ZAYN'S POV

I put my hands into my pocket as I stared through the glass penthouse. I kept thinking of many things at once and I didn't notice when my brother, Lorenzo pushed open the door and walked in.

“Is the driver ready?” I asked, turning my head to the side.

“Yup…but dad wants to have a few words with you before we leave,”

“I'm not interested in having any conversation with him,” I said and walked towards my desk to pick up the glass of wine I didn't finish earlier.

“You might want to see him, it's regarding the future of this gang,” Lorenzo said, walking up to me to take the glass cup from my hand.

“And no drinking, we can't have tipsy before we arrive at the dinner party,” he said, patting my shoulder.

“I said what I said, I'm not having a conversation with that man,” I said, adjusting my tie properly. I walked out of the study, the atmosphere tensed and cold. Lorenzo sighed and I heard him set the glass cup down on the mahogany table as he followed me out.

I headed towards the elevator and the doors were sliding open when my dad's voice stopped me in my tracks.

“You're not leaving this house until we have that conversation.” Lorenzo's breath hitched beside me. I clenched my fists tightly as I reluctantly turned and followed him down to his room.

My dad's black hair was starting to grey. I stared at his broad firm back, hate flowing deeply through my veins as I stared at him. His room was usual, no single picture of my mom, just guns and stacks of wine.

“This defiance attitude of yours is what is stopping me from giving you the position as the mafia Don, I wouldn't want to pass on the legacy to someone as stubborn headed as you, that's not how I've been running this gang…”

“If you insist on not wanting to give me, why call me?” I snapped at him impatiently.

“Don't speak to me in that tone Zayn!” he snapped back at me. I stared at him, my jaw hardening. He stared back at me, his handsome but ageing features holding authority and power.

“If you called me here to start another argument I better start going, I have a lot more important things to deal with,” I said and turned to leave.

“I called you here because I think it's time for you to take over the gang.” I paused in my tracks.

“Only on one condition though.” I heard him light a cigarette. I turned to stare at him.

“You bring home a wife, I'm not giving it to you unless you find someone you're going to get married to.”

“If you think you want me to trap another woman in a marriage and treat her like a liability the exact way you treated mom then forget it, I'm not doing this, you can pass the position to Lorenzo,I don't care.”

“Lorenzo is too immature to handle the gang affairs, you're the right person for this Zayn.”

“I'm not repeating myself, now if you'll excuse me.” I turned and opened the door. I walked towards the elevator and headed outside. Lorenzo was already waiting inside, sitting patiently. The chauffeur opened the door and I stepped inside. The door shut close and the car started, three other cars following closely behind as we headed to the venue for the dinner party.

“How's it going with the recruitment for the undercover bodyguard?” I asked Lorenzo.

“We still haven't found a perfect candidate, most of the people I've seen don't have a clean background.” I adjusted my tie again and picked up my tablet.

“Speed it up, I can't afford to be going everywhere with 3 cars of bodyguards following me, “

“Sure thing.”

I wasn't particularly fond of dinner parties, but I was specifically going here to strike a deal with another influential person.

The car arrived at the venue in a few minutes and Lorenzo and I stepped out. The doors were opened for us and we stepped in.

I was greeted by the sound of soft slow elegant music that sickened my stomach. All eyes turned to us immediately and almost immediately a lady walked up to me with a bright smile. Her hands wrapped around my arm as she grinned at me.

“You didn't tell me you were coming, Zee,” she whined. I abruptly detached myself without giving her any attention. Lorenzo did a good job in engaging her in a conversation and that kept her off my back.

My eyes scanned the area in search of the person I was here for. I found the bald, round man and I headed towards him, ignoring every other person who tried to strike up a conversation or smile with me.

The round man saw me and grinned. He walked up to me laughing cheerily at me. I stared straight at him, my face expressionless.

“I'm here with the documents,” I went straight to the point. The man's smile faltered a bit but then he nodded. It was at that moment Lorenzo walked up to me and whispered into my ear.

