As the car doors finally started to get slammed, Claudine jumped with each slamming sound she heard. The truth was that she was scared, quite scared. Janey, who rode shotgun with her husband, with Claudine sitting directly behind her, suddenly raised her eyes to catch Claudine's in the rearview mirror.
Their eyes locked for an instant, and it did nothing to lessen Claudine's mounting fear. If anything else, it had increased it because Janey had given her a malicious grin just before she looked away.Ariella had been looking at Claudine's hair, comparing it to hers, and she had been feeling jealous until a plan had formed in her mind. She suddenly piped up. "I do hate Claudine's hair, mom. Look at it; I'm pretty sure it's infested with lice too, don't you think so too?"Janey turned her head backward to get a better view of the back seat. Claudine was glued to her side of the car with her tensed body tightly pressed against the car's right door while Ariella sat behind her father and her posture was quite relaxed. If one decided to compare the girls' hair color, her daughter's hair was blonde and tawny, while Claudine's hair was dark and lustrous. They were anything but alike, either in their body postures or their hair color and texture."Why, my dear. That's an excellent observation. The living conditions of that run-down orphanage are quite questionable" she turned to Claudine, "how many times a month did you wash your hair, dear?"Claudine thought to herself that Mrs. Zaynader could be the kind of woman who would be killing you with her bare hands and still ask you, 'does that hurt, my dear?' She shook off the thought and prepared to answer, but Ariella cut in again."Are you trying to be rude to my mother right now? She's talking to you, dumb-witted girl. Stop moping and respond."Claudine shakily replied. "We—I washed my hair at least three times every day during winter and every day during summertime.""Liar!" thundered Ariella.Matt, Ariella's father, casually turned his bullish head around at the sound of his daughter's raised voice, but instead of asking Ariella to tone it down, he glared at Claudine and said, "If you make my daughter mad one more time, believe me, girl, you won't like what I would do to you."Ariella beamed as she heard her father threaten Claudine. That served the little bitch just right. Who did she think she was giving an answer that undermined her observation? Well, by the time she was done with her, she would know who was in charge.Claudine retreated further into herself. Should she tell them to return her to the orphanage as she didn't want to go live with them any longer? But Matt had been driving for close to two hours now, and Claudine had the feeling that she'd get thrown out of the car and abandoned in the middle of nowhere if she ever opened her mouth to make such a request."No, I'm not lying," she told Ariella weakly while sneaking a glance at the back of Matt's head in fear.Ariella whipped out an arm and struck Claudine hard across her face. "I called you a liar, and you dare not tell me otherwise," she told Claudine in a dangerous tone."Well done, dear," said Janey to her daughter. Her tone was so mild as if her daughter had brought back an award or a tangible gift of appreciation for herself from some organization and not that she had just struck an orphaned teenage girl."Girl sure had it coming. She seems quite the stubborn type", concurred Matt.Claudine could feel the taste of the metallic blood on her tongue. She had not been expecting the slap when it came, so it made her cut the side of her tongue with her teeth when Ariella struck her across the face. She felt her eyes brimming with tears; this wasn't what she had bargained for. She was a realist, alright, and she had known that, to some extent, she might receive some sort of backlash and maltreatment once in a while from her adoptive family. But she had never thought that it was going to be this way, not in a thousand years."Ari darling, be sure to cut her hair when we get home before she gives us all hair lice," continued her mother, who then turned to Claudine and admonished her. "And stop that sniffling, child! I can't stand it.""I'm sorry, ma'am." Claudine's tone was soft."I sure will, mother," smiled Ariella in response as she showed off her crooked teeth, which she bared to Claudine."And I just had another brilliant idea!" Ariella said again as she bounced slightly in the car seat.Claudine's tears suddenly dried up; she was already learning to dread Ariella's voice. Her excitement could only mean one thing to Claudine; terror, fear, panic, any of them would fit."I love your brilliant ideas…you have always been your mother's child", replied Janey lovingly to her daughter."The outhouse. We could leave her there for a week. I mean, if she could have hair lice—did I say if? We know she has hair lice but what of other germs and bacteria crawling on her body that we do not know about?"Claudine could not believe her ears. An outhouse? Wasn't that like an external restroom that is built away from the main house, or was Ariella using it wrongly and not realizing it? Either way, the questions went through; Claudine only knew that she had gotten into big trouble by getting adopted by the Zaynaders."Ah-ha," exclaims Matt, "I do see what you mean." He took his hands off the wheel and drummed his fingers against it, letting go of it for just an instant but giving the car all the chance it needed to swerve off the road.Ariella and her mum screamed in terror while Claudine opened her mouth in horror as she watched the car as if in slow-mo, hurtling downwards to collide with the back of a big tree. Claudine hastily started to say a prayer amidst Janey and Ariella's screams while Matt cursed his mechanic for not getting the damn wheel alignment checked out when he drove in there last week."He's lying," the words echoed in Denzel's mind as he descended the last few stairs. He wondered why Reid would lie about his whereabouts last night, and he was eager to get back to Nira to ask her why she had said so. He never doubted her, though, not even for a split second.Denzel, now standing at the center of the living room, took one look at Nira, who had assumed his position on the overlook, and nodded. She headed to their bedroom, and finally, Denzel turned his attention to Reid again."Hey, Denzel, I'm sorry for being impulsive," Reid said. "You are right; it won't happen again.""Damn right, it won't," Denzel said gruffly and sat on the opposite couch. For a while, silence just hung in the air. Denzel had been dwelling on what Nira had said, and Reid, well, with his head bowed and fingers interlaced, was waiting for Denzel to tell him more of anything he had on his mind."So, the intruder escaped?" Denzel suddenly spoke, causing Reid to lift his head.Reid freed his fingers,
