My prenatal vitamins clinked around in my purse as I struggled with my keys. Being eight months pregnant made even simple stuff feel like a marathon. Dr. Martinez had let me leave my appointment early—said everything looked great, smiling in that way that always made me feel secure. She said the baby was doing well and positioned just right, and I was dilated enough that she might show up a week or two early.

"Just in time for Daddy's birthday," I told my belly on the way home, thinking about how Mikel would react when I gave him the news. Three years into our marriage, and he still got super excited talking about our baby girl.

The house was strangely quiet when I pushed open the front door. Usually, I could hear Mrs. Chen humming in the kitchen or Mikel in a conference call from his office. But today, total silence.

"Mikel?" I called out, dropping my keys into the crystal bowl by the door. "I'm home!"

Nothing. His Maserati was outside, so he had to be here. Maybe he was in his study with his headphones on, working like always. I smiled, even though I was tired—my workaholic husband would be thrilled the doctor thought she'd come early.

The baby kicked hard, reminding me of the chocolate croissants I'd promised to get from our bakery. I'd forgotten all about them, too excited to share the news. The pregnancy brain was getting worse every day.

"Sorry, little one," I said to my stomach, rubbing where her foot was pushing against my ribs. "Mommy got distracted thinking about Daddy."

I walked up the marble stairs slowly, holding onto the rail. Sunlight streamed through the windows on the second floor, making shapes on the wooden floor. Our bedroom door was shut, which was weird—Mikel almost always left it open during the day.

I heard soft sounds coming from the room. Mumbled voices. A woman giggling, but it definitely wasn't Mrs. Chen.

My heart skipped. It sounded like Sophia. But that couldn't be right. My best friend from college was supposed to be in meetings all day.

My brain tried to think of reasons. Maybe she'd stopped by to drop something off for the baby shower she was planning. Or maybe they were talking about secret details and wanted privacy. Maybe—

Then I heard something that made my blood run cold. A low groan that I knew after three years of marriage. Followed by my name, but not the way Mikel usually said it. This was rough, desperate, wrong.

No. No, no, no.

My hands shook as I reached for the doorknob. I wanted to run, to save myself, to keep whatever innocence I had left. But my heart was already breaking, and I needed to see what was destroying it.

The door opened without a sound.

My world ended right there.

In our bed—the bed where we'd been intimate last week, where we talked about our baby, where I'd spent mornings tracing shapes on Mikel's chest—my husband was with my best friend.

Sophia's long black hair was all over my pillow. Her skin was shiny with sweat as she moved above Mikel like she knew exactly what she was doing. This wasn't a mistake. It had been going on for a while.

Mikel's hands—the same hands that had touched my belly this morning, that had put together our daughter's crib so carefully—were holding Sophia's hips tightly. His eyes were closed, and he whispered things I thought only I heard.

"God, Sophie, I've missed this. I've missed you."

Those words hit me hard. Missed this. How long? How many times had I kissed him after he had touched her? How many lies had I believed?

I must have made a noise because Sophia's eyes snapped open and met mine. For a second, everything stopped. Her eyes went wide, but there was also a look of satisfaction. Like she had planned this.

"Bella." She said my name like it was a bad word.

Mikel's body went stiff. He turned toward the door, toward me, and I saw him understand what was happening. He looked shocked, then guilty, and then—the worst of all—he looked almost angry, like he had been waiting for this to happen.

He didn't try to cover himself or make excuses. He just stared at me like he had been ready for this.

"How long?" I asked, my voice rough.

Sophia slid off Mikel, not even trying to cover herself. She'd always been pretty—tall and thin while I was softer, and confident. Now, I realized how dumb I'd been to think Mikel would be happy with just me.

"Bella, it's not" Mikel started, but Sophia stopped him.

"Long enough," she said, sounding pleased. "Long enough for us to know we should have been together all along."

The room started to spin. All along. Before our wedding? Maybe during our engagement. How many memories were ruined now? How many times had they laughed at me?

"The baby," I said, holding my stomach.

"Will be fine," Mikel said, sounding calm. "We'll make sure she has everything she needs."

*We'll make sure.* Like they were already a family. Like I was just in the way.

"How could you?" I whispered. "Both of you. How could you do this to me? To our family?"

Sophia almost looked sorry for me. "Oh, honey. Did you really think this perfect life would last? Mikel was with me first. I introduced you two, remember? I let you have him then, but some things are meant to be."

*Let you have him.* Like my marriage was something she had given me and now wanted back.

A contraction hit me hard, starting in my back and wrapping around my belly. I bent over, grabbing the doorframe.

"Bella?" Mikel sounded worried now, but I couldn't look at him. I couldn't stand seeing him with her scent still on his skin.

"No," I said, knowing what was happening. "Not now. Not like this."

But my daughter didn't care. The shock, the anger, the fact that everything I thought was real was a lie—it made my body do something without me thinking. I needed to protect her, to get away, to bring her into a world that had just shown me how awful it could be.

Another contraction hit, even harder, and my water broke. Three weeks early, in the doorway of my ruined marriage, with my husband and best friend watching the mess I was in.

"Oh God," I whispered, sliding down the doorframe. "She's coming. The baby's coming."

The last thing I saw before I blacked out was Mikel jumping out of bed, naked and scared, reaching for me like he could undo what I'd seen. Like he could change what had just wrecked everything.

But some betrayals can't be fixed.

And some disasters leave nothing but ruins.