ZAYNI walked confidently to the elevator. Leonard was waiting outside Infront of the car by the time I got to the entrance. He opened the car door before the chauffeur could come over and I got him. He got in beside me and shut the door close.“Cancel any recruitments for new bodyguards, I found one already… including the fake fiancee issue.” I said adjusting my tie.“Including the fake fiancee?” He asked surprised.“You heard me…”“Just like that, you immediately discussed the contract with her, no background check, you don't know who that person is…”“I told Jade to handle that, I found a once in a blue moon opportunity I wasn't going to let it slip between my fingers. I'll rather seize the opportunity now and bear whatever consequences it has than let it slip between my fingers?” Lorenzo looked confused.“They're millions of girls out there that would readily agree to that contract, there's nothing rare about that,” he grumbled.“They're millions of girls that would do that but I

AURELIA He picked up the cup and walked towards my table to sit down. He didn't talk, instead he picked up stacks of papers on his desk and started scanning through each and every sheet until he came across one. He paused, looked at me and looked back at the paper.“Celez Martins…” he read out. I clasped my hands on top of my knee, suddenly conscious that I was sitting right in front of the very man I was sent to spy on. That would explain the dangerous aura that radiated off him when I first set eyes on him.“28, orphan, attended only high school before becoming a drop out….”Vincenzo did a great job in putting my personal life out there on the report.“Interesting,” he said and dropped the paper. He stood up, pressed something on his table and walked towards the window. Jade walked in seconds later, his arm still dangling awkwardly beside him.“I need you to run a background check on her and get back to me.” Jade stared at Zayn in disbelief “You're seriously not thinking of hiring

  • THE RUIN HE CHOSE    THE COLD MARBLED PATH

AURELIA I looked up and cursed internally when I realized I lost my cool. Now I was getting kicked out of here because I couldn't control my temper. I was starting to think about how disappointed Vincenzo was going to be when he discovered I got kicked out on the first day when I suddenly noticed the man who had interrupted the squabble between me and Jade.I stared at him.He stood there like a shadow carved from marble, impossibly still, and for a heartbeat the world around us seemed to narrow until only he remained. His face was almost too perfect to be real, high, sharp cheekbones that could cut glass, a strong, defined jawline, and a straight nose that spoke of old-world aristocracy. Full lips pressed into a hard line, and dark, thick brows framed eyes so black they looked like polished onyx, swallowing light instead of reflecting it. Those eyes... God, they pulled you in and warned you away at the same time. His skin was smooth and lightly tanned, stretched over features so sy

  • THE RUIN HE CHOSE    THE HOUSE THAT SWALLOWS YOU WHOLE

AURELIA The massive iron gates creaked open like they didn’t really want to let me in, that low mechanical rumble vibrating through my chest as I walked up the long, winding driveway. Even from a distance, the mansion hit me hard. It was huge, almost ridiculously huge. The place stretched out in every direction with dark wings, sharp black roofs, and towers that faded into the misty hills behind it. I remember thinking you could probably wander around inside for days and still get lost. Hell, I already felt small and swallowed up just looking at it.The outside was this cold mix of sleek modern lines and old-money menace. Dark stone walls shot through with black marble, massive windows that looked like sheets of polished obsidian, and just enough gold to catch the light. Thick ivy crawled up one whole side in a way that felt deliberate, like even the plants here had been trained to look expensive and slightly threatening.Bodyguards were everywhere, posted around the grounds like sil

  • THE RUIN HE CHOSE    INTO THE LION'S DEN

AURELIA I took one final last look at the room. I didn't know if I would be coming back here. I was going to spy on a dangerous Mafia heir, gather information and records and send them to Vincenzo, I was basically going there to ruin him. If I succeeded I guess I was born to be lucky for once in my already miserable life and if I get caught I'm definitely not coming out of it alive. I sighed and closed the door behind me. Vincenzo was in his office when I walked in. His handsome face was completely focused and serious as he had a discussion with Slade. He looked so dangerous I had to remind myself that this was another mafia Don I shouldn't disappoint. Our familiarity and closeness made me forget how dangerous he can be sometimes. I put it at the back of my mind to not disappoint me. He has been treating me like his own blood for 11 years now, there's no saying that he might switch on me if I play funny, no one messes with Vincenzo and I'll try not to mess with him. He dismissed Sla

  • THE RUIN HE CHOSE    THE LOCKET I HAVE LEFT

AURELIA'S POVI didn't wait for a shower before I immediately walked out and headed back to the training room. I searched everywhere, my heart hammering in my chest as I crawled on my knees looking everywhere for it. It might seem like just a very ordinary locket but it's the only thing I have that reminded me of my little sister. Loosing the locket felt like I lost the only part of her that I had.I never took that locket with me when I was going on missions for Vincenzo. I knew I was more likely to get into fights on such errands and I miss loose it. I've always been careful.I knew the only place I could have misplaced it was right here in this training room. I walked towards the boxing ring and searched the floor if it had dropped when the punching bag hit me on my face or when Vincenzo and I trained. That was when it hit me. What if it was with Vincenzo? I tried to think of what reason he could have to take off my locket without my knowing but I couldn't think of one. I ran my
