“How dare you go against my command?” He said, his voice laced with spite. “You are a rogue and should be done with the moment you crossed my pac–”
“Then kill me already” I said flatly, my eyes locked on him. I hate the feeling of being indebted to anyone.
He was taken aback by my reply but it didn't last. He went right back to his cruel self “I wish I could”, he muttered, and within seconds he lifted me and dropped me on the bed “Keep quiet and stay still” He snapped and stormed out of the room with long strides, locking the door shut behind him.
I sat there stunned, replaying his words in my head. He wished he could kill me. He wished to. Was he serious? Honestly, he has every reason to, but what was I thinking? Why did I say that?
I groaned as I fell flat on the bed. I wondered how long I would stay here and why he needed my wolf’s presence in order for him to converse with me.
****
Weeks passed and I was gradually healing, my ankles no longer hurt like it used to and the stitched gash on my back had healed. I was still locked up in this room, only the maids attended to me and when the doctor was needed, the doctor visited. The alpha never visited since the last time we encountered each other.
During the past weeks, I befriended the maids. I watched ever so closely every step they had made any time they removed their gloves and they never failed to keep the gloves in their respective pockets.
“Good morning Noelani,” Ivana said with a smile as she walked into the room with a tray of food. She was the shorter maid with blonde hair.
“Good morning Ivana” I replied to her and looked behind her in search of Stephanie “Where's Stephanie?” I asked
“Oh…she would not be coming. She has a lot on her schedule” She replied as she placed the food on the nightstand. “Here's your breakfast. I'd be on my way now” she turned to leave.
“Wait!” I yelled almost immediately. She turned back and looked at me with confusion and concern. “Um…the bathroom, I couldn't…I mean there's something wrong with the tap, I couldn't use it to have my bath” I said, as I climbed out of the bed.
“Oh… when did it happen? Last night or this morning?” She asked, stepping ahead of me into the toilet. I followed slowly behind.
“Last night” I replied, stopping at the bathroom door.
“Let me have a look first, then later I'll have someone fix it before daybreak” She crouched to inspect the tap.
“I'm sorry Ivana” I said before I shut the bathroom door lock.
“Noelani, open this door! How could you lock me in here? Noelani!” She yelled, pushing against the door. She's lucky it wasn't laced with silver.
“I'm sorry again! I just can't stand being locked up in here, thanks for nursing my injuries!” I said.
I rushed to the door, it was not fully closed. I shoved my hand into the gap between the door and the frame pulled it open and slipped into the hallway.
My heart pounded as I sprinted down the corridor. The room I was kept in was the last room on the floor. Within seconds, I came across a staircase and ran downstairs when I heard footsteps and a female’s soft voice floated through the air.
I peeped around the corner. A petite lady with long golden curls and a pretty sundress was talking to the alpha. I gasped when I saw him. He was smiling at her. I took a step back but curiosity rooted me.
Who is she? The alpha was smiling at her.
As they conversed, I caught her name: Hannah. She was so beautiful, bubbly and full of joy. Within a short time I noticed her.
I gasped when her eyes landed on me. She squinted her eyes to get a better look and then the alpha turned to look at me. He hadn't sensed me till now and for a moment I myself had forgotten my own purpose.
I stepped back behind the wall, heart hammering. My eyes caught an oak door on the other end of the corridor and I made a run for it when I heard the alpha footsteps coming behind me.
“Rogue?” He said once he gripped my arm, his gaze sharp “Who let you out?” He growled almost like he didn't want Hannah to hear.
“Ragnar, is everything okay? Do you need my help?” She called sweetly from the far end of the corridor.
“No Hannah” He answered quickly "Stay where you are, just heading to my office to get something” He replied.
He dragged me towards the oak door I had aimed for, opened it and shoved me inside. He glared at me, signaling me to stay put. He yanked the key from the lock and locked the door on his way out. I walked towards the door to bang on it, when it swung open. He stood in front of me.
“Don't even dare” He snapped “Or I'll kill you. And trust me this time it's not a wish. I would kill you if you plan on doing what you're thinking” He said with so much cruelty it frightened me to stillness.
I stood there frightened and scared, I glanced around the room. It was an office. His office. Every inch of his office was suffused with his scent. A massive dark oak desk dominated the center of the room, neatly arranged files were placed beside a black apple monitor. Behind it sat a high-backed leather chair. On the left was a neat twin shelf that had two flower vases at the base; The far end on the right side of the desk was a window wall that viewed a garden. The reflected sunlight kissed the black sofa, highlighting its sharp luxurious edge. The walls were painted in a cold monotone, void of warmth.
