CHAPTER 5: ROOM 412

The Whitby Hotel Room 412 smelled like Victoria.

Elena knew it the second the keycard clicked — Victoria's perfume, that expensive jasmine and blood-orange she always wore, mixed with cheap vanilla from the love potion candles Elena now knew were Syrin. And underneath, iron. Old blood.

Adrian had bought the hotel at 2 AM after the gala. Literally bought it. Sophia had shown Elena the deed on her phone while Elena was still shaking from the waltz.

"We need to break the circle before the Blood Moon," Adrian said, standing in the doorway, not touching anything. Fae can't touch iron and witch blood mixed — it burns. "If we don't, she'll use this room as an anchor to pull you back. This is where she first took your necklace. Where she first spelled Julian."

The room was dark, curtains closed, but Elena's starlight made it glow. There, on the hardwood floor under the bed, was a circle. Salt, but not white — pink, stained. Symbols Elena didn't recognize, drawn in something that looked like lipstick but smelled like copper.

In the middle of the circle: a photo of Elena. From her wedding. Her face scratched out.

"She hates you," Adrian whispered, feeling Elena's hurt through the bond like a knife. "Because you have what she wanted. Starlight can't be stolen. It has to be given. Your mother refused her mother 200 years ago. So she decided to take it from you."

Elena knelt. The frost from her fingertips spread over the salt circle. Where frost touched blood-salt, it hissed.

"I remember this room," Elena said suddenly, voice hollow. "Julian brought me here for our anniversary last year. He said he got an upgrade. He made love to me here. And a week later, he brought her here."

Adrian knelt behind her, not touching, but close enough that his cold calmed her shaking.

"Do you want to know what Syrin does?" he asked quietly. "It doesn't create love. It creates obsession and erases memory. Julian doesn't remember half of what he's done. He wakes up, he thinks he loves her, he goes home and feels sick and doesn't know why. That's why he's losing weight. His soul is fighting it."

Elena touched the scratched-out photo. Starlight flared. The photo turned to ash.

"How do I break it?"

"Blood must be answered with light. Your light. But it will cost. Her blood is tied to this circle. When you break it, she'll feel it. And she'll know you're fully awake."

"Good," Elena said, and she placed both palms flat in the circle.

The reaction was instant.

Blood-salt burned her skin. Red threads shot up her arms like veins of fire, trying to climb to her heart. Victoria's voice, distant, shrieking in her head: "MINE! HE IS MINE AND YOU ARE MINE!"

Elena screamed — not from pain, from rage.

Adrian shouted her name, grabbed her shoulders, and the soul-bond exploded. Light and frost collided in the circle, white and blue and gold. Elena felt Adrian's power flood into her — ancient Winter, patient, unbreakable — and her Starlight answered, wild, furious, bright as a newborn star.

"Break!" Elena sobbed.

The circle shattered. Salt turned to glass. Symbols burned away. A shockwave of pure starlight shot out of Room 412, through the entire Whitby Hotel, blowing out every lightbulb on the fourth floor.

In the darkness, Elena collapsed backward into Adrian's arms. She was glowing — literally glowing, like someone had poured moonlight into her veins.

Adrian was staring at her, breathing hard, his own glamour completely gone. Frost crown on his head, eyes silver-white, skin like ice that had learned to be warm.

"You broke a Blood Witch circle with bare hands," he whispered, awe and terror in his voice. "Elena, do you know what that means? You're stronger than your mother already. You're stronger than —"

He didn't finish, because Elena grabbed his face and kissed him.

It wasn't soft. It wasn't planned. It was five years of being told she was too sensitive, too emotional, too much, and then being told she was too little, too human, too ordinary — and finally, someone looking at her like she was too powerful and exactly enough.

Adrian froze for half a second. Then he kissed her back like a man drowning.

The bond, which had been a warm thrum, became a roar. Light poured out of Elena into Adrian, and frost poured out of Adrian into Elena. The hotel room, which had smelled like betrayal, now smelled like winter after a storm — clean, sharp, new.

Elena felt his curse — the ice creeping up his heart, the thing Victoria had planted on their wedding night to slowly turn him to statue — recede an inch. She felt his loneliness of three years in this cold human city break.

Adrian pulled back first, forehead against hers, both of them panting, glowing.

"That," he said hoarsely, "is a dangerous way to heal a curse."

"Did it work?" Elena asked, touching his chest. Under his shirt, his heart was beating faster than its ancient slow.

"A little," he admitted. Through the bond, she felt his desire — not just physical, but soul-deep. He wanted to pull her into the bed in the room where her ex had betrayed her and make it theirs. Make it clean.

Elena felt it too. And for a second, she almost let him.

Then her phone buzzed. Sophia: "Victoria just collapsed at the gala. Bleeding from nose. She knows. GET OUT NOW. Julian is coming up."

Adrian stood, pulling Elena up, his arm around her waist. The room was clean now — no circle, no smell, just shattered glass salt and two people glowing.

Julian burst through the door, wild-eyed, tie undone, Syrin haze finally broken.

"Elena? Elena, what — what happened? Why are you —" He saw Adrian, saw Elena in Adrian's tuxedo jacket, glowing, and his face crumpled. "What did she do to me? I remember — I remember you — I remember the necklace — Elena, I —"

Elena looked at the man she had loved for five years. She felt nothing. No, not nothing — pity. The red thread was gone from his wrist. He was free. And he was too late.

"You chose her, Julian," Elena said quietly, and her voice echoed with starlight. "Every Tuesday at 2:14 PM, you chose her. In our bed. In this room. Now live with it."

She took Adrian's hand. The mark on their wrists flared.

"Let's go home, Prince," she whispered.

Adrian opened the window — 12 stories up — and stepped out. Elena didn't scream. Snow rose up to meet their feet. They walked on air, on frost, on light, down to the Manhattan street where Sophia waited with the car, leaving Julian alone in Room 412, surrounded by broken salt and the ruins of a spell that would never work again.

Behind them, in the distance, Victoria Hale screamed as her anchor burned.

And in Elena's chest, for the first time, her starlight didn't flicker. It burned steady, bright, and hers.
