CHAPTER FIVE

Amelia stared at the scroll for over an hour. Every fiber of her being told her it was a trap, but the logic of the dead soldier outweighed her fear. She dressed in leather armor, gripped her sword, and rode out under the cover of a New Moon.

The Whispering Gorge was a narrow canyon where the wind created eerie, flute-like sounds against the rocks. Lucien was already there, leaning against a jagged pillar of stone, looking as effortless and arrogant as the day they met.

"You came," he said, his voice echoing.

"Don't mistake necessity for desire," Amelia replied, keeping her distance. "Why am I here, Lucien?"

"I suspect we are both being lied to," Lucien said, pushing off the stone. "My people are dying. Not by the hand of your wolves, but by something that mimics them."

Amelia stiffened. "The soldiers I found dead, the bite marks were wrong. They weren't yours."

Lucien’s expression softened slightly. "Then we have a common enemy. Someone is deliberately slaughtering our kind and leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that leads directly to the other's door. They want a war, Amelia. They want us to annihilate each other while they watch from the sidelines."

"Why?" Amelia asked. "Who benefits from a war between vampires and werewolves?"

"

Those who fear us both," Lucien replied. "There are factions in the shadows—ancient things that find our existence an affront to the natural order."

Amelia looked at him, searching for a lie in those violent eyes. "I don't trust you."

"Good," Lucien said with a ghost of a smile. "Trust is for the naive. I am offering you an alliance of convenience. We find the killer, we stop the slaughter, and then we can go back to hating each other in peace."

Amelia opened her mouth to respond, but a sudden, sharp whistle sliced through the air.

"Get down!" Lucien roared.

He moved with a blur of speed, his body slamming into hers and knocking her flat against the rocky ground. A black-feathered arrow hissed through the space where Amelia’s head had been a second before, embedding itself deep into the stone wall behind them.

Amelia gasped, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at the arrow, noticing a viscous, bubbling black substance coating the tip.

"Did you see that?" she whispered, her voice shaking.

"Stay still," Lucien commanded, his body shielding hers, his scent—cedar and old parchment—wrapping around her and her panicked wolf slowly quietened and whispered "our mate is protecting us", but Amelia didn't it give it much thought. Maybe later.

A second arrow flew, then a third. Lucien intercepted one with his bare hand, the shaft snapping under his grip. He snarled, his fangs extending, his eyes glowing with a predatory light.

"They knew exactly where we would be," Amelia realized, her mind racing. "They didn't just want us to fight. They wanted us dead."

Lucien stood up, pulling Amelia with him. He picked up the first arrow, sniffing the black substance. He immediately recoiled, his face twisting in disgust.

"This scent..." Lucien murmured. "It's impossible. This is Shadow-Rot."

"What is Shadow-Rot?" Amelia asked.

"An ancient poison," Lucien explained, his voice grim. "It was used by the Order of the Void, a cult of zealots who sought to purge the world of all supernatural blood. They were believed to have been wiped out five centuries ago."

Amelia felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. "You're saying a ghost cult is murdering our people?"

"I'm saying the enemy we thought we knew is a distraction," Lucien said.

Over the next few days, the uneasy alliance became a necessity. They met in secret, sharing intelligence and tracking the movements of the attackers. The tension between them was a living thing, a taut wire that threatened to snap at any moment.

Amelia hated how her body responded to him. Every time their hands brushed while examining a map, a spark of electricity surged through her, a reminder of the bond they had rejected.

"Stop looking at me like that," Amelia snapped during one of their meetings in a secluded cave.

"Like what?" Lucien asked, a smirk playing on his lips.

"Like you're trying to figure out if I taste like cinnamon or rage."

"Actually, it's more of a wild honey and ozone scent," Lucien replied, stepping closer. "And for the record, the rage is the most attractive part."

Amelia rolled her eyes, but her heart skipped a beat. "You are an insufferable narcissist."

"And you are a stubborn brat with a chip on her shoulder the size of a mountain," he countered.

Despite the bickering, something was changing. The broken bond, though severed, had left a psychic bridge between them. One evening, as they sat in silence watching the perimeter, Amelia felt a sudden wave of crushing loneliness wash over her. It wasn't her own.

She looked at Lucien. He was staring at the horizon, his expression distant and hollow. The emotion was so potent it made her chest ache. She felt the weight of his centuries—the boredom, the loss, the absolute isolation of being a king with no equals.

Lucien turned to her, his eyes wide. "You... you felt that?"

"The loneliness," Amelia whispered. "I felt it."

Lucien looked away, his jaw tightening. "It is the price of immortality."