Matt grabbed the wheel so hard his knuckles went white. He turned the wheel as fast as he could to correct the car's motion, but when he saw how fast they were going, he tried to press the brakes even harder to know if he could entirely stop the car's motion.Women, he thought snidely amid the action, all they ever did was scream in a moment of crisis. Why couldn't they just shut up and shout out ideas for him to try out instead, saving them all from getting killed?Matt's eyes widened in horror as the car flew past green shrubs and grass on its way to collide with the tree. He shut his eyes when he suddenly felt that the situation was out of control and they were all going to die.But Janey had seen her husband close his eyes and prepare himself for death; she could almost hear him say, 'All man shall die someday.' The bloody fool.Well, not today, Matt. Not today. She leaned over and took the wheel from her husband's hand, jerking the gear while simultaneously rotating the wheel. At
Nira turned to face Denzel, left hand supporting a towel, right hand running through her wet hair with the towel. Her lips parted to speak, but she drew in a breath and paused; she strode towards him and, looking deep into his eyes for a moment, was finally ready to talk.“I saw it,” she said cryptically, still looking into his eyes without breaking eye contact, “but you knew that already, so I’ll just assume you asked that question out of a place in your mind that doesn’t want to believe that Reid just lied to your face.”"You know I don't doubt you," Denzel said firmly. "I just want to know what you saw."Turning away, she walked towards the closet, leaving Denzel motionless. Dropping the towel wrapped around her body as she went in, she said over her shoulder, “I had the vision early this morning just after I woke up.”At around 5 am that morning, just before Denzel had returned, she had woken up pressed and had headed into the bathroom to pee. When she had finished taking care of
"Knowing me, knowing you, there is nothing we can't do. Knowing me, knowing you…."Ariella and her parents crooned the ABBA classic without harmony of any kind, Ariella's voice being the loudest as she sang at the top of her lungs. The wind carried their voices as they weaved through the forest with Matt's trusty Chevrolet. The music was on full blast, and Ariella could not help herself but remember all the reasons why she loved a good road trip. She sighed contentedly as she saw her mum and dad take up the next tune on the track. It was funny how people quickly adapted to things. Just a few minutes ago, they were nearly killed in a car accident, but they are now singing and feeling so alive. But her last thought made her ponder a new scenario. What would happen if Claudine adapted to her torture and tongue-lashing? What could she do to remedy such a thing? Then another thought placed itself over the one she just had; Claudine wasn't in the car with them; they had left her behind in t
Denzel frowned as he swerved to avoid a cyclist, damn cyclists.“I really should focus on the road more.” He breathed. The problem wasn’t that he had difficulty driving at night. Even under the limited light of the waning full moon, he could see more than enough to be aware of his surroundings, and he wasn’t new to driving. His father had taught him to drive just after he’d clocked fifteen. He’d gotten his license the week after he’d turned eighteen, and now, at twenty-five years old, he’d been driving for about ten years, so he could drive with headlamps at night like he breathed air, so having to drive with headlamps was not the problem either. The problem was that he was too preoccupied with his many tumultuous thoughts to focus on the present continuous task of driving, but how could he not be absent-minded?From the moment Nira had spoken her vision to him till the present, his mind had gone into turmoil, thinking about the numerous “whys.” “Why would Reid want to kill him?” “
Home, the four-lettered word that all the kids back at the orphanage pronounced with a wistful tone thought Claudine. She closed her eyes and couldn't quite put her emotions into words. She could still feel Ariella's eyes on her now and again, but she determinedly looked out of her window for the rest of the trip. She hadn't joined in the minimal conversation after being picked up from the forest either. It took another while before the car started to slow down. Claudine, who had briefly lost track of time, finally dragged her eyes away from her window to see what lay ahead."Here we are! We're home, Bawdy", cried Ariella in staged ecstasy as she mimicked performing a drum roll with her hands.Claudine had cringed when she heard the obscene name that Ariella had chosen to call her. It didn't help that she yelled the name with so much relish and that her parents let her do that without reprimand. The Zaynader's house was an elegant one-story building with an adjoining quarter with white
Reid hated Nira with every fiber of his being and now even more so. As he tore through the woods in his wolf form, his fur became longer than usual, and the wind carried a lousy odor right into his susceptible nose, which he knew was emitting from him. The stench of being a rogue, he could smell it already, and any werewolf who came close to him would be able to smell it, too. The wound Denzel had left him on his face would not be healing anytime soon because an alpha did it. He kept feeling like Denzel was right behind him. Knowing better, he was doomed to have that scar for life. It seemed like the banishment was just a show-off, and the actual punishment, which he believed was death, was yet to be delivered. Since his intentions were still what they were, only intents, Denzel couldn't have been able to kill him. Technically, he had yet to commit any crime, so being kicked out was what the law would permit Denzel to do. Unfortunately, the elders didn't have this privilege, so Denzel
Matt came out of the car, intending to close the garage doors and enter the house, when he received a call. He picked on the third ring." Hello?""Matt, why are you not in the office today?""It's a long story. If you want me to come in, I can. And I'll explain to you when I get there, boss", said Matt in a placating voice."Just hurry up. Your clients are here, and Jon is out. He could have taken them for the house inspection if he was around, so you see where that leaves me?"Matt groaned inwardly. Bosses would always be bosses, and his boss was no different. "Yes, boss.""Good. See you soon then." A final click that signified the call was over.Matt, a real estate agent, sighed and considered whether to enter the house and go upstairs to let Janey know he was leaving for work or if he should join the car and back out of the garage to go straight to work. He was well dressed for it anyway, with proper shoes. He looked down at his body, trying to verify his judgment of his appearance
