MasukCHAPTER FOUR
He wasn't supposed to be here.
My mind repeated this thought uselessly, while my brain forgot to function.
Arla said he wasn't due till next Friday.
She was certain.
Painfully certain.
“Carlton doesn't deviate from schedules. He'll be back next Friday. You only need to answer the house phone if he calls.”
So what was going on here?
She'd said it so many times that I'd eventually believed her.
Now I wondered if she had ever known her husband at all.
Because standing before me was the one man who was supposed to be thousands of miles away.
Carlton Holland.
The husband I had spent the entire drive to the mansion convincing myself I would never have to meet.
My lungs forgot how to work.
Everything I'd memorized at the boutique—his call routines, the staff's names, where Arla kept her jewelry, which perfume she wore during the day and which one she wore at night—suddenly seemed laughably useless.
None of it had prepared me for him.
Carlton Holland stood a few feet away from me, damp skin glistening beneath muted amber glows. His towel hung dangerously low on narrow hips like decency was merely an afterthought.
Worst part?
He looked completely unbothered by my presence.
No shock. No suspicion.
Like this was a normal, everyday occurrence.
This did not feel normal to me. Not in the slightest.
“You look as though you've seen a ghost.”
I heard the sound of his voice before I heard the words—if that makes any sense.
Deep, rich timbre that sent jagged signals to my dying brain.
I swallowed hard.
I might as well be looking at one. Because, what was Arla's husband doing here?
She had said—REPETITIVELY— that he wouldn't return till next week.
“You…” My throat felt parched, and the words were hard to form. “You weren't due back until next Friday.”
One dark brow lifted slightly.
My heart drummed.
“Yes,” he shrugged. “Plans changed.”
Plans changed?
Just like that?
Two words?
Like he hadn't just single-handedly destroyed the only sane route in this whole absurd idea.
A thousand catastrophic thoughts crashed in my head all at once.
My pulse thrummed, and I felt heady.
Did Arla know? Did he suspect something? Was that why she hung up suddenly? Was I going to jail?
My mind chased one terrifying possibility after another.
Oh boy, I need to sit.
If he'd returned because he suspected his wife….
Wouldn't he notice immediately that I wasn't his wife?
I suddenly became aware of everything.
The dress I was wearing. Did it fit as it should?
The wedding ring on my finger.
The unfamiliar bedroom.
Even the way I was standing, was Arla's posture different?
Did she cross her arms?
Why hadn't I asked better questions?
Carlton disappeared into what I now realized was a walk-in closet.
Too relaxed.
Meanwhile, I was one heartbeat away from a proper cardiac arrest.
“I dislike Paris,” he said from the other room.
I stood paralyzed in that spot.
Paris?
“I've never understood why people romanticize it so much.”
Arla didn't even tell me where he had traveled to.
Had he told her details she never thought to pass on?
Was he testing me already?
I was done for!
He walked back into the room carrying neatly folded clothes. I watched every movement with exhausting concentration. He tossed the clothes on the bed.
“Why are you still standing there?” he asked.
My throat worked an answer, then…
He dropped the towel.
“Jesus Christ!”
Carlton stilled.
I slapped both hands over my face. I peeped, but he remained standing, stark naked.
“Oh my God—please put something on!” I shrieked.
“What exactly are you doing?” He asked, his tone sharp.
I kept my eyes shut, hands over my face.
“Could you not dress in front of me?!”
There was a little silence, but I could tell he hadn't moved.
“You're joking right?”
“No! I'm traumatized!”
He chuckled. The sound was low, amusing and unexpected.
What was funny? He just let me see his…oh my God!
“You’ve seen me naked countless times.”
Heat flooded my face violently I thought I'd combust into a red cloud.
Arla! Not me!
“Doesn't mean you should just…”
Wait a minute!
I was supposed to be Arla. Which means…
But this wasn't part of the plan! I was to answer when he called, play Mrs Holland, not seen his…
I peeped through my fingers.
Oh my God!
Why was he walking towards me!
Panic surged through me.
“Arla.”
Something about the way he said her name made my stomach churn.
It wasn't affectionate.
It was observant.
If he hadn't discovered our little ploy, then I was about to blow the lid off.
“You're acting strange.”
Think!
Ellesmere. THINK!
“I'm tired!” I blurted out without thought.
Stupid.
“We've known every inch of our bodies for the past two years,” he continued.
I stepped back instinctively.
I was really messing things up, but it couldn't be helped.
“What's the sudden issue?”
My pulse became defeaning.
I was acting out, and he had the right to be suspicious.
A wife didn't react this way to her husband.
Yet, I couldn't stop backing away, and he didn't stop coming close.
“Please…please just wear something…change somewhere else.”
He stopped suddenly.
Was it over?
I looked up at his face.
Then he broke into a soft laugh.
Dread crawled up behind my neck.
“A new game?” he asked.
What?
“Roleplaying? Is that what we're doing now?”
Fear lodged inside my throat.
Then, he moved suddenly.
Fast.
A shriek escaped me before I could stop it, and the next thing I knew, my back hit the bed.
Carlton pinned me down with his weight, one hand gripped my wrists, pinning them above my head and the other rested beside my head like an anchor so his weight didn't crush me.
Fear froze my body beneath him.
God.
Up close, he was devastatingly beautiful.
Cool skin. The smell of scented body wash clung to his skin. Grey eyes sharp like Katana. I felt him everywhere. And his…oh well…
My eyes shuttered tightly.
“Look at me,” he said quietly.
I couldn't. I didn't dare to.
