“You need to apologize for what you did to Mrs. Montemayor’s grandson!”

Rome sank so low into her chair she might as well have melted into the concrete. Her father’s voice boomed across the entire compound like a thunderclap—loud enough to rattle the neighbors’ windows and probably strong enough to rattle the angels in heaven, too. His bellow wasn’t just noise anymore; it vibrated through her ribcage and wrapped itself around every bone in her body. He had been hollering at her for what felt like the last six hours, and at this point, she was pretty sure she was going partially deaf.

Literally deaf.

And of course—of course—it all started because Dudz had snitched faster than the five o’clock news. The guy could win an Olympic gold medal for tattletaling. There she was, minding her own business in her room, miserably staring at her failed test papers, when she heard her father shout her full name. The kind of shout that made your ancestors flinch in their graves. She had nearly broken

She cleared her throat and promptly looked away, pretending the floor tiles were suddenly the most fascinating thing she'd ever seen. She didn’t respond. She couldn’t. Because what exactly do you say when your childhood nemesis suddenly reappears, picks up your report card from the floor like it’s some treasure map, and looks at you like he’s the owner of this land?Oh right, he really was the owner of this land. He owned the very fucking floor she had been lying on.“What did you say?” Cayson asked again after a while.

Rome wasn’t sure if she should step into the MIC campus gate or turn around and bolt for her freedom. Her heart had been hammering like a construction worker on overtime since she left the tricycle stand. She had been practicing her speech for hours: how to tell her parents she failed to make it into the top ten honor students, how to explain the barely-passing Physics grade, and most importantly— how to survive without getting disowned.Three days ago, she had received the results of her make-up exam for Physics. And despite her prayers, the only miracle she got was a grade of 76. Not even a full five-point improvement—just enough to escape the dreaded red mark on her card. Anything below 75 would’ve turned her grade into a life sentence. Gosh. She could live with 76. Well, barely…But facing her parents? That

However, that wasn’t where Rome’s connection with Cayson Montemayor ended. Two years had passed since that incident. Cayson Montemayor, fresh from his Master’s degree in the U.S., finally came home to the Philippines—ready to settle down and take the reins of their family’s academic empire. He wasn’t just any balikbayan with a suitcase full of pasalubong; he came back fully loaded with plans, spreadsheets, and an unmistakable air of someone who now knew how to pronounce “entrepreneurship” like a native English speaker. He had taken over the family’s transport service business while slowly easing into his soon-to-be role as the School Director of Montemayor Integrated Campus (MIC), the prestigious institution his grandmother Althea Montemayor had been running for decades. Rome had never laid eyes on Cayson Montemayor before. Oh, but she’d heard enough stories to last her several lifetimes, courtesy of her cousin Dudz. What she didn’t expect—what made her stomach drop like a busted elevator—was discovering that this was the rich suitor Precilla once fell head-over-heels for. The same man who, indirectly, had made Rome bury her own feelings for Precilla deep under lock and key… because back then, she knew Preci had feelings for him.The Montemayors weren’t just rich. They were city-owns-half-the-map rich. Cayson’s grandmother—Mrs. Althea Montemayor, the family matriarch—owned the biggest, glitziest college in town, where all of Rome’s relatives seemed to work. As if that weren’t enough, the Montemayors also ran a transport empire that ferried half the town around. And with Cayson being the sole grandchild, the heir title might as well have been stamped on his forehead.According to Dudz, who was now plodding through an accounting degree at Montemayor Int

Ten years ago... Back when she was fourteen years old."Rome!"Rome almost choked when her friend Jiggy suddenly tapped her on the back. She was sitting at the back of their classroom, on the grass, having lunch."What the hell, Jigs!" she snapped, glaring at her friend as she bent down to pick up the hotdog that had fallen onto the grass because of the sudden tap. She looked dismayed—it was the last bite she'd been saving, taking small bites earlier just so she could enjoy it after finishing her rice. If only she had known it would fall, she would have eaten it all earlier. She turned to Jiggy and glared.Jiggy just grinned and plopped down beside her.She eyed her friend, who was now practically lying on the grass. Jiggy was what you'd call a handsome tomboy—yes, she had looks. She was fair-skinned—courtesy of her American father—tall, with long limbs and a sharp nose. Her corn-colored hair was cut short in a barber’s style, making her look even more masculine. They had been classma

Even before she could fully enter their house, she could already hear the voices of her aunts chatting on the terrace that extended from their living room. That terrace faced a wide empty lot that was still part of the adjacent subdivision in their area. A wave of nervousness washed over her. She forgot that around this time, her aunts would usually be at their house having coffee and gossiping with her mom.Her heart pounded loudly in her chest. If she went inside, they would definitely see her because the only thing separating the living room from the terrace was a sliding glass door. Now that she had confirmed her condition, she didn’t know if she could even look any of them in the eye. If they noticed her avoiding eye contact, they’d start to get suspicious and begin probing. She took a deep breath before continuing into the house. She was about to head straight for the stairs when her Aunt Maya saw her.“Rosenda Marie!”She stopped and forced a smile before turning around. “Hey,

Jiggy slammed on the brakes hard the moment he heard what she said, causing their bodies to nearly crash into the dashboard. If she hadn't been wearing a seatbelt, she definitely would have.Even the car behind them suddenly hit the brakes and honked loudly—perhaps also startled by their abrupt stop. And to think they were on the expressway, where cars were practically flying.Good thing they didn’t get into an accident. She felt dizzy from the sudden stop, prompting her to cradle her head and groan slightly.“Jigs, what the hell?”“Tell me it wasn’t true.”She opened her eyes and turned to Jiggy—and there she saw disbelief in his eyes. His naturally red lips were parted, and his eyes were wide as he stared at her.She adjusted her posture and glanced at the line of cars already forming behind them. Some were overtaking, while others were still loudly honking. She turned back to Jiggy, who still hadn't moved.“It’s true. But I’ll tell you how it happened some other time. For now, let’
