"He's lying," the words echoed in Denzel's mind as he descended the last few stairs. He wondered why Reid would lie about his whereabouts last night, and he was eager to get back to Nira to ask her why she had said so. He never doubted her, though, not even for a split second.
Denzel, now standing at the center of the living room, took one look at Nira, who had assumed his position on the overlook, and nodded. She headed to their bedroom, and finally, Denzel turned his attention to Reid again."Hey, Denzel, I'm sorry for being impulsive," Reid said. "You are right; it won't happen again.""Damn right, it won't," Denzel said gruffly and sat on the opposite couch. For a while, silence just hung in the air. Denzel had been dwelling on what Nira had said, and Reid, well, with his head bowed and fingers interlaced, was waiting for Denzel to tell him more of anything he had on his mind."So, the intruder escaped?" Denzel suddenly spoke, causing Reid to lift his head.Reid freed his fingers, adjusted himself on the couch properly, and said, "Yeah, he did. I propose we haunt down those bastard rogues encroaching on our territory, make an example of one of them, and the rest would flee."Reid was doing it again, making suggestions rather than waiting for instruction from his alpha. Denzel shook his head as if to disagree with him, but he was irritated by Reid's overzealous trait."I was going to say that too," Denzel said breathlessly. "Well, not exactly how you said it. How do we haunt them if we don't even know who they are or where they live? Tonight, though, we would lie in wait for the rogues, and if we catch anyone, we would not be making an example of them. I'd like to know more about the Bluefur pack, so inform the others that any rogue caught is to be captured alive for interrogation. Am I clear?"Reid breathed profoundly and replied, "Yes, alpha, I perfectly understand. I'll inform the others.""Good." Denzel stood up. "Is there anything else you wish to discuss with me?""No, I just came to explain why I wasn't accounted for after you called off the haunt last night.""Alright, if that's all, you are dismissed," Denzel said smartly. He walked towards the staircase, and without looking back, he heard Reid's footsteps shuffling to the door. The door unlocked, but Reid paused."Denzel," Reid said, turning to look at him and leaving the door slightly ajar.Denzel huffed. "What is it, Reid?""The mating season is in two weeks, and you are yet to find your mate," Reid said and fled off laughing.Denzel scoffed and shook his head. Reid didn't like Nira either, and at every opportunity, he found ways to remind him that she was not his mate. Denzel was about to climb the stairs, but he turned back to lock the door using the key and bolt.As Denzel made his way up the stairs, he wondered about the rogues calling themselves the Bluefur pack. Rogues were supposed to be rogues because they didn't fit into any pack. How did a bunch of rogues organize themselves into a pack? Also, how had they been able to keep their identity a secret and evade capture for a prolonged period? They seemed to know when to encroach, where to infringe, and when to move on to a different domain. Oh, his wasn't the first territory the Bluefur pack had infested. Over the years, they have gone from place to place before landing on his side. But whatever their goal was, Denzel was pretty sure he would put a stick to the wheels of this rogue's accelerating infestation. He drew a long, dreamy breath, closed his eyes, and exhaled sharply. Even without entering the room, he could tell that Nina was bathing, and her scent intoxicated him to the bone marrow. Perhaps he should join her in the bathroom. Fuck Reid, yeah, fuck him, Nira might not have been his mate, but he had a great affection for her.Denzel's palms curled on the bathroom doorknob, and he twisted it gingerly, knowing it would open easily. Nira was not even startled for a bit. Yeah, she always knew things before they happened, things even he could never have known. Heck, she could even tell who would die next. Nira was a banshee, a harbinger of death.Denzel's lips went dry just from staring at her perfectly formed naked body, which was covered in soapy water, causing her skin to glisten even more."Are you going to stand there and stare at me until you die, or would you rather come and help me scrub my back?" Nira asked in the most melodic voice he had ever heard from her. Well, of course, in Denzel's case, Nira's voice always sounded melodic.Denzel, without replying, hurriedly took off his clothes and joined her. He put aside his curiosity about why she had earlier said Reid was lying and decided to enjoy their shared shower experience. Nira took the bottle of bathing gel and dumped some on his head.Denzel took the soft, fluffy sponge from her and washed her back. A playful smile curled up on his face as he imagined where their actions were taking them. Of course, they wouldn't just bathe themselves and be done with it, no. There would be more, and he was looking forward to what more could be.Denzel leaned in to find her lips, and Nira stretched on her tippy toes to meet his, and they kissed passionately as the water kept pouring over them. In Denzel's mind, his heightened senses made it appear like they were kissing under a waterfall. After a while, when they had just stepped out of the shower, they were still cladded in their towels when Denzel asked, "So, hey, Nira love, why did you say Reid was lying earlier on?”Matt grabbed the wheel so hard his knuckles went white. He turned the wheel as fast as he could to correct the car's motion, but when he saw how fast they were going, he tried to press the brakes even harder to know if he could entirely stop the car's motion.Women, he thought snidely amid the action, all they ever did was scream in a moment of crisis. Why couldn't they just shut up and shout out ideas for him to try out instead, saving them all from getting killed?Matt's eyes widened in horror as the car flew past green shrubs and grass on its way to collide with the tree. He shut his eyes when he suddenly felt that the situation was out of control and they were all going to die.But Janey had seen her husband close his eyes and prepare himself for death; she could almost hear him say, 'All man shall die someday.' The bloody fool.Well, not today, Matt. Not today. She leaned over and took the wheel from her husband's hand, jerking the gear while simultaneously rotating the wheel. At