My heart thrummed hard within its cages.
“Look at me.”
The command came softer this time.
Yet, more dangerous.
My lashes trembled, and fluttered open on their own.
Carlton stared at me silently.
Fear kept me locked under his scrutiny.
One second.
Two seconds.
Three…
“Shit!”
For the first time since he walked out of the bathroom, he looked genuinely surprised.
I was done for.
“You almost had me fooled.”
CHAPTER FIFTEEN Two days. That was all the time the Dowager had given me to fit in the original Arla Holland mold. And I spent the most of it memorising the Hollands, and donor names off a seating chart Mrs Timothy had helped me curate. And when I wasn't trying to be Arla, I enjoyed the luxury of one of the largest in-house library I'd ever seen. One of the staff had done the favour of prattling about the gala gossip, who did what and who didn't. Unfortunately, she didn't know about the beef between the Ashcroft and Whitefields. Now, I was about to find out.The Holland estate made the mansion look modest. The moment Carlton's car slid through the wrought-iron gates, I knew I had imagined it all wrong. Wealth. Luxury. Influence. A family home. The driveway curved through acres of manicured gardens where marble statues stood beneath ancient oaks, their branches casting restless shadows across perfectly trimmed hedges. Beyond them, fountains glittered beneath the fading eveni
CHAPTER FOURTEEN I woke up to the faint sound of running water. The room was dark, lit only by the soft wash of moonlight spilling through the floor-to-ceiling windows. For a few seconds, I simply lay there, listening. The quiet hum of the air conditioner. The faint trickle of water from the gardens below. The deep, almost unsettling silence of the estate.I closed my eyes again.Dinner replayed itself with merciless clarity. The Dowager's eyes. Her questions. Her impossible composure. The correspondence bluff. Then the annual family dinner.I pulled the duvet higher. If tonight had taught me anything, it was that Carlton wasn't the greatest threat to this ridiculous charade. His mother was.The running water stopped.A moment later, the bathroom door opened. Steam drifted into the bedroom, and light spilled across the polished wooden floor in a large strip.Light footsteps treaded the room. Carlton.Apparently, I'd developed a sixth sense for Carlton Holland's footsteps somewhere
CHAPTER THIRTEEN I was living proof that miracles existed.Carlton's mother had successfully sucked up every ounce of oxygen from the mansion, yet I was still breathing. The moment I got upstairs, I had dialled Arla over and over again. Yet, the automated response persisted. The number you're trying to call…I was in trouble.Dinner with Carlton and the woman who raised him spelt my end. There was no way I wouldn't be caught once I joined that table. Once again, I contemplated running away.Arla could deal with her mess. However, my feet refused to make it past the bedroom door. Thoughts of what would happen to my mother if I ran away held me bound.A sister who was willing to use her mother to blackmail her own sister couldn't care less about a mother she'd abandoned for eleven years when it came to saving her own skin.I sat holed up in Arla's bedroom, praying that time slowed. Thoughts of reading a good book in the library over some biscuits and drinks were now farfetched.Time, ap
CHAPTER TWELVE Carlton's mother is here? What did I do to deserve this amount of karma? Why would Arla's mother-in-law visit today of all days?"What do you mean Carlton's mother is here?"Mrs Timothy smoothed invisible creases in front of her dress.Very odd."She arrived just a few minutes after you left the house. There was no way we could have known she was coming," she said.God, what am I going to do now?ARLA!I hope you come down with something terrible enough to ruin your trip.Carlton wasn't even home.Blast that caller's timing! Now, I was all alone. How do I face someone that's got even the stern, overly composed Mrs Timothy fidgeting?"It's best we do not keep her waiting, you know she's got … a temper," Mrs Timothy said.I know?I knew nothing!Every instinct screamed at me to run. That was the best approach at this point.I've barely pulled off tricking the whole staff into believing I was my cold, composed and calculative sister. How do I intend to do it with someone
CHAPTER ELEVEN The city drifted past the tinted windows of Carlton's car in streaks of white and gold, lights dissolved into long ribbons against the evening traffic. Across from us, our driver sat ramrod straight, his attention fixed on the road ahead.Beside me, Carlton seemed perfectly at ease.As though the afternoon had been nothing more than another business appointment.I stole a glance at him.His tie was gone. The first two buttons of his shirt had been left undone, softening the severe image he usually carried. One arm rested lazily along the back of the seat behind me, close enough for me to feel its warmth without actually touching me.I shifted.A dull ache reminded me exactly why that had been a terrible idea.Heat climbed stubbornly up my neck.God.What was wrong with me?I pressed my thighs together, hoping to silence the lingering ache between them.It didn't help. How did I move from being exposed to seducing and sleeping with my sister's husband for the third time
CHAPTER TEN The moment Carlton's lips crashed on mine, my world tilted on its axis. A quiver rippled through me, followed by a violent surge of desire. It was not a gentle thing, not a testing brush of lips. There was no careful pause to see whether I would pull away. He came at me with a certainty that made my pulse kick hard against my ribs, and for one stunned second I forgot the point of all this. I forgot the rehearsed lie. I forgot that I had touched him with a plan, with a purpose, with the thinly disguised intent to keep him busy and his questions asleep.I had meant to seduce him into silence.Stop his wheels from turning, that was all. A distraction. A tactic. A way to keep him from noticing what did not belong or fit, from looking too closely at the shape of my face and the edges of my voice. But the instant he touched me, that careful plan began to unravel.I had underestimated the power Carlton had over my body. He tasted like heat and impatience and something that fe