I reached for the door knob but it didn't budge, he was holding the knob from the outside.
Why does he keep locking me up?
Then I heard her voice again.
“Ragnar what's going on? Why are you holding the door like that” I heard Hannah at the other side of the door. I pressed my ears against the door to hear them properly. My senses weren't so sharp despite my healing.
“Hannah I said to not come here” He groaned, exhausted.
“Sorry, I wasn't trying to meddle” She said quietly “I thought maybe you needed help”
“It's okay Hannah, I'm fine. Let's just go downstairs”
“Okay okay, well as I was saying” Her tone brightened again “I can't wait for you to find your mate”
“And I've said again and again that I don't need nor want one” His answer came quickly and clipped as their footsteps faded down the hallway.
‘Mate’

NOELANI POV‘Mate’I froze upon hearing Lana speak in my head for the first time in years.‘Lana…I've missed you, it's been long, been years’ I whispered in my head.‘Mate’, she said again, ignoring what I said.‘What do you mean by mate, who's my mate?’ ‘Alpha is mate’ Her last word sent a cold shiver down my spine. That's when I smelt it. His smell. It smelled like wood, sweet coffee and a hint of warm cinnamon, mellow and impossibly comforting, something I couldn't name. It surrounded his office.‘All this time the alpha was my mate? He knew all along? Why didn't he tell me? Was that why he demanded that I stay quiet till you come back? But he just told Hannah he didn't have a mate and didn't need one.’Lana whimpered in my head after my last statement.‘Don't worry yourself Lana, there's no way he'd hate us, he can't hate us. Mate can't hate each other and if they do, they will both be hurting themselves. And legend says rejected mates would be inflicted with pains worse than an

NOELANI POVI stretched slowly, the softness beneath me was foreign but oddly comforting. The sheets were warm, the mattress cradled my sore body in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. For once, the pain wasn’t unbearable. Just a dull throb echoing through my limbs, not the sharp agony I was used to waking up to.My eyelids flickered open. But before I could fully take in my surroundings, everything that occurred the day before was recollected. I bolted upright, my heart leaped into my throat.Neither was I in chains nor was I on a cold floor locked up in a cell. Instead, I was in a room. Dimly lit, warm, and clean. The room was decorated with muted pink tones and thick curtains. I found myself on a queen-sized bed and a duvet that covered my legs. I lifted the duvet a little and saw my left ankle bandaged in a solid cast, and my back.I winced, rolling my shoulders slowly. My back felt stiff and stitched up. I used my right-hand fingers to trace the stitches as far as I could reach.
NOELANI POV Day in, day out, I scavenged for food. It’s strange being raised as the Alpha’s child with fresh meat, food, and fruits daily, only to now fight over scraps. Hunting used to be a game. Now it’s survival. I’ve fought with rogues who claim they’re stronger than I. Maybe they are. They’re wild untamed in ways I’m still learning to be. How long has it been? A year? Two? I’ve lost track of time out here in the wild. No contact, no pack, not even Lana. My wolf has been silent since the incident. I haven’t shifted once. The wild was cold in ways the body can't explain. Nights bite, and days blur. I sleep with one eye open, if I sleep at all. I've forgotten what it feels like to laugh. I used to laugh so much, especially with Lana, my wolf. She was the fire in me, fierce, proud. Now she's gone quiet, buried deep beneath pain. Some days, I wonder if she’s still there at the back of my head. I had gotten better at moving in silence. At hiding my scent, watching the shadows. Be
NOELANI POV“Mum, I'm back!” I yelled. My voice echoed down the hallway of my house. As I dropped my backpack on the dining table. I came back home from visiting my grandpa’s grave. I stayed by his grave and rant even though I know he can't reply. He was so loving while he was alive. He was the alpha before he handed over to my father. The whole pack loved him.“Eddy?” I called out to my brother. But no answer Normally, I would have been greeted by the omegas–they were the lowest of ranks and are considered helpers as they are the weakest–but I didn't see anyone, didn’t hear a thing either.“Is anyone home?” I called out.I went towards the staircase and to my horror I saw blood flowing down the stairs. My heart raced, louder than my footsteps up the stairs, the closer I got towards the direction of the blood flow. I pushed aside Lana’s whimpering voice in my head–Lana is my wolf, she stays in my head while I'm in my human form–Her whimpers tried to tell me something but I refused to
