Cressida’s POV

The first thing Alaric changed after our agreement was the number of guards around the mine.

By the third morning, warriors in dark leather armour had taken their positions along the mountain road. Two stood near the entrance to the mine, while another pair watched the narrow path leading to the workers' camp.

The settlement was changing too. More timber had been brought in to strengthen the storehouses. Barrels of salted meat and sacks of grain were stacked beneath the roof, awa

Cressida’s POVPush him away, Cressida. That was the first thought that crossed my mind as Alaric held me against him. His arm remained firm around my waist, pulling me close enough that I could feel the warmth of his body. His face hovered dangerously close to mine, his eyes holding my gaze for a moment before slowly dropping to my lips. The way his gaze lingered there sent an unexpected flutter through my stomach. I quickly looked away, silently cursing myself for noticing. I had faced the Council without lowering my head, yet standing in his arms was somehow making me forget how to behave.“Why is your heart beating so fast, Cressida?” Alaric’s voice was teasing. “I can’t hear it.”I cleared my throat and pulled away from his hold. “Perhaps you should stop listening to things that do not concern you.”“Does my concern make you nervous?”“Don’t flatter yourself.”At those words, a quiet laugh escaped him. Alaric was still smiling when a scream tore through the training grounds. Ev

Cressida’s POVCLANG!The sword struck Finn’s with a sharp sound. I barely gave him time to recover before I swung again. He blocked the blow, but the force sent him stumbling backwards across the packed earth.“Cressida,” he warned, raising his sword. “Take it easy.”“I am taking it easy.”Finn glanced at the sword in my hand, then at the shallow cut on his sleeve. “If this is your easy pace, I would rather not see the other one.”I ignored him and attacked. My arms were beginning to ache, but the discomfort was welcome. It gave me something else to focus on besides the Council and the foolish men who had laughed at me. The patrol guards were returning with strange symptoms. Something was happening beyond the territory, and they had treated my warning like a ridiculous tale.I struck Finn’s sword again. He barely managed to block it. “Cressida please. You are going to break my arm if you keep swinging like that.”“Then block properly.”I swung again. Finn stepped aside, caught my bl

Cressida’s POVElder Theron Blackthorn, the oldest Council member seated at the centre of the long table, leaned back in his chair, his laughter echoing through the room.“Black veins beneath the skin?” he repeated. “And you expect us to believe this is some great threat?”A few others joined him.Heat crept up my neck. I tightened my hands at my sides, forcing myself to stay calm. I had expected doubt, but I had not expected them to laugh as if I had walked into the chamber to entertain them.“I am not asking you to believe me without proof,” I said calmly. “I am asking you to investigate what has happened to the patrols and the survivors who returned.”“Patrols go missing,” another council member replied. “Rogues attack our borders every season. This is nothing new.”“Then why are the survivors returning with the same strange symptoms?” I turned sharply towards him. “Why are their veins turning black?”The man waved a hand. “They may have been poisoned, or even suffered injuries. More timber had been brought in to strengthen the storehouses. Barrels of salted meat and sacks of grain were stacked beneath the roof, away from the damp. I had also ordered the workers to keep the mine's entrance clear and the ore carts ready to move. If danger settled, I wanted the people, food, and tools moved before panic took hold. It was easier to make plans while everyone still believed tomorrow would be ordinary. I had learned that lesson long before arriving here.I was halfway through checking the supply records when a rider came through the gate. His horse was covered in sweat, and mud streaked the lower half of his cl

Cressida’s POVDorian’s scream tore through the mining camp. His knees struck the frozen ground, and his unbroken hand clutched the wrist Alaric had crushed. The five warriors behind him stood like men who had forgotten how to breathe. Their swords stayed sheathed“You broke my wrist!” he shouted, his face twisting in pain.“How dare you raise that hand against a woman who had done nothing but defend what is hers?!” Alaric’s voice rose sharply, echoing through the camp.“She is my pack member!”“Not anymore.” My voice came out steady, though my wolf paced beneath my ribs. It wanted to lower its head before Alaric. I refused.Dorian glared at me. “You are still the same disgrace you were when I rejected you.”Before I could respond, Mia hurried to his side. Her pale hands hovered near his arm, but she seemed afraid to touch it. “Dorian, we should leave. The Lycan Lord is here.”At last, Alaric let go. Dorian staggered backwards and caught himself against one of his warriors. His expr

Cressida’s POV"Payment?" I asked. My heart skipped a single beat, but I kept my face blank. I refused to show him any weakness.Alaric smirked. His sharp teeth flashed in the dim light of the gloomy valley. He reached his massive hand right past my head and grabbed the muddy wall. His thick fingers broke off a huge chunk of raw silver straight from the dirt."A sample, partner," Alaric said, tossing the heavy silver ore into the air and catching it. "To make sure your product is pure."He winked at me. His glowing silver eyes faded to a deep, striking blue. Before I could say another word, he turned around and vanished right back into the dark shadows of the forest.Fast forward exactly two weeks. The Northern Ridges weren't dead anymore. I built a massive, heavily guarded mining camp right over the muddy valley. The silver flowed out of the rocky ground every single day. The money piled up in my bank accounts faster than I could count it.I sat in my new field office. I wore a sharp
