Two different smiles.

Three weeks.

That was how long Lily had been living in the packhouse.

Long enough for the servants to learn exactly how much honey she liked in her tea.

Long enough for the healers to memorize her daily routine.

Long enough for the sound of her laughter to become as familiar as my own.

Sometimes, I wondered if she had always belonged here.

The thought made me hate myself.

***********

The morning began quietly.

Kael had left before sunrise to inspect the eastern patrols after reports of rogue wolves crossing the borders.

Before leaving, he pressed a lingering kiss against my forehead.

“I’ll return before dinner.”

“I’ll be waiting.” I whispered.

He smiled. “I know.”

For a moment, it felt like nothing had changed.

Then he walked away.

By midmorning, one of the maids approached me while I reviewed the week’s supply records.

“My Luna?”

I looked up. “Yes?”

“Miss Lily hasn’t eaten since breakfast.”

I frowned. “Has the healer seen her?”

“Yes.” She replied

“And?” My brows furrowed.

“He says the pregnancy is progressing well.”

Relief washed over me. “Then why hasn’t she eaten?”

The maid hesitated. “She says she has no appetite.”

I closed the ledger in front of me.

“I’ll speak with her.”

The maid looked surprised.

“I’ll prepare some broth.” I smiled.

********

Lily’s chamber smelled faintly of lavender.

Sunlight poured through the open windows, dancing across the wooden floor.

She was sitting beside the fireplace with a book resting on her lap.

The moment she saw me, she brightened.

“Luna.”

“I heard you haven’t been eating.” I said, walking into the room.

She smiled apologetically. “I wasn’t feeling very well.”

I placed the tray on the table.

“The cooks made chicken broth.”

“You shouldn’t have troubled yourself.” She forced a smile.

“It wasn’t trouble.” I waved the statement off.

I sat across from her. “The baby needs you to eat.”

A gentle smile spread across her lips.“You sound just like Alpha Kael.”

The words caught me off guard.

“He worries so much. He hardly slept last night.” She yawned.

My fingers tightened slightly around my teacup.

“He stayed with me until the sickness passed.” She looked down shyly. “I kept telling him to go back to you.”

There it was. The first crack in her perfect mask.

“So thoughtful of you,” I replied calmly.

She looked back at me. “I do try.”

Before I could answer, there was a knock at the door.

A young servant entered carrying fresh towels.

“Miss Lily, the healer asked that these be changed.”

“Thank you.” Lily’s smile returned to its usual sweetness.

The servant bowed before leaving.

The moment the door closed…Her entire expression changed.

The warmth vanished.

“So…” She leaned back comfortably.

“Did Alpha come to you after he left my room?”

I looked at her. “What?”

“The night of your heat I mean.” She smirked.

My heartbeat slowed.

“I wondered if he eventually returned.” Her voice was light and almost conversational.

“You know he didn’t.” I said calmly.

She smiled. “I almost felt guilty.”

“You should.” The words escaped before I could stop them.

For the first time…Lily laughed.

Not politely, or even shyly. It was a soft, amused laugh.

“You really are kind.”

“I don’t understand.” I folded my arms on my breasts. “You still believe this is about kindness?”

She placed one hand over her stomach.?“It stopped being about kindness the moment this child was conceived.”

I stood. “I won’t listen to this.”

“Oh, but you should.” She looked directly into my eyes. “Because I’m the future now.”

My wolf growled.

“You are carrying an heir.” I forced myself to remain calm. “That doesn’t make you Luna. You’re just a breeder.

“No.” She smiled. “It doesn’t, but soon enough.”

A sharp knock interrupted us.

Instantly…Everything changed. Lily’s eyes widened.

The smile disappeared. She looked almost frightened.

“Come in.”

The healer entered first, followed by two servants.

“My dear,” the healer said warmly.

“How are you feeling?”

Lily smiled gratefully. “Much better.”

She looked toward me.

“I was just thanking the Luna for bringing me food.”

The servants smiled. “Our Luna is too kind.”

I returned the smile automatically.

Inside…I felt nothing.

***********

As I stepped into the corridor, I heard hurried footsteps behind me.

“My Luna!”

It was Clara, one of the younger kitchen maids.

She stopped in front of me, breathing heavily.

“I’ve been looking everywhere.”

“What happened?” I asked.

“The head cook wanted to know if you approved tomorrow’s dinner menu.” She announced.

“I’ll come now.” I got up swiftly.

She smiled brightly. “I’m so glad.”

As we walked toward the kitchens, Clara spoke without thinking.

“Miss Lily said roasted pheasant makes her nauseous.”

“I see.” I scoffed.

“So we’re changing the entire banquet.”

I nodded. “That seems reasonable.”

Clara continued chatting happily. “I’ve never seen everyone so excited about a baby before.”

“I suppose not.” I frowned.

“The little Alpha is already so loved.” She squealed.

Little Alpha, not little pup or little child.

Little Alpha.

The words echoed inside my mind.

By the time we reached the kitchens, I realized Clara had been talking the entire way.

I hadn’t heard another word.

That evening, Kael returned later than expected.

He looked exhausted.

The moment he entered our chamber, I helped him remove his cloak.

“Long day?”

He sighed. “Longer than expected.”

I handed him a cup of warm tea.

“How are the eastern borders?”

“Quiet.” He smiled tiredly “Thankfully.”