Nira turned to face Denzel, left hand supporting a towel, right hand running through her wet hair with the towel. Her lips parted to speak, but she drew in a breath and paused; she strode towards him and, looking deep into his eyes for a moment, was finally ready to talk.“I saw it,” she said cryptically, still looking into his eyes without breaking eye contact, “but you knew that already, so I’ll just assume you asked that question out of a place in your mind that doesn’t want to believe that Reid just lied to your face.”"You know I don't doubt you," Denzel said firmly. "I just want to know what you saw."Turning away, she walked towards the closet, leaving Denzel motionless. Dropping the towel wrapped around her body as she went in, she said over her shoulder, “I had the vision early this morning just after I woke up.”At around 5 am that morning, just before Denzel had returned, she had woken up pressed and had headed into the bathroom to pee. When she had finished taking care of
"Knowing me, knowing you, there is nothing we can't do. Knowing me, knowing you…."Ariella and her parents crooned the ABBA classic without harmony of any kind, Ariella's voice being the loudest as she sang at the top of her lungs. The wind carried their voices as they weaved through the forest with Matt's trusty Chevrolet. The music was on full blast, and Ariella could not help herself but remember all the reasons why she loved a good road trip. She sighed contentedly as she saw her mum and dad take up the next tune on the track. It was funny how people quickly adapted to things. Just a few minutes ago, they were nearly killed in a car accident, but they are now singing and feeling so alive. But her last thought made her ponder a new scenario. What would happen if Claudine adapted to her torture and tongue-lashing? What could she do to remedy such a thing? Then another thought placed itself over the one she just had; Claudine wasn't in the car with them; they had left her behind in t
Denzel frowned as he swerved to avoid a cyclist, damn cyclists.“I really should focus on the road more.” He breathed. The problem wasn’t that he had difficulty driving at night. Even under the limited light of the waning full moon, he could see more than enough to be aware of his surroundings, and he wasn’t new to driving. His father had taught him to drive just after he’d clocked fifteen. He’d gotten his license the week after he’d turned eighteen, and now, at twenty-five years old, he’d been driving for about ten years, so he could drive with headlamps at night like he breathed air, so having to drive with headlamps was not the problem either. The problem was that he was too preoccupied with his many tumultuous thoughts to focus on the present continuous task of driving, but how could he not be absent-minded?From the moment Nira had spoken her vision to him till the present, his mind had gone into turmoil, thinking about the numerous “whys.” “Why would Reid want to kill him?” “
Home, the four-lettered word that all the kids back at the orphanage pronounced with a wistful tone thought Claudine. She closed her eyes and couldn't quite put her emotions into words. She could still feel Ariella's eyes on her now and again, but she determinedly looked out of her window for the rest of the trip. She hadn't joined in the minimal conversation after being picked up from the forest either. It took another while before the car started to slow down. Claudine, who had briefly lost track of time, finally dragged her eyes away from her window to see what lay ahead."Here we are! We're home, Bawdy", cried Ariella in staged ecstasy as she mimicked performing a drum roll with her hands.Claudine had cringed when she heard the obscene name that Ariella had chosen to call her. It didn't help that she yelled the name with so much relish and that her parents let her do that without reprimand. The Zaynader's house was an elegant one-story building with an adjoining quarter with white
Reid hated Nira with every fiber of his being and now even more so. As he tore through the woods in his wolf form, his fur became longer than usual, and the wind carried a lousy odor right into his susceptible nose, which he knew was emitting from him. The stench of being a rogue, he could smell it already, and any werewolf who came close to him would be able to smell it, too. The wound Denzel had left him on his face would not be healing anytime soon because an alpha did it. He kept feeling like Denzel was right behind him. Knowing better, he was doomed to have that scar for life. It seemed like the banishment was just a show-off, and the actual punishment, which he believed was death, was yet to be delivered. Since his intentions were still what they were, only intents, Denzel couldn't have been able to kill him. Technically, he had yet to commit any crime, so being kicked out was what the law would permit Denzel to do. Unfortunately, the elders didn't have this privilege, so Denzel
Matt came out of the car, intending to close the garage doors and enter the house, when he received a call. He picked on the third ring." Hello?""Matt, why are you not in the office today?""It's a long story. If you want me to come in, I can. And I'll explain to you when I get there, boss", said Matt in a placating voice."Just hurry up. Your clients are here, and Jon is out. He could have taken them for the house inspection if he was around, so you see where that leaves me?"Matt groaned inwardly. Bosses would always be bosses, and his boss was no different. "Yes, boss.""Good. See you soon then." A final click that signified the call was over.Matt, a real estate agent, sighed and considered whether to enter the house and go upstairs to let Janey know he was leaving for work or if he should join the car and back out of the garage to go straight to work. He was well dressed for it anyway, with proper shoes. He looked down at his body, trying to verify his judgment of his appearance
Denzel got home to find Nira cladded in her nightwear. She hugged him tightly and kissed him all over his face, knowing how difficult the whole day must've been for him.He shuddered under her embrace as she whispered her famous five words, "It's going to be okay."When Denzel had woken up that morning, he never would've guessed that he would learn of this most trusted friend's betrayal, and neither would he have seen that the day would end with their friendship. They pulled out of the hug, and Denzel flopped onto a sofa."I went after him," Denzel blurted out. "Though, I hesitated for some time. I guess some part of me wanted him to escape.""Aww, you've always had a huge heart." Nira sat next to him, taking his hands into hers. "Don't regret your actions tonight. You made the right call at every point. If Denzel is foolish enough to come back, I'm pretty sure you would be able to defeat him. And then you won't feel bad about killing him because you gave him a chance."Denzel's lips
