CHAPTER 4: THE CHARITY GALA TRAP

last update publish date: 2026-09-19 16:42:30

The dress was not a dress. It was a weapon.

Sophia had laid it on the bed at noon — ice-blue, off-shoulder, slit up to the thigh, covered in tiny crystals that caught light and threw it back like stars. No human designer had made it. The tag said "Woven in Winter, 1898. Never worn. Waiting for Starlight."

"It was your mother's," Sophia said quietly while Elena stared. "The last Starlight Queen. She left it here in the human world for you."

Elena touched it. The fabric was cold, then warm. It hummed under her fingers, recognizing her.

"Victoria will be at the gala," Sophia continued. "Julian too. Every rich asshole in New York will be there. The Whitby Foundation. The same hotel where they — you know. Adrian bought a table last year just to spite my lady Victoria. He never went."

"Until tonight," Elena said.

Adrian appeared in the doorway. He had been trying not to watch her try on dresses. Through the bond, Elena felt his effort like a physical thing — respect, warring with awe.

He was in a black tuxedo, but not a normal one. The lapels were embroidered with frost patterns that moved if you looked too long. His hair was brushed back, his silver eyes hidden behind the thinnest veil of glamour — to humans, he'd look like a handsome British investor. To Elena, with her awakening sight, he looked like a prince trying to pretend he wasn't about to go to war.

"You look —" He stopped. The bond flared. Elena felt his breath catch.

"Like revenge?" she offered.

"Like a queen," he said.

Sophia clapped. "Okay, enough mooning. Lesson two: How to make your cheating ex-husband choke on his champagne. Adrian, you know what to do?"

Adrian held out his arm. Elena could see the soul-bond mark glowing faintly through his shirt cuff. She placed her hand on his arm. The moment they touched, her light steadied. His cold eased.

"One rule," Adrian murmured as they walked to the elevator, Sophia trailing as their "assistant" in a sharp suit. "If Victoria touches you, if she tries any spell, you squeeze my hand and think of light. I'll feel it."

"And if Julian touches me?"

Adrian's jaw tightened. Through the bond, Elena felt a flash of possessive ice so strong the elevator walls frosted.

"Then I will break his hand," he said calmly.

Elena should have been scared. Instead, starlight sparked in her palm.

The Whitby Hotel ballroom was exactly as Elena had imagined affairs looked — too much gold, too much champagne, too many people who smiled with teeth.

And there, by the bar, were Julian and Victoria.

Julian in the black shirt Victoria liked. Victoria in Elena's emerald necklace, wearing a red dress that was practically painted on. Laughing, touching his chest, whispering. The perfect couple. The perfect betrayal.

Elena's knees locked. The frost started again, crawling up her ankles. The chandelier above flickered.

Adrian's hand found her waist. Steady. Cold.

"Breathe with me," he whispered in her ear, low enough that only she could hear. "Show them what Starlight looks like when it stops hiding."

Elena breathed with him — with that second heartbeat. The frost melted. The light returned, controlled, pooled in her eyes. She lifted her chin.

They walked in.

The room noticed. First one head, then ten. The strange, beautiful couple — the woman who glowed, the man who looked like winter itself. Whispers.

Julian turned. Saw Elena. His smile died.

Victoria turned a second later. Saw Elena on Adrian's arm. And for the first time, Elena saw her perfect best friend's mask slip. Just a fraction. Just enough to show panic. And hatred.

"Elena?" Julian crossed the room fast, too fast, guilt all over his face. "Baby — where have you been? I've been — we've been worried —"

"We?" Elena said, voice sweet, cold. She let Adrian's hand slide to the small of her back. Possessive. Claiming. "You and Victoria? How... domestic."

Victoria recovered, gliding over, taking Julian's arm. The emerald necklace glittered. Elena's necklace.

"Elena, darling, you disappeared. We thought —" Victoria's eyes flicked to Adrian, and she went pale. "Adrian. You didn't tell me you were in town."

"I live here, Victoria," Adrian said, his British accent glacial. "You made sure of that when you tried to carve my heart out on our wedding night. Or did you forget that part while you were stealing my wife's best friend's husband?"

The bar went silent around them. A few people stared.

Victoria's smile sharpened. "Adrian, don't be dramatic. We're divorced."

"We're not," Adrian said. "Fae don't divorce until blood is repaid."

Victoria's hand tightened on Julian's arm. Elena could see it — a faint red thread of magic, Syrin, connecting Victoria's fingers to Julian's wrist. A love potion leash.

Elena looked at Julian. Really looked. His eyes were glassy, his skin grey. He was being drained.

"Julian," Elena said softly, and reached out before she could think. She touched his hand.

Starlight exploded.

Not big — just a spark, where her light met the red thread. The red thread hissed and burned. Julian gasped, stumbling back like he'd been slapped awake.

"What — what the hell was that?" he muttered, shaking his head, looking at Elena like he was seeing her for the first time in months.

Victoria hissed, yanking her hand back. Where Elena's light had touched her, her skin smoked.

"You little bitch," Victoria whispered in a language that wasn't human. The air around her rippled with blood magic. The chandelier flickered violently.

Adrian moved in front of Elena instantly, a wall of winter. Frost spread from his shoes across the marble floor. The temperature in the entire ballroom dropped ten degrees. People shivered, looking around.

"Touch her," Adrian said to Victoria, voice low, ancient, and not pretending to be human anymore, "and I will show this room what a Blood Witch really looks like when she's gutted."

Victoria's eyes flashed crimson. Elena felt the blood magic building — thick, ugly, hungry.

Elena didn't think. She squeezed Adrian's hand and thought of light — pure, furious, queen-bright light.

The soul-bond on their wrists flared so bright it lit the ballroom like noon. Elena's dress threw starlight across every wall. Adrian's tuxedo shed glamour, revealing for a heartbeat the ice-armor underneath, the crown of frost on his brow.

Victoria screamed — not from pain, from exposure. Her glamour shattered. For half a second, everyone in the room saw her as she really was — half-beautiful, half-rotted, eyes black with stolen power.

Then it was gone. She was just a woman in a red dress again, panting, clutching Julian, who was staring at Elena like she'd become a goddess.

Elena stepped forward, took Victoria's chin in her glowing hand, gentle, terrifying.

"Two can play at this game, Victoria," Elena whispered, using Adrian's words from the garden. "But I don't play human games anymore."

She plucked the emerald necklace from Victoria's neck. The clasp burned Victoria's skin. Victoria shrieked.

Elena clasped it around her own neck. The moment it touched her skin, it shattered — iron spell breaking — and dissolved into light.

The ballroom erupted in applause. They thought it was performance art.

Only four people knew it was war.

Adrian took Elena's hand, kissed her knuckles, and through the bond, Elena felt his pride like a sunrise.

"Shall we dance, my queen?" he whispered.

"Yes," Elena said, eyes never leaving Victoria's terrified face. "Let's show them how it's done."

And to the sound of a string quartet and a hundred confused socialites, the Starlight Heir and the Winter Prince waltzed on a floor of frost that only they could see.