In return, Lucien felt a surge of grief ripple through Amelia. He saw a flash of a man with a booming laugh and strong arms—her father. He felt the jagged edge of her fear, the terror of being a young Alpha in a world that wanted to see her fail.

"He loved you," Lucien said softly. "Your father."

Amelia stiffened, a tear escaping and rolling down her cheek. "How do you know?"

"Because I can feel the hole he left in you," Lucien replied.

For the first time, the hatred felt thin, like a veil that was beginning to tear. Amelia reached out, her fingers grazing his forearm. Lucien didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned into the touch, his eyes searching hers.

"We shouldn't," Amelia whispered.

"I know," Lucien breathed.

Amelia returned to Mooncrest and began searching the forbidden archives beneath the castle—a place her father had warned her never to enter until she was ready.

Deep in the dust-choked vaults, she found a leather-bound book wrapped in silver chains. The pages were vellum, yellowed with age, and the ink was a deep, dried crimson.

Amelia flipped through the pages, her eyes widening as she found a passage written in an ancient tongue.

"When the Moon’s Alpha and the Night’s King are bound by blood and fate, the balance of the world shall hold. But heed the warning: should the bond be severed by choice, the Void shall awaken. The rejected bond is the key; the heartbreak of the fated is the door. One shall fall so the other may rise, and the enemy they feared shall become the shadow that consumes them both."

Amelia dropped the book, the heavy thud echoing through the vault.

"Oh, god," she whispered, her voice trembling.

The prophecy was clear. Their rejection hadn't just been a personal choice—it had been a catalyst. By rejecting Lucien, she hadn't saved her people; she had opened the door for the very enemy they were now fighting.

The bond wasn't just a romantic tie. It was a seal. And she had broken it.

CHAPTER NINEAMELIA’S POV“The Queen's blood remembers. The King's heart will pay.”The words followed me long after the whisper faded, settling into my mind like a curse I couldn't shake. I walked beside Lucien through the moonlit forest, my fingers still intertwined with his, while Cassian led us along a narrow path concealed beneath thick vines. Every few steps, I glanced at the silver mark on my palm, wondering what it meant and why the ancient power inside me seemed to recognize a warning meant for someone else.Lucien noticed my uneasiness. “You're thinking about what the voice said.”“I'm thinking about everything,” I replied. “My father's lies, the Order of the Void, the seals, and the fact that you apparently have a heart that can be used as payment for something neither of us understands.”His mouth tightened. “My heart has survived centuries. I doubt a whisper in the forest will be the thing that destroys it.”“That's a very confident thing to say for someone who nearly col

CHAPTER EIGHTAMELIA’S POV“Hello, Amelia. I've been waiting for you to find your king.”For several seconds, I couldn't breathe. The silver-haired man stood between the trees as though he had every right to be there, his elegant dark coat untouched by the wind and his pale face illuminated by the moonlight. He looked exactly as I remembered him from the few childhood memories I had buried deep inside my mind. The sharp cheekbones, the cold gray eyes, and the thin scar running from the corner of his mouth toward his jaw were unmistakable.Lord Cassian Veyne. The man my father had sworn he killed twenty years ago.My fingers tightened around the hilt of my sword. Beneath my skin, my wolf stirred violently, her instincts screaming that the man before us was dangerous. Yet beneath that warning was something else, something almost like recognition.“How?” The word escaped my lips before I could stop it. “You’re dead.”Cassian smiled, and the expression sent a chill down my spine. “Is that

  • THE VAMPIRE'S ALPHA QUEEN    The Thing Beneath the earth

CHAPTER SEVENAMELIA'S POVThe eyes beneath the earth were not human, nor were they anything I had ever encountered in my years as a werewolf. They glowed with a sickly silver light, illuminating the cracks spreading across the forest floor. A foul smell rose from the opening, something between rotting flesh and burnt wood, and my wolf retreated so abruptly inside my mind that I felt her fear as sharply as my own.Amelia, run.I had never heard her sound so frightened. The masked strangers stood around the clearing as though they had been waiting for this moment their entire lives. None of them seemed concerned about the thing awakening beneath our feet. If anything, they looked pleased."What have you done?" I demanded, tightening my grip on my sword. The one who had spoken earlier turned toward me. "What your kind has spent centuries preventing."Lucien moved in front of me, his body tense and his fangs fully extended. "You have five seconds to tell me what is beneath this forest be

I wanted to believe there was another explanation, some missing passage that would prove I had misunderstood everything. But the ancient writing remained unchanged, its crimson ink dark against the yellowed pages.I had rejected the Vampire King because I believed I was protecting my people. I had watched seven of my soldiers lie dead in the forest, their blood drained from their bodies, and I had blamed his kind.
