The questions wouldn't leave me, even as I lay curled by the corner of the cave, the cold stone pressed against my sides.

My mind kept replaying their faces and their conversations. The bald one's steady form, the playboy's cocky expression, and him. The long-haired alpha who seemed to stare into my soul even though he didn't see me.

The white wolf

They had said it like I was both a prize and a problem.

I lay on my back, my eyes glued to the jagged ceiling of the cave. Sleep seems to have eluded me.

Every time I shut my eyes, the alpha's soft, commanding tone echoed in my head: "Someone's here."

My body hummed from the leftover adrenaline from the run. I sat up and ran my hand through my hair, unsure of what to do.

I stood up; lying here and doing nothing wasn't an option. I had to look for more clues on why they're here, and I won't find them if I stayed hidden in my cave.

I shifted, bones snapping and rearranging in a familiar rhythm. Fur replaced my human skin and fangs, my human

  • THE REVENGE OF THE WHITE WOLF    CHAPTER FORTY

My howl ripped through the town and the surrounding trees like a wave flowing over the sea. It broke the still and peaceful night. I could hear the distant whispers, the quickened heartbeats. I could smell their fear. They would mindlink quickly, telling everyone to stay indoors. Only the strong ones would come out.And just like I predicted, they came out in small numbers, each strong enough to fight.I decided to stay on the hill till dawn, to catch every reaction, to drink in every ounce of fear.Snow covered me like a blanket, but I didn't feel the cold at all. The anticipation of seeing them stumble upon my gift, to watch their reactions, to savour all their fears kept the chill from my bones I lay perfectly still, my eyes locked on them. Waiting for the guards to smell the death waiting for them.My earlier howl had shaken them, they stood on high alert. I could sense their fear. They stood on edge, scanning the shadows. They didn't know what it was, only that something was out

I was perched at an alley that connected to the forest. My eyes were on Isla, observing her reaction. She stood frozen, like someone had pressed her pause button. I could see her blinking repeatedly, almost like she was trying to convince herself that she didn't just see me. Slowly she raised her, scanning her surroundings with quick nervous glances. Horror was written all over her face as she peered at every passerby, looking for me.I was satisfied at the sight. she was horrified and doubting what her own eyes.Turning away, I slipped back into the woods as quietly as I came. Halfway through, I shifted and gripped the bag of what I bought with my fangs, running deeper intothe woods, away from Ember Moon, towards my cave.I had been waiting for midnight, it meant something was going to die. It finally came When I finally stepped outside, snow was falling. The first snow of the season, I took it as a good omen.Starting off at a slow jog, my paws landed silently on moss and grass. My

  • THE REVENGE OF THE WHITE WOLF    CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

I hurried inside the cave, restless and in a dilemma.I was the white wolf; my duty was to protect my pack from danger of any kind, and that includes this coming attack. But the people I was meant to protect had betrayed me, so they didn't deserve my protection.I paced about the cave; I couldn't easily let go of what they'd done to me. I still wanted them to pay, but not like this.My senses suddenly caught an odd smell, and I paused. That was too strange to be a forest scent.Shifting into my wolf form, I peeped out through the vines. It was quiet and cold, really cold. But there was nothing out of the ordinary. I was about to turn back in when my nostrils caught a whiff of that horrifying smell: the rogue. But before I could confirm, the smell faded. No, I wasn't going to let it go.I rushed out, sprinting in the direction my instincts led me.My senses were on high alert. It almost seemed like it hadn't been here in the first place, as I quickly lost the trail. But I refused to g

  • THE REVENGE OF THE WHITE WOLF    CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

I stood there for a while, watching their movements and trying to read their lips, hoping to catch what they were discussing.I caught the words "can be dangerous."I needed to get in there for a better angle.I regret not bringing some of that cash with me. Where would I have put it anyway?I slid through the glass doors and hurriedly walked to a table close to them, my head bowed and face covered. The playboy sat with his back to me, the bald guy on his left side, and the alpha was opposite them, facing me directly. But he was staring outside, at the same time listening to what the bald-headed guy was saying, his fingers drumming the side of his coffee cup rhythmically.“What would you like to order?" A cheerful waitress approached me, pen and notepad in hand.I was shocked; I drew my hoodie over my face and shook my head.“Can you give me just a minute? I'm trying to remember this food I've been dying to have," I lied. She nodded and walked away to another customer.I was attentive

  • THE REVENGE OF THE WHITE WOLF    CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

I woke up at night, panting. The nightmare was back. The rogue jumped from behind to attack me, the deep slicing of its claws to my side. I woke up at the point where it was about to bite my head off. I was sweating even though it was cold. The fire was dead; no wonder. The vine leaves swayed gently to the rhythm of the breeze. I stood up and stepped out. Taking in fresh air. I observed my surroundings, but there was nothing out of the ordinary.I went back to the place where I had seen the paw prints, wanting to see if there was anything new, but there was nothing. It was clean; even the previous prints had disappeared.I couldn't sleep, so I took off my clothes and shifted and ran to the high place in the mountains and sat on the same spot, overlooking the lowlands below, but then something caught my eye.I narrowed my eyes to get a better view. There was a fire in the distance, in an open space.I climbed down from the hill and began to trace the smoke. I moved stealthily; my sens