For a while, we simply enjoyed each other’s company.

It reminded me of the life we’d lived peacefully.

  • THE LUNA’S CROWN   Happy anniversary

I woke with a smile. For one brief, blissful moment, I forgot everything. The storm, the empty bed, and the ache that had settled inside my heart.I reached across the mattress, expecting to feel the familiar warmth of Kael’s body.My fingers met nothing but cold sheets. The smile slowly faded from my lips.He hadn’t come back, not even after the storm had passed.I closed my eyes for a moment, willing the disappointment away.Perhaps he had fallen asleep in Lily’s room after calming her. Perhaps he hadn’t meant to stay the entire night. There was no point dwelling on it.Not today, especially not today.Today was our mating anniversary. Three years.Three years since the Moon Goddess had bound our souls together beneath the full moon.Three years since Kael had stood before the entire pack, taken my hands in his, and vowed that no force on earth would ever come between us.Every year since then, he had celebrated it.No matter how busy he was, and no matter what demanded his attentio

  • THE LUNA’S CROWN   Storm night

The first drops of rain tapped softly against the tall windows as I made my way down the corridor.A smile tugged at my lips before I even realized it.It was the Rain.I had always loved the rain, especially when Kael was with me.During storms, he always insisted I slept in his arms. He claimed thunder made my wolf restless.I always argued that I wasn’t afraid. He never believed me.“I know you aren’t,” he’d say with that crooked smile of his. “But I’m using it as an excuse to hold you.”Then he would pull me so tightly against his chest that I could barely move.Every morning after a storm, I’d complain that my arms and legs ached because he refused to let me go in his sleep. He would only laugh before kissing my forehead.“I’ll do it again next time.”Thinking about those nights made my chest warm.Perhaps…Tonight could be one of them. The rain grew heavier as another flash of lightning lit the corridor.I quickened my pace.********When I stepped into our chamber, Kael was alr

  • THE LUNA’S CROWN   A seat beside the throne

Sleep never truly found me that night.Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the same impossible word echo inside my mind.“Mate.”I turned onto my side, watching Kael sleep peacefully beside me.The steady rise and fall of his chest should have comforted me.Instead, guilt settled heavily in my stomach. How could my wolf mistake another man for our mate? It made no sense. The Moon Goddess never made mistakes.Kael was my mate, and had always been my mate.I reached for the bond between us, feeling its familiar warmth.“There,” I whispered to my wolf. “Do you feel that?”She remained silent.“You were wrong.” I whispered. Still, she refused to answer.***********By the time I dressed that morning, I had convinced myself I had imagined the whole thing.Perhaps I was simply exhausted. The past few months had taken their toll on both my heart and my mind. That had to be it. There couldn’t be any other explanation. As I entered the dining room, Kael was already waiting for me.He smiled

  • THE LUNA’S CROWN   The alpha of icefall

There were only a handful of Alphas capable of making an entire pack nervous with nothing more than a scheduled visit.Alpha Edwin of Icefall was one of them.I had heard his name countless times over the years, but I had never met the man himself.Every story painted him differently. Some called him ruthless while others claimed he was the strongest Alpha in the Northern Territories.A few insisted he had single-handedly driven three rogue packs from his borders.Whatever the truth was…His reputation always arrived before he did.***********The packhouse was unusually busy before sunrise.Servants polished every suit of ceremonial armor displayed in the entrance hall.Fresh banners bearing Moonridge’s crest were hung from the balconies. The cooks had been preparing a feast since dawn, even the warriors looked sharper than usual.I found Kael standing in the courtyard, inspecting the honor guard.“You’ve had them training since sunrise.”He looked over his shoulder and smiled. “I ha

  • THE LUNA’S CROWN   The harvest festival

The Harvest Festival began beneath a sky so clear that every star seemed close enough to touch.By sunrise, Moonridge Pack was already alive with laughter.Children darted through the village carrying woven flower baskets while warriors decorated the training grounds with banners bearing the pack’s crest. The scent of roasted meat drifted through the crisp autumn air.For one day, there were no patrol reports to worry about. No council meetings and no whispered conversations about heirs.Today…We celebrated home.As Luna, it was my duty to welcome every guest who entered Moonridge.I stood beside Kael at the entrance of the great hall, greeting elders, neighboring wolves, and visiting merchants.“You’ve outdone yourself, Luna,” Elder Miriam said as she admired the decorations. “The hall has never looked more beautiful.”“Thank you.” I smiled shyly. “The servants worked very hard.”She smiled knowingly. “They had an excellent teacher.”Before I could reply, another family approached

  • THE LUNA’S CROWN   Harvest preparations

The Harvest Festival had always been my favorite time of the year.It was the one celebration every wolf in Moonridge looked forward to, regardless of rank. For three days, the pack forgot about patrols, border disputes, and council meetings.Children raced through the village with flower crowns woven into their hair.Warriors challenged one another to friendly competitions.Families gathered around great bonfires beneath the moon, sharing stories that had been passed down for generations. It was more than a festival. It reminded us that before we were warriors… we were a family. As Luna, the responsibility of organizing the celebration had always fallen to me.It was a responsibility I loved.************The great hall buzzed with activity.Long wooden tables were lined against the walls while servants climbed ladders to hang silver ribbons from the ceiling beams.“Careful with those lanterns,” I called. “Leave enough space between them. We don’t want the fabric catching fire.”“Yes
