LIAM

I pulled into the driveway just past eight. The dashboard lights threw a soft blue glow across the interior, catching on the bags of Thai takeout sitting beside me like peace offerings. Or maybe guilt offerings. Probably both.

I don’t know why I thought bringing her favorite food would make a difference. Like pad Thai and spring rolls could patch the mess I’d made with silence and too many unspoken things.

She used to light up at the mention of Thai.

Back when we stayed up talking on her front steps until the sky hinted at sunrise. Before I made everything complicated.

I sat there for a while, fingers clamped tight around the steering wheel, like if I let go, everything inside me would fall apart.

The engine hummed under me. The neighborhood was quiet. I could see our porch light from here…still off. That did something sharp to my chest.

I didn’t want to walk into that quiet house. But I also didn’t want to sit out here like some lovesick loser waiting on a sign from the stars. S

JESSICAI jolted awake like someone had yanked me out of a dream and slammed me back into reality. Not soft. Not slow.My heart pounded against my ribs, too loud, too fast. Machines beeped in protest, blinking at me like I’d startled them too.My eyes darted around the pale room. White sheets. Pale blue curtains. A soft but sterile glow from the ceiling light. The distant smell of antiseptic."Hospital," I murmured, my throat dry and scratchy like I’d swallowed sandpaper.I turned my head and saw him—Liam. His head rested near my hand on the bed, his eyes still closed, like he’d been holding my hand in his sleep. He looked... tired. Not his usual polished self. His shirt was wrinkled, and his tie hung loose around his neck. His stubble had come in, just enough to make him look scruffy. My scruffy husband.I stared at him, heart tight and confused. He hadn’t just dropped by. He’d stayed. With shaky fingers, I reached out and brushed his hair back, soft and thick. His brows pinched, his

LIAMAfter her mom said they’d come back tomorrow, the room finally settled. The noise quieted. The tension pulled back like a tide.Ava gave Jess one last hug, lingering. Then she threw a glance over her shoulder—long, thoughtful, and sharp. It said a hundred things without saying a word.Curious.Suspicious.Maybe even amused.Like she saw something neither of us was saying. Like she knew. And then… it was just me and Jess.I pulled the chair closer to her bed, careful, like she might break if I breathed too loud. Then I sat down and really looked at her.Pale. Still. Hooked up to machines that beeped and blinked like cruel reminders of how close I came to losing her.Still beautiful. Still Jessica.Still my wife. That word—wife—still hits weird. Foreign and too familiar all at once. Like it belonged to a different version of me. A braver one. A more hopeful one.I hated seeing her like this. The oxygen tube. The IV drip. The hospital gown.I hated it all.But most of all? I hated t

JESSICAMy head felt like it had been stuffed with cotton and left out in the rain. Heavy. Fuzzy. Every thought moved like sludge.I tried to move my fingers, but they didn’t listen. Breathing felt like work. Thinking? A disaster.Voices floated around me—sharp, muffled, almost like I was underwater. I couldn’t place where I was, or why everything felt like it had been pulled apart and stitched back wrong.“Liam?” I barely whispered it, not even sure if it was real or just a dream I wanted too much. The moment his name passed my lips, everything shifted. The haze fractured. My eyelids dragged open like someone had tied bricks to them, but somehow, I managed to blink through the blur just enough to catch the shape of the room. Cold. White. Hospital. And them.Liam. And Lucas. Both standing at the edge of my hospital bed. Both staring at each other like one more breath would be the one to set everything on fire.Liam looked like he hadn’t slept in a year. His hair was messy, like he’d r

LIAM“I’m sorry, but that shade of grey is not going to work,” the woman across the table snapped, tapping her perfectly manicured nail against the mock-up board like it had personally offended her. “It’s too... sterile.”I blinked once. Twice.Sterile?Lady, it’s grey. It doesn’t have emotions.Still, I nodded, expression neutral, pen poised like I actually intended to take her input seriously. “Noted. We’ll adjust accordingly.”Noted, sure. I noted that you’ve clearly been watching too much HGTV and think your Pinterest board is a personality trait. The three clients sat in front of me—two women who looked like they lived off green juice, judgment, and daily affirmations written in gold cursive, and one man who hadn’t looked up from his phone in forty-five minutes. Every once in a while, he muttered “uh-huh” like that counted as participation. They all nodded like I was their intern. Like I hadn’t spent the last two years dragging this company out of the grave my mother left behind.

JESSICAI stumbled into the office bathroom like I’d just survived a war zone. The harsh fluorescent lights flickered above, humming like they were mocking me. My heels clicked against the tiles in uneven steps until I reached the sink. The cold porcelain was the only thing keeping me upright as I gripped the edge with white-knuckled hands. I leaned in, pressing my palms down hard, grounding myself. My reflection stared back—pale, hollow-eyed, barely holding it together. My mascara had smudged slightly beneath one eye, and my lips... they were still a little swollen, like they were holding onto yesterday’s memory. That kiss.Liam’s kiss.I closed my eyes for a second, just to breathe, just to not see myself. But it didn’t help. His mouth was still on mine; the feel of it was seared into me like a secret brand. His hands. His voice. The way he’d looked at me like I was both his mistake and miracle in the same breath. My heart hasn’t slowed down since.I opened my eyes again and whisper
