting,” she mutters, shaking her head. “I didn’t hear you come in.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Overreacting? Girl, you saw with eyes doing… that… on your bed!”

She groans dramatically. “I was—fine, fine! Don’t look at me like that.”

I can’t help but smirk, despite everything. For a moment, the tension eases, though just slightly.

Mia flops beside me, pulling her phone from her bag. “So, what’s going on? You’ve been out all day, acting like someone stole your brain.”

I glance at her, debating how much to reveal. “I… saw something. On the news, or online… about a royal wedding.”

Her eyes light up. “Oh! I told you about that! You didn’t see it yet?”

I nod grimly, my stomach twisting. “I saw him. The man from that night. He’s the groom. And—” I stop, my voice barely above a whisper.

Mia freezes. Her jaw drops. “Wait… what?”

I fold my arms across my stomach, my mind spinning faster than ever. “Yes. His child. And he’s… married.”

The color drains from her face. “You mean… the king?”

I bite my lip. “Yes. The king.”

For a moment, neither of us speaks. Then Mia leans back, fanning her face dramatically. “Oh… girl. Fuck. This is… this is huge. Like… life-shattering huge.”

I bury my face in my hands. “I don’t even know where to start.”

Mia shoots up from the couch so fast I flinch. Her towel nearly slips, but she grabs it and squeals like someone just handed her a lifetime supply of diamonds.

I blink at her, stunned. “Why the hell are you excited? I’m literally in doom.”

She spins toward me, eyes blazing with pure madness and joy. “Mel, are you serious right now? This is the BEST news ever!” She clasps her hands under her chin dramatically.

"My best friend is pregnant… for a king. A whole king. And possibly carrying the future heir to the throne!”

I stare at her, unamused. “Mia, be serious. I’m in trouble. Big trouble. How am I supposed to walk up to a king—A KING—and tell him I’m pregnant with his child?” My voice cracks.

I fold my arms tightly across my chest. “I checked social media already. His name is King Adrian Athenora. Married. To some princess from another royal line. And me? I’m… nobody. A poor girl who works shifts to survive.”

Mia’s excitement slows, settling into something calmer… sharper. She drops back onto the couch as if an idea just snapped into place inside her head. Her expression shifts from overjoyed friend to calculating genius in half a second.

“What now?” I ask cautiously.

She leans forward. “Mel… listen. Your brother called you two days ago, remember? Your dad’s health is getting worse.

And what did you do? You sent every single thing you earned from the hotel. You’ve been breaking your back with those shifts, saving whatever you can.”

I swallow, looking down. The memory stings.

She continues, “You need money. Not pocket change, real money. Life-saving money. And you can’t keep doing these little jobs. You need help. And this…” She points at my stomach. “This is not a curse. This is your opportunity.”

I blink. “Are you hearing yourself?”

“Yes.” She grips my shoulders. “And you need to hear me. You didn’t trap anyone. You didn’t plan anything. This happened. And guess what? Kings don’t just walk around having secret babies.

If he got you pregnant, then he has responsibilities. A royal bloodline isn’t something they ignore.”

“Mia—”

“No, let me finish,” she cuts in, eyes blazing. “You are carrying a royal child. And whether he’s married or not, he needs to know. He can’t bury that. And you? You need support. Emotional, medical, and financial.”

I shake my head, overwhelmed. “But how do I even reach him? He’s surrounded by security, by royals, by protocol. You can’t just knock on a palace door.”

Mia smirks like she’s been waiting for that question.

“That,” she says proudly, “is where my idea comes in.”

I narrow my eyes. “I’m afraid to ask.”

CHAPTER NINETY EIGHT "As much as I hate to tell you this,” I whisper, my voice barely steady, “your lives are in danger. And I want to keep you all safe.” The room feels smaller. Then my father speaks—soft, but already certain. “They are coming for my grandson, aren’t they?” “Yes,” I say, the word heavy. I hear him inhale, then exhale slowly. It’s the sound he makes when he’s trying not to break. “And if you’re protecting all of us,” he asks, quietly, carefully, “who is protecting you?” The question hits deeper than any threat ever could. Silence stretches between us. The rocking chair creaks beneath me. Zaiden shifts against me, his tiny fingers curling into my shirt, warm and trusting. I stare at him, then close my eyes. I hadn’t thought about myself. Not once. I swallow and force a small laugh, a thin shield over fear. “Well, Dad… remember when I was seven, and Grandma was playing cards?” I say. “She told me I had a long life span. We were just playing, b

