He pushed in slowly and the stretch burned. I gasped and dug my nails into the sheets because my hands were still above my head where he’d told me to keep them.

“Breathe.” He went inch by inch and I could see the strain on his face from holding back. “Just breathe baby, I’ve got you.”

When he was finally all the way in we both stopped moving and I’d never felt so full in my life.

“Okay?” His voice was strained like speech was difficult.

“Yeah. Move. Please move.”

He pulled out slowly and thrust

My face was on fire. That was the first coherent thought I had after Selene’s hand connected with my cheek—everything else was just white noise and the taste of copper flooding my mouth.I stumbled back and caught myself on the sink and my hip slammed into the marble edge hard enough that I knew I’d have a bruise the size of Texas tomorrow but I didn’t care because my vision was blurring.I wasn’t crying because I was hurt or scared or any of those things you probably expected me to feel right now.I was crying because I was so unbelievably furious that my body didn’t know what else to do with it.I straightened up and touched my lip where it had split open and my fingers came away red.“He broke it off,” I said and my voice didn’t shake which felt like a small victory. “That’s on him, not me.”“Because of YOU.” She shrilled. “That announcement? You manipulated him into choosing some pathetic human over his own kind—”“I didn’t even know he was going to—”She still had the coffee cup

I needed air.I grabbed my phone and walked out because technically I was allowed a lunch break even if I hadn’t taken one in three weeks and right now I needed to be anywhere that wasn’t this building.I finally made it to the lobby there were people everywhere and I pushed through them and out onto the street where at least I could breathe without inhaling his scent every two seconds. There was a café three blocks down that I’d walked past a hundred times but never went into because it had that whole hipster vibe with exposed brick that screamed overpriced, but I went in anyway and ordered soup and a sandwich from a girl with purple hair who looked like she’d rather be literally anywhere else.I found a table by the window and pulled out my phone to check my emails and maybe ask Lena if she wanted to grab lunch, but instead it was a news alert and the headline made my coffee go down the wrong way.I choked so hard the guy at the next table looked over like he was debating whether he

The coffee station was set up on the sidebar and I walked over there trying to keep my hands shaking from anger more than anything else. I hated that they were shaking because it meant he was getting to me and I’d promised myself I wouldn’t let him get to me anymore. I’m going to pour this coffee directly on his head and then I’m going to quit and move to a different city and change my name. I walked back to the table and leaned in to set the cup in front of him, keeping my face carefully blank, and that’s when I felt it. His hand. Under the table where no one could see, his fingers brushed along my inner thigh and I froze mid-motion, the coffee pot still in my hand, because what the actual hell was he doing. His face remained completely neutral, still nodding along to whatever bullshit Dante was saying about fourth quarter earnings, like his hand wasn’t currently sliding higher up my leg, teasing the edge of my skirt. I couldn’t breathe. His fingers found the edge of my skirt

Move. Please move.”He pulled out slowly and thrust back in and I cried out and he did it again, setting a rhythm that was deep and deliberate and absolutely devastating.“Hands.” He grabbed my wrists and pinned them to the mattress beside my head. “Keep them here.”“Why—”“Because I said so.” Another thrust that made me moan. “And because you look perfect like this, spread out beneath me with nowhere to go.”He picked up the pace and I was making sounds I didn’t recognize and didn’t care because everything felt too good to be embarrassed about

I woke up slowly, awareness creeping in piece by piece until I realized I was warm and comfortable and the bed beneath me was way too soft to be the guest room mattress. My eyes opened.I was still wearing the dress from the gala except now there was a duvet pulled over me. My shoes were lined up neatly on the floor beside the bed and I noticed immediately that he hadn’t taken anything else off, hadn’t undressed me while I was unconscious, and something about that made my chest ache.I turned my head and he was there.Sitting in the armchair by the window with a glass of bourbon in his hand, still wearing the tux pants and white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He was staring out at the city but I could that he knew I was awake.“What time is it?” My voice came out rough from sleep.“Almost two. You fell asleep in the car.”I sat up slowly and the dress was completely wrinkled and my hair had come loose from whatever thing Monica had done to it. “I remember.” I pushed

They dragged Jake inside and I could hear the murmur of the crowd as they passed and I knew this was going to be all over the media by tomorrow.Rhys and I stood there on the balcony and the silence stretched out between us.He finally turned to look at me and his eyes were still gold around the edges. “Do you have any idea what it did to me? Watching him on his knees in front of you with a ring? Listening to him talk to you like that?”My breath caught because I’d never heard him sound like this before, raw and unfiltered.“I wanted to rip his throat out,” he continued. “I and tear him apart for even thinking of touching you.”“But you didn’t.”“Because you asked me not to.” He took a step closer and I could feel the heat coming off him. “You think that makes me weak? That I stopped because you asked?”“No.”“I’m not weak, Astrid. I’m restraining myself for you. Every instinct I have is screaming at me to go find him and finish what I started but I’m standing here instead because you
