Kaelen’s POV

George looked like he could pass out at any moment. He occasionally stared upwards, as though staring at someone, which meant Cassien must be there.

I clenched my fists trying to stop myself from going to him, but I couldn’t any more than two minutes. I rushed forward, under the rain, but a few steps in and someone yanked me back, and my back hit the pillar at the side.

“What do you think you are doing?” Cassien asked, eyes blazing with something I couldn’t read.

Kaelen’s POVGeorge looked like he could pass out at any moment. He occasionally stared upwards, as though staring at someone, which meant Cassien must be there.I clenched my fists trying to stop myself from going to him, but I couldn’t any more than two minutes. I rushed forward, under the rain, but a few steps in and someone yanked me back, and my back hit the pillar at the side.“What do you think you are doing?” Cassien asked, eyes blazing with something I couldn’t read.“He’s hurt. Hasn’t he been punished enough?” I said, glancing at George.Cassien grabbed my chin, moving my head back to him. “I don’t plan to kill him,” he said.I felt relieved at that. “Thank you,” I said, trying to get to George, but he pulled me back.“Just because I didn’t plan to kill him doesn’t mean I didn’t want to take him to the brink of death,” he said, and my heart skipped a beat.“He is apologetic, that should be enough,” I said.“Apologetic or not, he chose to

Cassien’s POV“You’ll kill him,” Riven said beside me, hand on the backrest of the chair I sat on.Both our eyes went to the man who lay on a bench with a plank meeting his back with force under the pouring rain. His clothes were torn and soaked with blood and rain. His screams were loud and irritating to my ears. “Pretending doesn’t kill,” I said.Riven narrowed his eyes at George, bringing it back to me. “You think he’s faking it?” Asher joined us.“He’s bleeding all over. How could he fake that?” he added. He was indeed bleeding. The poodle around the bench was more of his blood than the rain. Yet, that wasn’t enough to convince me. That high pitch scream was not one of pain.“He can’t fake being in pain. He isn’t,” I said.I couldn’t see most of his face since he had it lowered, but I could tell he was more focused on something else. For the first few minutes he kept it all in and then he increased his screams. I had a feeling he wan

Kaelen’s POVMy lips parted, but I shut them the next second. My mind screamed at me to deny this, but that would only hurt George. I couldn’t leave him alone at such a time.It wasn’t his fault, and truly, there wasn’t anyone to blame for this.“Please do not kill him,” I finally found words. For a split second, I saw Cassien grind his jaw, but it disappeared as though it were an illusion. “Are you pleading for him to remain alive despite going against an important rule?” Cassien asked.“I know the gravity of what he did and what I’m asking. He’s new and-”“More reason for him to be punished. A warning to the others,” he said.“Please.” I stepped closer, locking eyes with him.Silence fell on us as my heart raced despite Cassien showing no expression. “You lost the fight.” He broke the silence. “Your one chance to keep him alive.”“We can go again,” I said even though my wolf growled at me.I wasn’t ready. To be honest, I wanted to shut my ey

Kaelen’s POV“A simple no would have sufficed,” Cassien said, hand around the spear that now found root in his chest. My heart raced in my chest, and my eyes widened at his bleeding chest. He pulled the blade out of his skin with no reaction, but my heart sank.More blood oozed out, soaking his shirt. I placed a hand over it trying to put pressure to stop the bleeding, panicked. “As much as I appreciate you being worried about me, I’m fine,” he said.“But you-”He pulled my hand away from his chest, and aside from the torn patch on the shirt and the blood, there was no sign of injury. I raised my eyes to his face and then back to his chest. No scratch. Not even a scar.“You heal fast,” I said, finally pulling away from him, taking a few steps back.“You are lucky or you would have been beheaded for killing the Alpha King,” he said.

Kaelen’s POV“What?” I frowned. That gentle gaze returned, the very one he had when Sterling had brought him in. I didn’t understand it at the time, and in a way it scared me, but now I understood, and my fear was nowhere close to being gone.“I love you, General.”He took a step forward, and I took one backwards. “General, I…” he paused, nodding. “I know that I’m not supposed to have such feelings for you. I did suppress it, and nobody is going to know, I promise,” he said.I opened my mouth, but no words left it. I stared at him for the longest and the more I did, the more I realized he wasn’t playing some type of prank on me.He was telling the truth.I scoffed, and then it migrated to laughter. “This was a dream, right? I’m dreaming,” I said, turning to Hazel, who looked mortified, confirming what I had just heard.Once again, I tried to speak to him, but I found nothing. I couldn’t take it any longer and left the room.I was filled with regre

Kaelen’s POV“Careful, my lady,” Hazel said as she helped me out of the bed.“I can handle it, Hazel,” I said.“You need to take it slow.”“It’s just a little injury on my leg, and it’s healed.”“You still need to be careful.”“Would you join me on the battlefield? I need to be strong, Hazel. Not pampered. I wouldn’t be able to prove everyone wrong if I don’t.”“Do you really? Your records speak for themselves, and the Fang pack has been praising you.”“It’s not nearly enough,” I said, pausing to take a look at myself in the mirror.I couldn’t lie down all day. We stepped out of the room. Even though it was not for work, I needed a little stroll. “Where’s George? I haven’t seen him in a while,” I said. It’s been over a day now since I last saw him in the hallway. Was he avoiding me? “I don’t know. He has been acting strangely for some days now,” Hazel said.“How strange?” I asked.“I can’t place a finger on it,” she replied, which conf