  • THE KING’S UNWANTED BABY MAMA    Chapter ninety seven

CHAPTER NINETY SEVEN "Of course. I’ll keep you updated,” he says. I nod once, then walk out of his office like I’ve just signed a declaration of war. The taxi ride home feels calm. The city glows outside the window—cafés, laughter, normal lives but none of it feels like my life. My world has narrowed to survival. When I step into the apartment, Nina looks up from the couch. “You’re home early.” Her eyes narrow, scanning me for injuries. “What happened? Are you okay?” “What about Zaiden?” I ask, dropping onto the couch, exhaustion settling into my bones. “He’s napping. Peacefully.” She moves closer. “Mel, are you okay?” I lean back, staring at the ceiling. “Let’s say I’m… awakened.” She frowns. “Awakened to what?” “There are rumors. They’re spreading fast. My past is resurfacing at work.” My jaw tightens. “The hunt is on again.” Her lips press into a thin line. “That’s not good. So what do we do? Move again? Disappear?” I shake my head slowly. “No. Running i

  • THE KING’S UNWANTED BABY MAMA    Chapter ninety six

CHAPTER NINETY SIX I flag down a taxi and give him Mr. Dave’s address, my voice steady even as my mind races. Inside, my thoughts won’t slow. I need to go about all this the right way and make sure I’m claiming my hotel by getting the public on my side. My image has already been dragged through filth and lies. Power revealed too early is power wasted, and if I’m going to fight this war and win, I have to be smart, strategic and ruthless.” And I need to protect my family. They are the only leverage my enemies can use to tame me but I won’t give them that opportunity. I map moves in my head—legal angles, quiet allies, exits, leverage. By the time the taxi slows, the panic has been buried beneath resolve. “We’re here,” the driver says. I pay, step out, and instinct takes over. My eyes sweep the street. Parked cars. Reflections in windows. Lingering figures. Nothing screams danger—but danger doesn’t always announce itself anymore. Does it ? Only when I’m satisfied do

  • THE KING’S UNWANTED BABY MAMA    Chapter ninety five

CHAPTER NINETY FIVE You all have finally won, I think bitterly. You’ve dragged the cruel Melissa out of hiding. And now I’m going to play dirty with all of you and I won’t hold back, never again. I turn toward the door, my fingers already grazing the handle when Jake’s voice cuts through the room, sharp and threatening. “If you walk out that door,” he says coldly, “say goodbye to your job. And remember how much you need it.” I stop. For a heartbeat, the air holds its breath. Then I turn back. I look at him—really look at him and something in me settles. Calm, unapologetic, and mean. “We’ll see who gets to keep a job,” I say, a slow smile curving my lips. And I walk out. I don’t bother closing the door behind me. The hallway feels different now. Quiet and unwelcoming. Whispers ripple as I pass, hushed voices colliding with the sound of my footsteps. Eyes follow me—some curious, some satisfied, some cruel. I keep my head high, even as something inside me shre

  • THE KING’S UNWANTED BABY MAMA    Chapter ninety four

CHAPTER NINETY FOUR It’s a new day and a new week. I step into the hotel and feel it instantly. The air shifts strangely. Eyes follow me as I walk past the lobby. Conversations dip. Smiles stiffen. A few people look away too quickly, like they’ve been caught staring. Strange. Maybe I just look exceptionally good today, I think dryly. I keep walking. At the elevator, I press the button and step inside just as two staff members rush toward it. They’re almost in—until they see me. They stop. Exchange a look. And instead of stepping in, they stay back, watching as the doors slide shut in front of them. Okay… that’s weird. Very weird. My reflection stares back at me in the elevator, nothing out of order. Is there something on my clothes? A stain? A tear? Something I missed? The elevator dings. I step out, unease settling in my stomach. No. Something is off. I quicken my pace toward the staff room. Whatever this is, I need to see it for myself—befo

  • THE KING’S UNWANTED BABY MAMA    Chapter ninety three

CHAPTER NIGHTY THREE MELISSA’S POV I pay off the taxi, juggling ice cream cup and a small bag of snacks as we step inside. “A perfect day for a tiny ice-cream date,” Nina says, nudging the door shut with her foot. I smile. “I’m just going to finish mine before I start prepping dinner.” Zaiden immediately declares war on my hand, his tiny fingers reaching, grabbing, and demanding my ice cream cone. “Easy, baby bear,” I laugh. “Just a little taste—” The doorbell rings. Nina and I freeze at the exact same time. “…Did we forget something in the taxi?” I ask, scanning the room like an answer might appear on the wall. The bell rings again. Longer and Insistent. Nina moves first. She walks to the door, peeks through the peephole—then turns back to me, her face drained of color. “Who is it?” I whisper. Instead of answering, she opens the door. And the air in the room changes. My eyes lift. Frederick. He stands there like a memory that refuses to stay buried—b
