That night, the moon did not shine.
Black clouds covered the sky of Rawabengek Village. Only the dim light of oil lamps from a few houses glowed, as if afraid to make a sound. Alina ran. Her maroon kebaya was torn in several places. The hem caught on roots and branches. Thorns scratched her bare ankles. But the pain was nothing compared to the fear choking her throat. Behind her, she heard a raspy laugh. "Alina! Beautiful... keep running. I like it!" He taunted. That voice. Raka. The son of the richest landowner in the village. Since last Eid, his eyes had never left Alina's body. For three months she had been terrorized. Letters, gifts, even ambushing her at the well just to win Alina's love. Alina had said no. She had reported him to the village head. But who dared to stand against Raka's family? Because he was the ruler. "How long are you going to run, huh?!" Raka snarled. His footsteps pounded the earth, getting closer. Alina bit her lip until it bled. Her chest hurt. Her breath was ragged. She was a good girl. She prayed, helped her mother in the kitchen, never hurt anyone. But because of her face, because of the smile she once shared with everyone... now she was being hunted like an animal. And not just by Raka, but by his 10 henchmen too. "Help...! Someone please help me?!" she screamed, her voice breaking. "Hahaha, it's useless, Alina. We've surrounded you. The villagers are too scared of us," Raka said with a laugh. There was no answer. Doors were shut tight. Lamps went out one by one. Without thinking, Alina ran toward the forest. No one in the village would help her. Ahead was darkness. The Forbidden Forest. The elders had forbidden it. "Never go in there. At the bottom of that ravine lives a King. A King who is not human. Who thirsts for blood." But to die at their hands, or to die in the forest... Alina chose the forest. She forced her legs to move. Running through the bushes. Branches whipped her cheeks. Raka and his friends' footsteps drew nearer. She could feel their hot breath on her back. Then a rough hand yanked her hair from behind. Alina fell to the ground. "Catch her!" The world turned to chaos. Screams. Laughter. The last thing Alina remembered was pain, her clothes being torn, and darkness swallowing her consciousness. When she woke again, her whole body ached. Her clothes were in tatters. She was at the edge of a ravine. "Just throw her! Let it look like suicide!" Raka barked. Before Alina could scream, her body was shoved. SPLASH. The world spun. Her body was falling. A ravine. Dark. Cold that pierced her bones. The wind whistled past her ears. Alina closed her eyes, surrendering. _Mother... forgive Alina._ THUD! Her back hit something soft. Mossy earth. Pain shot through her entire body. Warmth flowed from her temple. Blood. It hurt. Darkness began to take over. But before everything faded... She felt it. Something touched her cheek. Not a human hand. Claws. Big. Rough. But the touch... strangely gentle. Heavy. And from the darkness, a pair of eyes lit up. Golden. Like liquid gold. Like a moon that had fallen to the bottom of the ravine. Big. Savage. Staring straight into her soul. The air trembled. A low growl sounded. Not a human language. Older. More primal. "Mine." One word. Not a question. Not a request. A statement. Those claws lifted Alina's unconscious body as if she weighed no more than a kitten. Above the ravine, Raka peered down. All he saw was darkness and a pair of golden eyes staring back at him. Raka and his friends screamed, then ran for their lives. At the bottom of the ravine, the last Tiger King carried his prey home. Not to eat her. But to claim her. --- *TO BE CONTINUED*The Skull Cave is fucking freezing. Not from the wind. But from the ground. From the stones that have drunk too much blood. From the pond in the middle with black water. At the bottom there’s a chest. It’s full of powder. One spark and this whole place blows. Including me.I’m the leader now. Of whatever’s left of the Wolves. Guiding the other beasts to join us. Foxes. Boars. Whatever’s desperate enough. There’s a leather map in front of me. Behind me, 7 people. The last Wolves who still follow me. Hired guns. Cowards. Just like me.It’s been 5 days since I sent Sera to poison the eastern river of the Tigers.“No word from Sera yet, Sir,” Garon said. His iron hand _clank clank_ every time he moved.I threw my cup at the wall. _Crash_.“Coward! He’s probably dead. Caught!”“Not necessarily, Sir,” someone else said. “Maybe he’s waiting for night.”I went quiet. My fingers drummed on the hilt of my knife.Draven.That name is poison.5 days ago I ran from the battlefield. Ran when I saw
