The crown began to wake.

Seraphina felt it before she understood what was happening. A pulse moved through the darkness beneath her, slow and heavy, like the heartbeat of something buried beneath the world. Each beat shuddered through the cavern, rattling loose dust from the broken walls while, far below, the black towers trembled.

Then the crown answered.

Light burst from somewhere beneath the city.

Seraphina dropped faster.

“Seraphina!”

Kael's voice followed her through the darkness, but his

The first sound was stone grinding against stone.Seraphina stood beneath the crimson crown, Dawn clenched in her right hand and Dusk in her left, while dust drifted from the ceiling around them. The buried kingdom had gone unnaturally quiet after the First Hunger vanished, but the silence didn't last.Something scraped against the foundations beneath their feet.Once.Then again.Slow. Heavy.Close enough to make the stone tremble beneath Seraphina's boots.Elara pressed herself against Dusk-born's side. The little girl's fingers tightened around the fabric of her clothes as she stared at the cracked floor."That's where it is," she whispered.Seraphina kept both blades lowered, though the crimson light running along their edges had begun to pulse. "What's down there?""The thing."Another tremor rolled through the chamber.A thin crack appeared between the ancient stones.Caelan took a step backward.Seraphina noticed the movement without taking her eyes from the floor. Fear had fin

Something breathed beyond the Veil. The sound was so deep that Seraphina felt it through the soles of her boots rather than hearing it properly. Dust trembled across the broken stones. The First Hunger had stopped moving, its countless eyes fixed on the darkness behind it, while the severed piece of its body lying near Seraphina's feet had gone completely still.Even the guardian had stopped fighting.Seraphina tightened her grip on Dawn and Dusk. Heat from the crimson crown pressed against her scalp, but the warmth did little to ease the uneasiness spreading through her body. The man who had crossed the Veil had gone pale.Seraphina noticed the change in him before she noticed anything else.“You know what that is.”His attention remained fixed on the darkness. “Yes.”The answer came too quickly.Seraphina stepped closer, boots grinding over loose stone. “Then tell me.”He swallowed. His hand had tightened around the hilt at his side, although he hadn't drawn the weapon. Before he co

The First Hunger opened every eye.Seraphina stood beneath the crimson crown with Dawn in her right hand and Dusk in her left, watching the creature fill the broken ceiling. Black mist rolled around its enormous body and spilled down the ancient walls in greasy tendrils. Yet the man who had just stepped through the Veil seemed to notice none of it. His attention remained fixed on the little girl beside the guardian.Elara stared at him for a heartbeat before running across the rubble.“Father.”The man caught her before she could stumble over the fallen stones and pulled her against his chest. His ancient armor scraped against her shoulders, but his hands were careful as he checked the back of her head and then held her close.Seraphina watched them.Something inside her hurt. She didn't understand why. She had never met this man in the life she remembered. She had no memory of raising Elara, no memory of this chamber, and no memory of standing beside him beneath a crown. Yet seeing h

The First Hunger descended through the broken ceiling.Black mist poured into the buried chamber first, thick enough to hide the ancient stonework. Then something vast moved inside it. The creature’s many eyes opened one after another, filling the darkness above with a sickly, shifting glow.Seraphina stood beneath it with the Sword of Dawn in her right hand and the Sword of Dusk in her left. The two blades pulled against her grip as though they recognized something inside her that she was only beginning to understand.Across the chamber, the crowned man watched her with an expression that had lost all trace of surprise.“You weren’t supposed to wake like this,” he said.Seraphina kept her eyes on him. “Then tell me how I was supposed to wake.”He hesitated. That hesitation was enough. She turned toward the man who had called himself her first husband. He remained near the ancient steps, with the little girl standing between them and the guardian crouched behind her. Dusk-born stayed

The laughter continued beneath the chamber. It wasn't loud. That made it worse. The sound traveled through the stone like a vibration from somewhere impossibly deep, passing beneath Seraphina's boots and climbing into her bones. The enormous creature lowered its head, its pale eyes fixed on the black mist surrounding Caelan.Caelan kept his attention on the crowned man.“You should be dead.”The crowned man held the Sword of Dawn across his body. Gold light moved beneath the blade's surface, casting a faint glow over his armor.“I was.”Several paces away, the first husband had stopped fighting. His sword remained in his hand, the tip lowered toward the stone as he studied the two men.“You know who he is?”Caelan's gaze shifted briefly toward him.“You should ask him.”The first husband moved farther into the open space between the broken pillars. “I'm asking you.”A faint smile touched Caelan's mouth.“You always did prefer simple answers.”The crowned man stepped between them befor

Seraphina couldn't look away from the Sword of Dawn. The blade rested firmly in the crowned man's hand, its golden light moving beneath the metal like something alive. The same weapon that had answered her from the depths of the chamber now stood within reach, carried by the stranger who had just looked directly at her and called her by a name she had spent a lifetime forgetting.“Veyra.”Seraphina's fingers curled at her sides.“My name is Seraphina.”The crowned man's expression remained calm.“I heard you.”“Then use it.”“You don't understand who you're speaking as.”The Dusk-born shifted between them, bringing the Sword of Dusk up until its silver edge pointed toward the crowned man's chest.“Take another step and you'll find out exactly what she understands.”The first husband remained several paces away, watching the exchange without interfering. His hand rested on the hilt of his own sword, but he made no attempt to draw it.The crowned man lowered the Sword of Dawn slightly.