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 35: The School Incident

The call came at 2:43 PM. I was in my office, going over those boring reports. Maya sounded freaked out but was trying to keep it together."Bella, it's Westwood Academy. Something happened to Emma."My stomach dropped. "What happened?""Some woman tried to get to her during playtime. Security stopped her, but Emma's asking for you."I already had my keys and jacket. "Call Mikel, tell him to meet me there, ASAP.""He's already on his way."That drive to Emma's school felt like forever. Traffic was awful, and I kept thinking of the worst things that could happen. Someone trying to grab my kid? After Thomas's threats, and us finding out we were being watched, it was like someone actually got to Emma. When I got to Westwood, Mikel was already there. I found him in the principal's office, talking to Mrs. Henderson. He looked pretty shaken, but he was trying to stay calm."Mommy!" Emma ran at me the second I walked in and hugged me super tight.I knelt down, checking her over. "You okay, s

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 34: The Next Move

A silver Mercedes rolled into the Marriott's parking garage downtown right at 3 PM – exactly when Thomas Romano wanted. Sophia Chen was behind the wheel, a little shaky, watching the older guy get out of a black car a few spaces down.Thomas looked every bit the big-shot businessman at 68. Perfect silver hair, an expensive suit hiding how frail he was getting, and a gold watch catching the light. But Sophia knew how to read the coldness in his eyes – so different from Elena's warm ones."You look awful," he said as they sat down in a quiet corner of the hotel restaurant. "When did you last sleep?""Kind of hard when your life's falling apart," Sophia shot back, stirring sugar into coffee she didn't even want. "They had breakfast together this morning. All three of them. Like some perfect family."Thomas didn't react much, but Sophia saw his eyes tighten a bit. "Tell me about it.""Mikel made pancakes. Dolphin-shaped for the kid. Bella laughed – actually laughed – at something he said.

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 33: Morning Routines

The smell of coffee woke me up early at 6:15 AM, even though the machine was set for 6:30. I stayed in bed for a bit, hearing quiet sounds from downstairs – cabinets opening, the fridge humming, someone moving around.Mikel.The thought made my stomach flip in a way I wasn't ready to think about. He was up making coffee, probably trying to help with Emma's morning routine without me even asking. My phone buzzed. Another text from a weird number. I knew the drill by now. Any happy moment always brought on a new wave of creepy messages.*Aww, cute morning. He's trying so hard to be the perfect husband again. Too bad you know what he can really do.*I trashed it without reading more. Sophia was getting sneakier, trying to mess with me. She wasn't just making threats anymore; she was trying to make me doubt every good thing with Mikel. But I wasn't going to let her ruin this morning.I found him in the kitchen, already dressed, hair wet from the shower. He was staring into the fridge like

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 32: Family Dinner

Garlic and herbs scented the kitchen as I stirred the sauce. Outside, I watched Mikel help Emma build a fairy house out of leaves. Their laughter floated in, and for a second, it felt like the past five years were just a nightmare.Even though I loved the scene, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. The creepy messages hadn't stopped since Mikel moved into the guest house. If anything, they were worse, like our happiness was driving someone nuts."Mommy, Daddy says dinner smells amazing!" Emma yelled, bursting in, her face red from the cold air."Oh, does he?" I smiled, hugging her. "And what do you think?""It smells like home," she said, hitting me right in the heart.Mikel came in, shaking leaves off his sweater. "Sorry, I got her a little excited. We found the perfect spot for the fairy house.""It's by the big oak tree," Emma said importantly. "Daddy says fairies are like old trees 'cause they have more stories."I looked at Mikel, seeing the same wonder I felt. These we

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 31: Living Arrangements

The drive home from the hospital was way different than the mad dash we'd made six hours before. Emma was out like a light in her car seat; her new meds were already helping with the pain. Mikel and I sat up front, trying to sort out Dr. Chen's instructions."Every four hours," I mumbled, checking the med schedule on my phone. "Even through the night.""I'll do the night shifts," Mikel said right away. "You've been doing this on your own for weeks. You need to sleep."I glanced at him in the dim light, noticing how determined he looked. A part of me wondered if Sophia was still out there, watching us, keeping track of how close we were getting for whatever crazy reason she was doing this."Mikel, you don't have to. I can handle it—""Bella." He said, "Dr. Chen made it clear. Emma needs both of her parents involved, and she needs to feel safe. It's not about what we can do by ourselves anymore; it's about what's best for our girl."*Our daughter*. That phrase still gave me a jolt, but

  • THE WIFE WHO STOLE HIS HEART   Chapter 30: Emma's Sick Again

The phone rang at 3:47 AM, waking us up after a pretty good day. Emma's cry on the baby monitor wasn't her usual bad dream—she sounded really upset, and Mikel and I shot up.I got to her room first. She was bent over in bed, holding her stomach and crying."Mommy, it hurts," she said, shaking. "It hurts a lot."Mikel came in, hair all messed up, but he was immediately focused. He saw Emma's pale face and went for his jacket."Hospital," he said, and I grabbed Emma.As we were leaving, I got a text from the same weird number that had been bugging us: *Kids get sick when they're stressed. Too bad when they suffer.*I was scared, but Emma's crying was more important. We'd deal with Sophia later—right now, Emma needed a doctor. The drive to Seattle Children's Hospital felt super long. Emma was quiet against my shoulder, and Mikel drove fast but carefully. His hands were tight on the wheel, but he talked to Emma calmly."You'll be okay, princess. The doctors will fix you.""Is it the same