This damn underground cage. Damp. Cold. And the smell... the smell of dried blood, wet dirt, and the smell of people who’ve already given up. Sera was hanging. Both wrists chained up high, so only the tips of his feet touched the ground. The other three were in the corner. Their muzzles gagged with leather so they couldn’t scream or bite their own tongues. Six hours. Six hours I’d been sitting here, listening to the rain outside that just wouldn’t quit. The door creaked open. Bayu walked in. The torch in his hand was shaking. His face was still wrapped in bandages. There were brown stains on his cheek. "The others talked, Your Majesty," he said. His breath was heavy. "The fox. Coward. He cracked first. Said their base is at Skull Cave. Northwest. A day’s walk from here." I nodded. My throat was dry. "And Sera?" Bayu shook his head. "Stone. Hasn’t said a word. Just keeps grinning." Alina had been beside me the whole time. Not sitting. Not leaning. Her eyes never left Sera for
The smell of blood was still stuck in my nose.It had been 5 days since that war. 5 days since Raka ran. The tiger den was quiet. Too quiet.I sat on a flat rock in front of the main tent. In my hand was a report from Bayu. Scratches on a piece of bark. `3 buried. 4 seriously wounded stable. Water in the eastern river tastes strange.`Strange.Alina came out of the tent. Her steps were still limping, but her back was straight again. Her face was pale. The fever only broke last night. "What does it say?" she asked. Her voice was still hoarse."The water in the eastern river tastes bitter," I answered. I crumpled the bark in my hand. "The healer said 2 tiger cubs threw up after drinking this morning."Alina tensed immediately. "Poison.""I was thinking the same."Silence. Only the sound of wind through the leaves."This is Raka’s doing," Alina whispered. Her eyes lit up. "Only 5 days as king, and he’s already playing dirty."I stood up. My ribs still hurt if I moved too fast. But
The rain wouldn’t stop.I ran. Didn’t look back.Behind me there were only corpses. The King’s corpse. The pack’s corpses. The corpse of my own pride.Mud splattered on my face with every step. Thorns tore at my calves until they bled. But I couldn’t stop. Stopping meant dying. Same as them."RAKA!"The Wolf King’s last roar still echoed in my head, so loud it hurt my eardrums. "TRAITOR!"Coward. Yeah, I’m a coward. But a coward who’s still breathing.I don’t know how long. Felt like a whole day. Lungs burning, legs shaking, breath about to give out. Finally my body gave out too. I collapsed under a huge tree with roots sticking out like claws. Panting. There was blood on my palms. Didn’t know whose. From far away, a howl. Long. Dragging.A mourning howl. It meant their king was dead.I laughed instead. My voice cracked. "Safe travels, my Lord," I muttered into the dark. "Thanks for teaching me one thing."How to survive. By being the most ruthless. That night I didn’t close my eyes a
Dawn hadn't come yet. There was only darkness.Thick darkness. The kind that made my eyes ache from forcing them to stay open.I stood at the edge of the ravine. Wind rose from below, carrying the smell of wet dirt and... wolves.A lot of them.Behind me, 12 tiger warriors crouched behind rocks. Weapons in hand. Holding their breath.Next to me, Alina. She wasn’t wearing armor. Just a plain black shirt, cloth pants, and a dagger at her waist.I’d changed the bandage on her shoulder 2 hours ago. White. Tight. But I knew the wound underneath was still throbbing with every breath she took."Ready?" I whispered. She didn’t look at me. Her eyes were locked straight ahead, into the dark forest."Been ready for 3 days," she answered. Her voice was cold. No tremor.Bayu was on my left. He held up 3 fingers. The signal. 3 more minutes.I closed my eyes. Just once. To gather everything. The rage. The pain. The emptiness of the last 3 nights. When I opened them again, there was only calculation
The rain wouldn’t stop. Not the normal kind. This was the kind of rain that crawled into your bones, turned the earth to mud, and made the smell of blood ten times worse.I was perched on the highest branch by the river. Twenty meters up. From here I could see everything. The wind carried the stench up to me. A stench that had been stuck in my nose for three nights straight.Three nights. Three nights since I’d slept more than ten minutes at a time. Three nights since I wrapped the last bandage around Alina’s shoulder. Three nights since I watched her lie there, biting back pain, while I bit my own lip so hard I tasted iron just to keep from screaming. My eyes burned. My head felt heavy. But one second of carelessness and we were all dead.Below, by the riverbank, were four young wolves. You could see their ribs. Their fur was matted. Their eyes were dull. These weren’t warriors. These were kids forced to hunt because the pack was already starving.Bait. Perfect bait.My
