POV: ELARA

The first thing I hear is the sound. Bones hitting dirt. A crack. A scream that makes me flinch so hard my vision shakes.

Then everything just… happens. Too fast for my brain to keep up.

This wolf, this huge wolf… comes out of nowhere and slams into the rogue that was literally about to rip my throat open. And he’s not messy like rogues. He’s not wild. He moves like someone who already knows exactly where every weak spot is. Where to bite, where to hit, where to break. No wasted energy. Nothing sloppy.

“Arin… Arin,” I gasp as I crawl over to him. I crouch over his tiny body, shaking and bleeding and trying to actually breathe without passing out. My arm feels like it’s hanging off by a thread. My head spins. My wolf is still screaming, ready to fight again, but my body is absolutely done.

But this stranger wolf? He’s nowhere near done.

He grabs one rogue by the back of the neck and throws it so hard the sound echoes. Another rogue tries sneaking around, but he turns, fast,

POV: ELARANobody says anything. Not Kael. Not Arin. Not even the trees.Kael pulls Arin closer like we’re about to get jumped but Arin isn’t scared at all. He’s just staring into the woods like something’s calling his name. It makes my stomach twist in a nasty way.I keep staring at the treeline. Nothing moves. Nothing breathes. The whole forest feels fake… like it’s holding its breath so it can watch us better.“Inside. Now,” I say.Kael grabs Arin and heads for the cabin fast. I walk backwards, still watching the trees like they’re about to open a mouth. Nothing comes out. Nothing follows. We get inside and Kael shuts the door like he wants to break it.He turns to me, rattled. “Elara… what did you feel?”“I told you. Someone was there.”“There was nothing out there.”“So I’m making it up now?”He drags a hand through his hair, annoyed. “That’s not what I meant.”Arin stands there with his hand still glowing faintly. “Mom, he was there.”Kael crouches. “Who did you see?”Arin squin

  • THE MAD ALPHA    CHAPTER 13: AFTER THE STORM

POV: ELARAI know the second I open my eyes that something’s off. Not in a terrifying way. Just… weird. Quiet. Too quiet. Like the whole world is holding its breath and nobody told me why. It’s been weeks since that night Kael grabbed Arin before he smashed into the ground. Weeks since he muttered those creepy grounding words that made my skin crawl but somehow calmed my son. Weeks since Arin scared the life out of me and I almost shifted without meaning to.And now we’re here. In this old cabin Kael calls his “wandering base,” like that’s a normal thing people just have. The first time we stepped inside, I remember blinking at the dust, the sad little kitchen, the wooden floors that creaked like they were judging us.“This is it,” Kael said, holding the door open like he was showing us a castle.Arin peeked around me. “It’s small.”“It’s safe,” Kael said. “And it’s ours for now.”I didn’t bother correcting him. I just walked in.Life since then has been… simple. Like suspiciously sim

KAEL’S POV.Arin jerks so fast I barely even see it happen. He just shoots up like someone yanked him by a string and I rush to grab him before he hits the ground. He.is burning. Actually burning. His skin feels like fire trying to get out of him, and the glow under it feels like it wants to explode through my hands.“Mommq,” he whimpers, it is just a tiny sound, this little broken breath, and it hits me so hard I almost lose it. I hold him tighter, literally keeping him together withy body because if I don’t, he is gone. He will crack himself in half.Literally.“Elara, move back,” I tell her but my voice shakes. Just a littleI hate that she hears it.“What is happening? Kael, what is happening to my son?” She reaches out, but he convulses again and she snaps her hand back with a gasp. Like he burns, which he doesYeah. Hemis fire. He is heat. And if I don't do something soon, he is going to burn down everything around him.I kneel down, holding him against me. “Just… just let me wo

  • THE MAD ALPHA    CHAPTER 11: THE CONSEQUENCES OF LIGHT

POV: ELARA Arin’s scream hits me before anything else. It’s so sharp it makes my whole body jerk. Then the smell hits, burning dirt, burning skin, burning something that shouldn’t even be real. My heart goes straight into my throat.I grab his hand without thinking and yank it up, and the second I see the ground under it, my stomach drops. There’s a shape burned into the dirt. A crescent. The same one on his skin. The same one that’s been following us since the day he was born.“Arin,” I say, and my voice breaks in the middle. “Baby, look at me. Look at me.”He’s shaking so hard his teeth click. His hand is still glowing and getting brighter, like it’s trying to light the whole cave on fire. I grab his shoulders and he’s so hot I flinch, but I don’t let go.“Mommy it hurts,” he whimpers, and I swear something in my chest actually cracks.Kael rushes toward us but stops a couple steps away, like he hit a wall. I can feel him staring at that mark. His eyes go sharp, like he knows somet

Like it was waiting for me. Like it was hiding on top of me. I can feel it on my cheek. I don’t like it.“Find me.”I jump so hard I hit my head on the rock. It makes a big hurt sound in my head and my teeth bite my tongue and it tastes like metal and blood and I wanna cry but my voice gets stuck. My throat feels all tight like hands are inside it.Everything looks wrong. Wrong wrong wrong.I try to see, but the dark won’t stay still. It wiggles. It makes weird shapes on the walls like they are bending or shaking or smiling with no mouth. The cave looks like it’s breathing and I don’t want it to breathe on me.My hands shake so much I can’t stop them. My legs do it too. I don’t like when my body moves without me telling it to. I whisper “stop,” but it sounds like a mosquito voice. Tiny and stupid. I feel stupid.

  • THE MAD ALPHA    CHAPTER 9: A DEBT THAT BLEEDS

POV: KAELI walk in front of them, not because I want to, but because I need to see everything first. Every sound. Every shift of the wind. Every shadow that looks wrong. The forest is too quiet, and quiet means something is waiting. Quiet means something survived. My shoulders stay tight. My hands stay half-curled, ready. My wolf pushes against my skin, pacing, restless. I don’t let him out. Not yet. Not while they’re behind me like this.I hear her… Elara, breathing a little too fast. I hear the soft steps of the kid. Arin. He’s trying to keep up, but he’s tired. He keeps tripping over roots because he’s watching everything except where he’s walking.“Slow down,” Elara snaps at me suddenly. “He’s a child.”I don’t turn around. I just lift a hand a little. “Can’t. Not here.”She mutters something sharp under her breath. “Bloody, weirdo.” She probably thinks I can’t hear it. I hear everything.Arin trips again and I stop. So fast Elara bumps into me.“You alright?” I ask him.He nods,
