The shockwave left the mountain trembling.

Dust and small stones continued to fall around us, but the worst of the fire’s roar had changed. The curse that had chained Drake to this place for five centuries was gone. I could feel the difference in the air itself lighter, as if the mountain had finally been allowed to breathe.

Drake stood and pulled me gently to my feet. The last traces of white light still flickered under my skin before fading completely. His scars were only pale silver lines now. When he looked at me, the red glow in his eyes had been replaced by something clearer and far more dangerous.

“Can you walk?” he asked.

I nodded. My body ached and my injured arm throbbed, but nothing felt broken. “I’m tired of these tunnels. Get us out of here.”

He led me through the remaining passages with new urgency. Without the curse holding him, the mountain no longer resisted his presence. Paths that had been sealed opened under his hands. We climbed steadily upward until cool night air touched my face for the first time in what felt like days.

We stepped out onto a wide stone ledge high on the mountain’s face. The sky above us still carried the fading afterglow of the white column of light that had announced Drake’s freedom. Below us, the lower slopes burned in places where the oil and fire had taken hold. And farther down, spreading across the open ground like a dark tide, waited an army.

Torches by the hundreds. Rows of armed wolves. Silver weapons catching the firelight. At the center of it all, mounted on a black horse, sat Ethan Blake.

My stomach turned.

Drake’s hand settled at the small of my back. “He brought everyone.”

“How many?” I asked, though I already knew the answer would be too many.

“Enough to bury us if we are careless.” His voice stayed calm, but I felt the tension running through him. “Hailman will be among them. Maya too, most likely. They will not let us leave this mountain alive if they can help it.”

I stared down at the sea of torches. Every pack that answered to the royal line seemed to be represented. Warriors who had grown up believing the First Alpha was a mindless monster. Wolves who would fight to protect the only power structure they had ever known.

“They still think you’re the enemy,” I said quietly.

“They have been taught to think that for five hundred years.” Drake’s jaw tightened. “Tonight we change the lesson.”

A horn sounded from the army below. The ranks shifted. Ethan raised one hand, and a wave of silver-tipped arrows was nocked in near-perfect unison. Even from this height I could see the cold determination on his face. He had come to finish what the fire had failed to do.

Drake turned to me. The wind pulled at his dark hair. In the moonlight he looked every bit the ancient king the stories had tried to erase—tall, scarred, and no longer bound by anyone’s magic but his own.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

“Drake—”

“I mean it, Aria.” His eyes locked on mine. “You have already done the impossible. You broke a curse that held for centuries. But this fight is mine. When I shift, the army will focus on me. That is what I want. You stay close to the rock face and you do not step into open ground unless I call for you.”

I hated the order and understood it at the same time. My new magic was powerful, but I had only used it once and barely understood how to control it. Against hundreds of trained warriors it might not be enough.

Still, the idea of watching him face them alone made something fierce and stubborn rise in my chest.

“I’m not going to hide while you fight for both of us,” I said.

A ghost of a smile touched his mouth. “I know. That is why I am asking you to trust me instead of arguing.”

He stepped to the edge of the ledge. Below us the army waited, arrows ready, silver blades drawn. Ethan’s voice carried up the mountain, magnified by the natural amphitheater of the slopes.

“Drake Cole,” Ethan called. “The mountain is surrounded. Surrender the girl and submit, and I may yet grant you a quick death. Refuse, and every wolf here will make certain neither of you leaves this place.”

Drake’s answer was quiet, meant only for me.

“Five hundred years,” he said. “I have not taken my true form since the night they bound me.”

He glanced back at me one last time. The mate bond pulsed between us, strong and sure.

“Whatever happens next,” he said, “you are the reason I am free. Remember that.”

Then he stepped off the ledge and into open air.

His body changed mid-fall.

It was nothing like the painful, forced shifts I had seen in the packs. This was fluid and absolute—muscle and bone rearranging with terrifying grace. Dark fur exploded across his skin. Limbs lengthened and thickened. When he landed on the slope below, the impact cracked stone.

The wolf that rose was larger than any I had ever seen or imagined. Shoulders higher than a horse’s back. Eyes burning with clean power. The First Alpha, unbound at last.

A ripple of pure fear moved through the royal army.

Drake lifted his massive head and released a howl that shook the mountain itself.

The siege had begun.

Chapter 11 Serena was still on her knees, one hand pressed to the shallow cut on her neck, staring at me as if she no longer recognized the girl she had once called friend. Maya lay several paces away, stunned and gasping, the silver dagger out of reach. White light still flickered around my fingers.I did not have time to comfort either of them.Across the field Drake was already moving again. The moment Maya’s threat ended, he turned his full attention on the center of the army. Ethan tried to rally what remained of his forces, but the sight of the First Alpha—unbound, protected, and no longer a story—had broken something fundamental in the ranks. Wolves who had been ready to die for the royal line only minutes earlier now looked uncertain.Drake reached Ethan’s horse in three powerful leaps. The animal reared in terror. Ethan swung a silver sword in a desperate arc, but Drake’s massive shoulder slammed into the horse’s side and sent both rider and mount crashing to the ground. Etha

I kept my glowing hand pressed to the rubble and called his name again. On the other side of the collapse I heard stone grinding, claws scraping, and Drake’s low, furious growls. He was tearing the barrier apart with nothing but strength and desperation.“I’m here,” I shouted once more. “I’m all right.”The white light still pulsed faintly under my skin, softer now but steady. Every time I breathed it answered, as if it had finally woken and refused to sleep again. I did not fully understand it yet, but I knew one thing with absolute certainty: this power belonged to me. It had never been absence. It had been waiting.A large slab of rock shifted. Dust poured down. Then a bloodied hand punched through the gap, followed by Drake’s scarred arm and finally his face. His eyes found me instantly. Relief and something fiercer burned in them.“Aria.”He forced the opening wider and climbed through, ignoring the sharp edges that cut his skin. The moment he reached me he dropped to his knees a

Hailman Hurk stepped fully into the torchlight, silver blade gleaming in his hand. Dust still hung in the air from the collapse, and the heat from the fire above pressed down like a second skin. Behind the wall of broken stone I could hear Drake roaring my name, the sound raw and furious, but the rock between us was too thick. He could not reach me.Hailman smiled. The expression sat wrong on his scarred face.“Well,” he said. “Look what the fire failed to kill. The soft little offering. Still breathing. Still useless.”I pushed myself up on shaking arms. My shoulder throbbed where the falling stone had hit me, and blood from the earlier cut had dried sticky down my arm. I had no weapon. No wolf. Nothing but the broken chain links still hanging from my wrists.“Stay back,” I said. The words came out rough from smoke. He laughed. “Or what? You’ll cry at me? Beg the way the others did?” He took a slow step closer, boots scraping over bone and rubble. “I watched them drag you up the moun

Smoke woke me before the heat did.It slid into the chamber in thin gray ribbons at first, then thicker, carrying the sharp smell of burning oil and scorched stone. I pushed myself up on my bound hands, heart already racing. Drake was on his feet in an instant, head turned toward the sealed doors.“They lit the mountain,” he said, voice low and rough. “We have to move.”The chains still linked my wrists. He broke them with one hard twist of his hands, the iron snapping like dry wood. I rubbed the raw skin as he pulled me toward the back of the sanctuary. Heat was already rising through the floor.“There are older tunnels,” he said. “The curse kept me from using them before. It may not hold the same way now.”We slipped through a narrow crack behind the altar that I would never have noticed on my own. The passage beyond was low and tight, walls pressing close on both sides. Drake went first, his broad shoulders nearly scraping the stone. I followed, one hand on the rough wall, the othe

Chapter 5Ethan Blake stood at the tall windows of the royal solar when the runner burst through the doors without waiting for permission. The man’s face was gray with dust and fear. He dropped to one knee on the polished marble and held out a blood-stained scrap of leather.“My Alpha. Message from the mountain path. The offering lives. The First Alpha is awake.”The words landed like a blade between Ethan’s shoulders. He did not turn immediately. He watched the torches along the outer wall flicker in the evening wind and forced his breathing to stay even. Behind him the runner waited, trembling.“Repeat that,” Ethan said.“The scouts found the girl alive inside the temple. A man was with her. Scarred. Massive. He killed three of them with his hands. The fourth crawled out and named him. Drake Cole. The First Alpha. The binding is broken enough that he can take human form again.”Ethan closed his eyes for a single heartbeat. Five hundred years of careful lies had held. One soft, wolf-
